    Crazy skill in this thread.

Sorry if my post didn't fit in... I wasn't sure if everyone was working off the thumbnails or not.

Legato:i recommend www.photobucket.com too,it's free, fast and reliable.just watch that your pics aren't above 250k or they'll be resized to crap by the server.
sammy,i think you can help me most on this issue(but others might aswell suggest something):whenever i draw a bot i don't know how to attach the legs to his body.as you can see on that bot drawn i've no idea how to attach the legs and also how to connect the joints with each other without ruining his stability.i think that's the thing preventing me most from creating working bots.thanx in advance for helping me.

Carnifex: Seriously the best thing you can do to learn mechanics is to actually build some. I grew up constructing gas-powered remote-control cars, helllicopters, etc.
If it's at all afordable go get a kit, with something like a gas-powerd remote car you get to build it from ground up, you get to see the articulations.
Also look at hellicopters, check out the rotaries and hydrollics ... the rotary part of a hellicopter is so small you can almoast put your arms around it, but it's so strong it can lift a multiton chopper ... not only that it can support it and maneuver it in complex ways (that's 20% a real-live mech right there)
Toys are also a great resource, go get a transformer/gundam/stikfa/bionicle anything with loads of articulations, they're just tiny robots that have to have the same ranges of movement but not actualy be motorized.

You have to think of the human body, and then what you'd have to provide extra for hard mechanical movement (toys will show you this) ... for instance in a gundam toy there's an extra 2 articulatons for the elbow, in the new 20th Century Optimus Prime there's 4 articulations in the sholder.

I have some JVC hydrolic/articulation pamphlets from the local plant, I'll scann that shyt in, it helps me a ton to look at all the construction equipment.

for 200 bucks you can get a perfect grade gundam model kit which starts at the exoskeleton and then builds out.

ok sammy heres some stuff i just quickly threw together...

i read somebody's post about joints, so i just drew this out for the heck of it. heres a radical fully functional hip joint...

    heres a leg iso

heres a light gunship i just bsed together, and...

heres a hull detail that i ran out of room on (i like the first one better)

anyway, hope you like it. also, you may notice i use a ton of hydraulics instead of actual "motors" for movement. i prefer hydraulics for 2 reasons. first, the complexity just adds to its coolness, and also, i think they are far more realistic. i don't see a axle driven engine as having enough torque to move a mech well... thats just me

insanely impressive legato, you got a major future in mechanical concepts. And you're getting great at laying out your grids to work from, glad you got a chance to join in

These articulation experements will help you a lot to, I know I have a mental library of every joint I've ever drawn. it's mega helpfull just to doodle some out whenever you can.

Keep support in mind as well, hydrollics have a tendency to bend when pressure that isn't perpendicular to their movement is applied. Like having only muscles and no bones.
And skeletons or exo-skeletons for that matter aid in the overall design.
here's a collection of reference photographs, check out the bulk that's usually around hydrollics.
    mechanical ref

check this book out, it's been mega helpfull for me, it's got some free pages online.

this is a fantastic idea for a thread!!!!! i dont see how anyone who knows about conceptart forums could get an artist block. you have so many revenues of inspirtation/motivation its ridiculous...

anyways i wish i could see more organic thumbnails thrown around here more...i have no problem with the mechs, but its always nice to see curved lines here n there.

ill try and post something shortly.

Very nice articulations, I'd love to see that bastard animated.

Me and legato are in our own little mechanical la-la-land overf here so here's some organic stuff, all inspired by Mike's mammals!

this guy on deviant arts paying me $20 to draw a "steampunk chair" so here it is so far... its kinda worked out cool that this is what im kinda working on in this thread... anyway... yeah, sammy since a lot of people don't like purely technical stuff, how bout we get a technical thread? that focuses on everything technical? just an idea... anyway enjoy.

btw, i will be inking this, so even tho its really confusing now, i hope to clean it up a lot

A mechanical thread would be hellaciously cool Sammy. Maybe you could give us a little info on how you lay out your perspective grids and some tips on mechanical construction and such...

Love this thread! Keep it up!

I agree with Mike your skills are worth more than $20 (important part is that you enjoyed doing it), and as far as mechanics go you should try and find some real freelance - you're young too... boy we're all in trouble.

a Mechanical thread would be awesome... but arrgggg...:crosseyed I'm workin' on my Thesis ( :coffee: ) and wont be uploading any of it's art untill I'm finished.... can we wait 8 weeks?!?! I could go hardcore into it then.

A mechanic thread would be great, mechanical artists are few and far between it would be a great idea to spread ideas and techniques around.

i actually had that in the back of my mind... the hard part was making sure you didn't . anyway, the idea of a walking chair is the same, but imo i've changed it significantly... the one in www is really really boring, and not even remotely feasible imo

yeah, no I feel you on that....I like the way you have made yours look balanced on the paper. Even if you couldn't really build it, it looks like it would work just for that reason. Good stuff. Keep it up man.

Legato did his joby-job, the guy wanted 'Steampunk' and WWW is indeed steampunk. So if the chair reminds you of steampunk that's because it's steampunk

heres my first rendition of a ATV. i tried going for something very radical. most ATVs start looking the same, even in halo 2. so i went for cool and practical. the angled wheels lower the center of gravity meaning this thing is rollover resistant. anyway, i swear the front right wheel's perspective killed my eyes and brain and it still looks like crap... if anybody has their own ideas be my guest and tell me!
