The MONARCH of CHOW

The queen is dead. Long live the... queen? 200 ChOWS, or rather 199 and it’s time for a new mascot, and this time it doesn’t HAVE to be a Queen. We want a monarch, so it could easily be a king instead.

The flag bearers have raised their poles. The courtiers are quivering in antici.... pation. The herald has blown his trumpet dry and the ministers are stroking their long... beards! The stage is set for a monarch’s grand arrival so let’s see that royal entrance! Design and create the King or Queen of MUSIC. What kind of music? Well, that’s up to you. Put your take on it. Metal, punk, classical, country, industrial, rockabilly, dance, goth, EMO, AOR, hard house, rap... the list goes on! Or somehow incorporate all those genres into one, if you’re plain bonkers enough.

Remember, the monarch is to be the mascot of the next 100 ChOWS! The reigning sovereign, so regal quality is pretty essential to the character; otherwise it’s a fairly free brief. Make sure your chosen music is reflected in the character and costume and we want only one character design, male, female or any points in-between. As for whether human or not, human please as this is based on human experience. But variations thereof: ie: angel, vampire, mermaid etc. are OK as they feature in a lot of musical symbolism. More than one entry is permitted.

Have fun! But please keep the Youtube inspiration clips to a minimum!

I like to compose music that reflects my subject matter, and I will often write some music to paint to when I have an idea that's really worth exploring. Can I compose music for my Monarch of Chow, to be included as inspiration as part of my entry, or is that bad form?

I'd say props to you if you can manage to compose a piece of music and complete a competitively developed image in 2 weeks. An interesting design process to say the least.
If you think it will result in a stronger final image then go for it... if not then I would say, focus on the challenge and spend the mental creative juice and time it would take to write the music on the task at hand.
If you do do it would be cool if you could post the music somewhere so we can listen to it.

Well it's not really a time issue, I just use a sampler and synthesizer- it's not like I need to write sheet music and organize an orchestra. The reason I do it is also partly to get my creative juices flowing visually, so it kinda boosts my drawing production times in a way. Basically the research and drawing time for this piece might be up to 80 hours or something, one moody theme song takes me a few hours to pen, if that.

Oh check this out Yeti, I made a whole game in ten days last year, including a full score, 'Trial of the Schnellersparrow'. So yeah, 14 days for one picture and one song, not too tough for 'ol Pinback, hehehe.
