    HarryZed's sketchbook

!please give me advice and criticism! i want to be better.

    hi everyone,

i thought i better stop being an onlooker and start joining in and getting some feedback. i find so much great work here on conceptart.com that i have been a little overwhelmed.

i have been drawing and painting since i was young. i like other worlds and fantasy, reading classics, etc.... have spent some time learning from my grandad who is a painter. did art in high school. am currently studying drawing at RMIT in Melbourne. discovered wacom tablets last year.

in the past i have worked very much from observation, however i want to learn how to make the images that i want to create. i feel like there is a gap: between the imaginary worlds that my mind wonders through, and my ability to recreate that on canvas/screen.

so yeah i will post some paintings from the last year digital and nondigital, please give me crit. much appreciated.

Wow the oil paintings are really neat. I love how you use perspective and the texture really brings it out. And I can see you improved alot with this newer photoshop image compared to your first ones.

ok so ive just been trying to do some sketches from posemaniacs.com . but the pictures they give you to draw from are very low res. can anyone recomend any other sites for life drawing?

also can anyone give me any advice on how i can get better. do you think it is better to draw/paint from observation or to build a chacter from a skeleton?(to learn proportions)

should i just go strait in to trying to draw fantasy scenes with figures buildings etc?

probably best just to get on with it .

That last post is looking cool. On the interiors - stick to hard brushes, much easier on the eye.

    Hey,

I already replied you in my thread about the general things you need to do to get better: practice, practice, and practice But, I noticed that in some of your more recent digital paintings, and some older ones too, you used mostly soft brushes which made your images look.. well, soft and blurry. It seems that you're familiar with hard edged brushes too, though, so I suppose these were just experiments.
I believe you could do more studies of things like anatomy to make your paintings more believable. Also, I think some of your paintings lack definition and depth, and both of these problems can be solved by painting from life, I think. You can improve depth by doing value studies and definition by using hard edged brushes and observing forms and details more carefully.

I really do like the last phone study, and the color experiment earlier.

All of the above is just my opinions, I'm no expert in painting so feel free to disagree with me. I hope at least some of it helps, though.

    Keep it up.
It doesn't cost You much to leave a comment in my sketchbook, and it can help me a lot.

Great stuff so far. I love that sci-fi painting. A lot. Definitely agree on the harder brushes and also stick to bigger brushes as well. Some of your rendering looks a little sketchy. Other than that, I love the variety you have going on here.

hey nice stuff, i like that you're bringing in anatomy studies. i'd be wary of practicing stuff like that digitally though, you might want to go back to good old pencil and paper, just turn out as much traditional studies as you can

you know its funny you should say that, i was kind of thinking the same thing, wacom tablets just don't seem suited to controlled fine line work, although i think tonal anatomy studies are still very possible. i don't know, i might continue anyway, i dont want to give up to quickly.. anyone think that fine line work can be controlled on a wacom tablet?

i do like traditional mediums. but now the idea that i could go from start to finish completely digitally, is a very exciting one to me.

thanks Magic Man, yeah just realizing how much i have to learn is a big motivating factor.

hear are some character and landscape paintings, landscape especially has a long way to go, i keep changing things. color has got out of hand. probably should find more reference material, i guess.
