Had a bit of a theme of drawing/painting from life this week... I wanna do at least one day a week where I just focus on "from life" cause I got a lot from these. :')

There's not much this post, since I had a godawful weekend that left me feeling like crap, and I'm working so many hours at work at the moment since it's so busy (I work in a cinema, and the new James Bond film has just been released. Go figure.)

Hope everyone has a good Halloween!

Good head sketches and oil still lives, glad to hear my sketches inspired you. Good lighting and colors especially on the one with two penguins!

@Smuli, Flaskpost, Kerah: Thank you guys so much!

Long time no post... My scanner decided to break on me so I don't have as much to show as I'd like. So, here, have some sketchbook pages. (36 pages to go... I will finish this book this year!!)

And a digi-portrait of Ed Sheeran to relax. Tried playing with the colours a bit more experimentally, ended up making his skin look like plastic. Oops.

May as well face the fact that I'm not very good at updating this sketchbook thread regularly... On the off chance you might want to see more regular stuff, I've made an Art blog which is alot easier to keep updated. Pop over and say hi, it's still a baby yet.

Forced myself to stick to half an hour on each of these, trying to work faster/more efficient... Surprised myself by needing less than that some of the time. Need to up the ante next time.

Good values on the new stuff! I like the brushstrokes on the half an hour studies, but watch out for making the knees and calves too thick.

The newest oil portrait is awesome, great facial features and subtleties on the skin and I like how you've made the background softer/blurrier. My only critique is that you could've left some softer edges for the hair too to make it look more natural, less like a solid chunk. Apart from that, stunning work!

The Smile for the Blade painting could really use a more dramatic lighting. Most of your references in general seem to have had a magazine-like lighting coming from the viewer that doesn't make much of a statement. For photo reference with dynamic lighting, characterdesigns.com is a great place to start. Just a notion though I guess it's a matter of preference.

@Smuli: Ahh, thankyou!! Yeah, I've been looking through my work and it seems the knee/calf thing is a recurring thing... Fair bit of leg anatomy revision needed there, I think. And yep, hair is a constant nightmare for me, but the soft edges would have helped!
Also, which references do you mean? Because for the oil portraits (like the ones in posts 277/268), I've been choosing them particularly because I loved the lighting and colour in them.. It'd be a bit disappointing to hear I'm picking out the wrong ones :/ but for others I use self-shot ones or deviantart stock usually, so I can understand it being a bit washed out but I usually sacrifice that for more variety with posing... If that makes sense?
Thanks again, I always enjoy your comments, always helpful!

New finished painting... Had a lot of fun with the details in this one. Feels good to get back to fully finished illustrations.

I like the lighting in the paintings you mentioned but looking upwards on this page, the two colored paintings on #276, almost every sketch in #275 and the card illustrations have light coming directly or almost directly from the viewer. Your drawings don't lack depth but it's a lighting that doesn't show the forms in the clearest possible way. I personally prefer playing with shadows so maybe I'm biased but thought I'd point out it seems like a habit.

The newest painting looks really good! It has a 3/4 lighting enough to show some cast shadows, the high-key palette works well and the steam-punky environment details look great! As for critique, I think the big pipe she's sitting on could have either some metallic shininess or a clearer look of patina, now it kind of lacks a sense of material, and the ankles seem a bit thick again comparing to the little feet. I see you're working on leg anatomy though. Composition seems to lean a bit on the left because there's so much more detail there. Just minor nitpicks though, great work!

Awesome sketchbook. Great to see tight traditional studies in pencil mixed with more expresive digital work. You've got a great feel for tone and surface rendering. Good going, keep it up!
