The white devourer worm is a highly dangerous, albeit uncommon, troglodytic predator. Like many other animals dwelling in deep caves, its white appearance is due to a lack of natural pigmentation. The devourer worm's diet is comprised of practically any unfortunate animal that happens to wander too close to its nest, including the occasional spelunker.

Concept: Subterranean Boring Worm (Analid Fossor Gigantica)

This giant worm lives in the heated tunnels far below the surface of solid core liquid based planets. They live their entire life cycle below the surface of the world, without ever breaking the surface. They bore through the solid rock with their massively powerful, multiple jaws, creating a labyrinth of tunnels. If they were to breach the crust, all of their tunnels would flood with the water from the seas miles above them. In order to prevent this, they have four sensory nodes at the junction of each of their jaws that pick up vibrations from their own tunnelling, similar to one of our terrestrial whales. The strange white colouring is a defect of living ones entire life out of any kind of light source. Since there is no need for colouring, the evolutionary process seems to have simply chosen the default setting.
As safe guards against collapse, the female worms fill sections of tunnel with dense egg sacs, which when subjected to water expand and fill the breach, allowing the worms to repair the damage with minimal loss. The eggs themselves appear to be seen as nothing of particular importance as they display no behaviour or external signs of life. However, once hatched the baby worms are highly prized and revered. The females are incredibly protective of their young, and while normally very sedate and passive, they will fight to the death to protect their brood. Within the hive, there is a great sense of family, they sleep together, work and eat together and also seem to converse (via vibrational messages). I wonder what they tell their babies to make them go to sleep.

your-the irradiated great white worm lives and grows in the "no humans zone" (a zone which was given that name due to the high levels of radiation in there.
these worms live and grow inside the rasiation pools and their skin is white due to the high exposure to radiation and its basickly a "burned skin".
the orange parts on it are actually tumors who grow wild on them and mutating endlessly.
the worms developed immunity to the radiation thus are growing way larger then the regular worm.and thats how they got their names as "the irradiated great white worms"

Concept: Great Southern Bogworm

The great southern bogworm is a toothless scavenger that dwells on the edges on subtropical swamps, scooping up particularly rotten and decomposed flesh with their wide, shovel-like tongues. They are able to spit a rather potent poison, produced in their two neck-glands, at any attackers, but this is purely a defensive mechanism and the worms are overall considered to be gentle and harmless creatures. They are born blind and helpless, completely dependant on their nurturing mother, who in turn will feed her young with the digested remains of her own delicious dinner.

The Great White Sea Grub is a large, amphibious worm that lives in the warm waters off the cost of Central America. Its spends most of its days in the water and typically only leave the ocean when feeding. Adults have been known to devour whales and other large marine life in a single bite! Here we see a mother Great White Sea Grub, beaming as her newest brood of larvae take to the shore for their first hunt. Typically feeding on seagulls and large fish, today the baby's are in for a special treat! Mama is so proud of how her little ones have grown up to be so strong and ferocious... seems like just yesterday they were still little egg pouches clinging to the underside of her clitellum.
Fun Fact: Do to the shape of their unique exposed front facing gills, the Great White Sea Grub is often refereed to as "The Grinning Death".

The giant Cragwerms are among the most intelligent and fearsome desert creatures in existence. The adults have a very tough defensive armor, polished and hardened from moving through sand for many years. Females of this species are very protective of their young who do not posses the armor nor the "feelers" that the adults have, but that does not prevent them from playing rough and tumble with each other. The mother will protect them with her life until they are ready to go out on there own.

The Rytanni Vrymiju are a species of colossal floating worms, found within the upper layers of the gas giant G. Whimlip, a world where life thrives in “oceans” of gas.
Adult Rytanni Vrymiju can grow up to 120 meters in length, and drift through the upper atmosphere hunting for smaller organisms in a process similar to filter feeding. The young, which are normally born in broods between 4 and 5, are not quite as placid as the adults, parasitically feeding off their mother and constantly trying to out compete each other for the richest feeding area behind her head. They continue to feed like this until they are large enough to fend for themselves, usually drinking their mothers dry in the process.

Their existence is not proven, but it is true that hundreds of people disappear each year in the polar regions as they try to hunt seals and bears from open holes at the ice surface. Tradition says that nobody should come near a hole in the ice, as it appears perfectly round, without water and with no signs of human life or steps around.

Description:
The trench maw is one of the most fearsome predators of the deepest parts of the ocean. While being entirely blind it sees using light-sensing fibres at the opening to its vast maw which allow it to sense a myriad of bioluminescent prey. Despite their predatory nature, they lack the ability to chew or the digestive capability to swallow prey whole resulting in a very interesting parenting behavior. An adult trench maw keeps it's brood within it's mouth, the cavernous nature provides a safe environment for them live, when the adult swallows prey it closes it's jaws, trapping the prey with it's young, they young tear, with their fangs, at the helpless prey until it is in chunks of a reasonable size for both young and adult to reasonably swallow. A typical brood is 6-8 worms which are usually divided equally between the male and female. Usually of the 3-4 in an adults mouth, half of the brood will die.

Wow. Everyone's entries are fantastic! This is unfortunately my first post so I don't think I'll be making it to the voting round but you have to get out there and try otherwise you won't improve. I thought more about composition than I did the creature's design and rendering so I'll have to work on those points if I enter a C.O.W. again.

I'm pretty sure that my worm belongs in a post-apocalyptic setting. She burrows out of the ground and hunts during the twilight hours to bring home fresh meat for her lethargic young.

also known as "the white hunters" by the people that live in the desert areas they reside. these worms are able to fly by producing and releasing helium. they move the helium through interconnecting pockets throughout the length of their bodies. moving in a similar fashion as snakes, but instead of using friction of their bodies on the ground like a snake would, they use the air pressure of their surroundings to create propulsion.

a strange fact about them is that they have a kind of reverse family dynamic, where the children hunt down food to bring to their mother. making the children the bread winners so to speak.

Pollux Vermis, colloquial called "Sorogh" is a remarkable species endemical levithating species linving at jupiters atmosphere. The Sorogh eats great Jellyfish-like Creatures called "Iovi-Jelly" it uses its spikes to pierce the thick skin (every lifeform on jupiter needs extreme though skin to survive in this high radiation) of these Iovi-Jellies. Young Sorogh dont have any extremeties, so they have to eb protected well by their parents from other carnivorous species.

Considered some cuts,
Mr. Gadbury, you can paint, but you' didn't show near enough of the creature. Ragnj, awfully borderline with design. Face is very human and I'm not so sure about the breasts. ( I know MOTH had em too but he managed to pull it off without being so obvious)and lack of actual young. An egg doesn't really count in my opinion.
Also missing some descriptions for a few. From now on, no description, no poll.

Close second to wizo5454. Excellent render and colors. Great action.

For me it was a 3 man race between janjager, ricardo robles, and chriskot. But in the end I voted janjager. His sense of movement in that windy blizzardy environment added soooo much to the piece, I really dig the overall mood of it. Great job man.

ninety9 - I really like the intricacy of the head of the worm. The worms feel a bit too flat though, which contrasts oddly with the very well-worked back and foregrounds.
xbert - I love the rendering on the texture of it's skin and the whole flow of the piece. I works decently as a monochrome piece but you don't really get the impression that they're... anywhere, really. Even inside a gas giant. In contrast to the very well executed skin close-up, the diagram at the bottom feel unfinished and sloppy.
(lark - Quite close to getting my vote this round. I like how thought out the anatomy and propulsion was. That said, I feel the diagrams could have been cleaned up a bit. The grey lines should be cleaner, and the direction of the flow on the gasses should be more defined. The illustration itself though? Brilliant.
Ragnj - You always manage to get that intaglio print look to your pieces. I don't see where the young come in though. Those arms could use some reworking, too. In creature design it is incredibly strange for any limb to have no real joints.
ionlydogpaddle - Really interesting view and a cool approach. I like the style a lot, but where I feel the young are excellently done, the adult feels sloppier in comparison.
Mydrim - There is a very grotesque element to this creature and I feel like this is the only worm that I would actually call grotesque. It looks squishy and grubby. Some more definition between the colour of the ground and the worm would benefit the piece. The young feel a bit tacked on...
skyline - I was quite surprised to only see one person take the glow-worm approach. That said, for the glow worm approach I feel that a better sense of dynamic lighting would really benefit the piece. Even if that means just making the webs a little more subtle and subdued. Another thing to think about would be pose. The young are posed excellently, but the adult is a bit too straight (think silhouette).
DefiledVisions - I really like the pose and the sense of movement your piece has. I can totally imagine the worms flowing like some wormy wave. The rendering feels inconsistent, though. Some parts have great texture while others are flat or incomplete-looking. I take it that would be because of time issues?
Dubious - Really original and cool design with a good sense of motion. I can totally see those things rocketing through the atmosphere. Use of saturation levels and atmospheric perspective with the creatures and the clouds could benefit the creation of space in the piece. Speaking of clouds, a bit more attention could have been payed to their rendering.
Ricardo Robles - It was a tough decision but I ended up voting for you. There's a great sense of light, of form, and of writhing movement. I loved the bowl-like stomach on the mother and the description really adds to the piece. Good work.
Fiddzy - A cool concept, with a nice design. A device for scaling would really benefit this piece since when I first saw it I thought the worms must be microscopic.
Natzuur-JK - I like the adult's design, it feels like an amalgamation of the two sand worms from Shadow of the Colossus, almost. It seems more brown than white. The problem I have is that the young clearly received less attention and look a bit too simplified in comparison to the mother.
Yeti Ball - Very dynamic scene. I loved how well the description went with the image. I feel like a bit more attention could have been payed to the non-worm elements of the design, but I really like your style.
andrea w - While I like the overall piece, and the motherly nature of the creature, I feel like the design wasn't really pushed. It's a body and a head without any additional elements to keep the design interesting. The skin is great and has tactile feel to it, but I think it could have been pushed further as a design.
Ianthegeek - Really cool and original design. Like I said in the WIP thread, it feels very Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind inspired (which, I feel, is a great thing). The four pronged tongue is really great and has a wicked sense of movement. I feel like the warrior's pose is rather static, though. In the future try and rely a little less on line to define shapes, if you can.
acb - While the worm is gorgeously rendered with a great design and really cool texutres, the young are easily passed over and feel like an afterthought to the majesty of the adult worm.
St. Ginger - There's some great texture and mood in this piece. The attention to tone really brings your attention to the right places. The heads on all the worms feel a bit too big, though. You should also try to avoid the use of black, in the future, black often looks very flat in colour pieces.
Chriskot - Another really stellar piece. Subtle colours make it feel almost like a flashlight is being shone on the whole scene in a very dark cave. I feel that more attention could have been payed to some of the young. In particular, the top right one looks sloppy in comparison and it's position on the rocks feels gravity defying.
barryjk - Very close to getting my vote. I love the colour and the action of the scene. Most importantly, I really like the design of your worm. I can really see it moving through the water of a reef. I can imagine it as a real creature and that's important. If I have any complaint it's that the background water seems flat and devoid of life. Even some hints at other fish in the neighborhood. It's a reef, and reefs are usually pretty teaming with life. Great work, though.
wizo5454 - Great sense of action. I really like the textures on the big worm and I think some of the rusty tones on it's carapace really add to it. The whole piece feels a bit flat, though. The lighting on the worm just feels a bit too uniform.
Mr. Gadbury - There's a lot of good movement and action in this piece but there are a couple of things to adress. The first is that it seems more dark grey than white. I'd like to see more of the worm, though I suppose it'd be hypocritcal for me to say that considering my own illustration. I think what strikes me is that it's a great illustration, but doesn't work as well on a creature design level. The creature feels simplified in favor of creating the action and mood of the overall piece.
JanJager - Amazing sense of mood, with stellar rendering. Another stellar work, man. I like that you've taken a more benevolent and parental look at the creature rather than focusing on the "carnivorous" aspect of the creature. You were close to getting my vote.
MOTH - You have a very original design here. There's some great texture and lighting going on here. I think the head might seem a bit large, for the body, though, and those teal/seafoam bits look a bit sloppy and tacked on.
Me - Well I'm very glad that I ended up giving up the other design and going to this one because I feel it turned out better. For all I talk about tacked on young ones, I feel I could have spent a good deal more time on them. they feel sloppy next to the adult. I'd also like to make my texture overlays look less obvious than they do here. Maybe work on my rock-rendering skills since those also came out pretty sloppy. Overall I had a blast with this one, though.
