    Talking Chip Whitehouse's Sketchbook! *** (Updated: 5-8-11) *** Pg 2

Feedback/ Critiques DEFINITELY welcomed and appreciated!!!

Rip me to shreds! MAKE ME CRY!!!

    --ORIGINAL Post (April 15th 2010)--

    Hey guys,

So I've decided to start a "sketchbook" on here.

I've been having trouble with this one painting I'm working on (you can see the piece and read my struggle here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=186372 ) and someone recommended I stop and do some still life studies from observation. I haven't done a still life or painting from observation since school (over a year ago) so I decided to give it a go.

I decided just to paint something that was sitting on my desk right next to my monitor, an empty Diet Coke can. This is 4 hours worth of painting, from start to finish.

    --EDIT-- (10-11-10) --

I don't know exactly what I'm trying achieve anymore... but I'm REALLY just trying to find my style? Or what I really want from painting? I feel like I am ALL over the place so please bare with me. (Less Than Three)

    --

Anyways, thanks for checking out my stuff!

Feedback/ Critiques DEFINITELY welcomed and appreciated!!!

I set this still life up... worked on it for 2 hours. And I'm just bored/ done with it. I think it's cause it reminds me too much of school/ cliche still lives. IDK. On to the next one!

PS: That is an apple on plate, then I wrapped it in cling wrap. Not sure if you could tell or not. Lawls.

This is my most recent "sketch"? I'm going to call it a sketch because I spent about 3-4 hours on it, from start to finish. I'm really just trying to work out a style I like. I also think I'm going to do another version of this, but more zoomed out so you can see his entire body and more of whats going on. We'll see.

I used http://jesper-stock.deviantart.com/ as a photo reference. Here is the specific link: http://jesper-stock.deviantart.com/a...Back-158954425

If you can't see the reference photo sorry. I just want to put it up there just to make sure he gets some credit.

    What do you think?

You can download the full size on my deviantART page: http://cuptow555.deviantart.com/art/...oint-161443677

i really like the textured traditional feeling that you use in your work and the fact that you are painting in layered colors is also great and gives your work a distinct quality. Its something that i aim for in my personal work.

I've been having some motivation issues these past few weeks. I always have that urge to paint and create, but most of the time I just can't bring myself to start. So today I was roaming around the Downloadable Content on Massive Black and finally decided to purchase Whit Brachna's "Snow Mountain" video. I finally got the nerve to purchase it because it was only $15... then realized I there were too parts, but I was already sucked in. THEN I liked the video so much I bought his "Masking Demonstration" video.

ANYWAYS here is a quick speed painting I did using the brushes that came with "Snow Mountain Part 1". This is the view from my window in Napa. Was just convenient...

SO glad I bought the videos, I've learned a lot (haven't finished watching them) already and it just gives me a LOT of motivation!

NOW I JUST NEED $60 dollars so I can buy THE CRYPTCRAWLER ONE GOD I want that one so bad...

I spent like a hour or so on this

I'm still trying to figure out how I want to paint? I'm so confused and frustrated. Trying to figure out where I should use a certain brush was pissing me off so I decided to stop and just go back to use the regular round brush.

I figured copying a Sargent painting would be a good place to start. I would love for my digital paintings to look like his oil paintings LOL! But yeah I would randomly use Whit Brachna's smudge brush then would go back to regular Photoshop round brush. I'm so frustrated I decided to just stop and get some opinions. What do you guys think of the way I'm painting this?

Should I REALLY just stop being a baby learn how to make custom Photoshop Brushes and become a brush expert? LOL *sigh*

    I feel like giving up.

Anyways spent a few hours on this. I'm including the whole thing and then a detail of the woman below it.

    Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I was kind of depressed the other day and didn't feel like doing much at all... So I figured I would paint a portrait of Britney Spears. I know it's corny, but Britney Spears always put me in the best mood, her music that is, so I figured painting her could have the same affect. I was right! I got lost in this painting and all my problems went away.

Anyways I'M REALLY liking how I am painting her face. I'm really starting to get comfortable with using different brushes and Photoshop. I'm definitely going to work on this a lot more. But would like to get some feedback on the "paint application" too smudgy? Let me have it! RIP ME TO SHREDS!

    Thanks!

I have had some SERIOUS painter's block for the past few months. I haven't been able to paint AT ALL. I've been pretty depressed dealing with a lot of... eh whatever. But yeah I finally finished that stupid Britney painting. It's whatever. I think her nose looks a little too big also but I'm over it. Moving on. Lawl.

observational work is looking good, though see if you can blend your strokes more, instead of painting in dots/high res. Because when leaving all strokes visible, you lose the edge work which is really important (since all your edges are sharp that way)

    keep up

I understand your frustration but I think you are off to a great start. You really do have some strong painting skills. I kind of have the same thing where I don't really like painting still lives but I know it's important so I force myself to do it anyway. Do you have that problem to?

Interesting style, I like the looseness to your work. Makes it feel more painterly than most.

Still messing around with different brushes and textures... Also trying to get better at abstract work. I'm so used to realism that it feels extremely awkward when I do abstract stuff. But it's starting to feel a little better? I don't know what do you guys think?

I probably should have worked more on her face? I don't know... was just over it. Moving on!

The Sargeant study is great, I have the same trouble with brushes, here is a really great source of p.s. brushes I found last summer http://www.pandemoniumart.net/brushes/. I think the closest painter to sargeant would have to be Craig mullins, btw he has updated goodbrush.com with tons of watercolors and oils, charcoals. it's brilliant. anyways Cheers!

Hey man. I wanted to say that this looks realy good, and it does, but I think the thing you do where you pimp out your colour studies is kinda cheating yourself a bit. Easier to just keep to the studies and just do more of them, 'couse that is the interesting part of the images. Don't get me wrong though, you are really of to a great start here, so keep at it

teapo - UGH! I absolutely love your sketchbook xD Thanks for checking out mine too! I really appreciate it!

    Alexson - SWEET! Thanks!!!

snatti - I completely agree with everything you said.

oma - YEAH YOU DO! I love digital painting because it's so easy and it's like instant gratification! Without the clean up! BUT I really miss oil painting. Like A LOT. I just wish I could offer them right now. T_T

Mischeviouslittleelf - Hey thanks for the feedback. I sincerely appreciate it! I'm just confused at exactly which painting(s)/ part(s) your talking about? Pimped out as in using all the ridiculous brushes and bright colors? LOL! Which part are you talking about?? Could you be more specific because I really want to improve! Thanks again!
