I voted for:
ArtbyManon - LOVE the style. So dreamy. I liked seeing your progression and how much research you put into it.
Stoph - Such a cool scarecrow - great colours and awesome design.
ithoual - I always love your colour schemes and Dorothy's expression is PRICELESS
JessiBean - Always outstanding. Such vibrant colours! Great effort too in almost finishing all four.
Rambozo - It doesn't obviously read as Wizard of Oz to me but the rendering and style is brilliant. Very dynamic and as pure art I think it's fab!
Thx for the usefull feedback and the support!
And sorry for the wrong name, i'll pay attention next time :] !

Scetchbook: View the exhibitionist's stuff.
my very favorites are stoph and jessibean...
Very nice round to you all participant-dudes, but,
Go Jessibean! you have to be the winner this time! your entry exceeded what was needed! (IMO), you went way farther! hope you win =)
I hope i can participate on chow soon!
Jessibean- This is simply fantastic. The colors are beautiful, the rendering is just wonderful! The chalk was a brilliant idea, it provides that childish aspect to the piece without it being overbearing. Dorothy is my favorite as I've heard several others say also but I also think the scarecrow is a close second. Truly epic! *bows*
Phurtura- Your design is very original. Kind of reminds me of some contemporary pop surrealism style mixed with those steve madden ads. Love the expressions and you managed to do your exaggerations in just the right way, great piece!
Weaselpa- This is so unique! The detail is incredible and the whole thing feels so magical! This really belongs in a childrens storybook somewhere. I like the more proud take on the scarecrow as well, really inspiring!
Stoph- So simplistic yet so telling. I really look at your scarecrow and feel an inner pain. I love the use of sticks and bags and the general stray from the "ideal" proportions. The bird is a great touch also
Great work everyone! can't wait to see everyone next round!![]()
thanks for the votes, guys! been off my game for a fair while, so its good to get back into things and dust off those cobwebs with a well-received CHoW.
hats off to JessiBean, my dear you have outdone yourself, even with Dorothy alone!
also voted for fersteger for such a neat execution and montage to boot (that tin man kicks so much ass!)
Rambozo cause you reek of Foster (good thing!) and I love Toto
annnnd megadubitably - your style is so old worldly I cant get enough! true to original adaptations without sticking directly to the template and bringing a whole new vibe to the characters
definitely gonna try wade in on #197, just you watch me!
nice round. In the end i voted for Rambozo, bendragon, fersteger and Jessibean, the ones that gave me the idea there was a whole fantastic world behind their paintings.
notes:
jessibean - your backgrounds never fall behind characters' quality in details and colours ( the couch in chow193 is still in my mind ). The idea of a painted wall in this one and the palette you used for each character made a huge difference but i noticed it after several minutes of watching your works. I like also the way you decided to put Toto in the final painting.
fersteger - in yours i can see a lot of potential because it's easy to imagine the movie made out of those character designs with the same color palette, or, even better, the illustrations for the book version. Of course Tin woodman is worth many words and it's strange how the other characters do not fall on a lower level. I can't understand why but, even if at first the Tin woodman stands out, it's like they all have something unique i'll discover only by reading the book ( or your mind ).
Rambozo - Dorothy totally scares me but - low barycenter, the perspective, the dog ( honestly the dog is 66% of my vote ), the hair : everything is in motion. That's the other 33% because there is so much movement i can't stay quite on my chair but i have to spin a bit! Then, the eye of the dog, everytime i watch your painting my eyes always end up there
bendragon - oh, i love this. The style is unique. Lion and scarecrow are somehow perfect in their own ways. Usually characters without both iris and pupil seem to me to be less alive ( maybe because of the lack of expressions they can make ) so Dorothy earns a honorable mention for breaking my prejudices. She seems rather happy ( and curious? ) about the strange world she's in. The Crows' wings are my favorite detail because, to me, seem to add a dimension that sends my imagination in the background and in the blue sky.
megadubitably psychologically speaking I have associated the wip thread to your sketches. The final painting takes me back many decades and it was more or less for a distraction that i didn't vote for yours also. The "more or less" is because i've been confused by the seriousness of Dorothy in your painting, maybe i should read the book and get a better understanding of the character ( i imagined her as a happy-go-lucky character ).
Centra so many details! Too bad they don't show up much in the final piece. I'm very curious how you imagined the other characters. I have a sketches-fetish so your wips with megadubitably's and fersteger's just made my day.
Ithoual This is another painting where my own idea of Dorothy stands in the way of a prejudice-free critique. Not the expression per se but the adult eyes. I have to say that yours is the only one where i smile while watching at it because it's easy to sympathize almost immediately with the humanized characters ( expecially Tin & Leon... Scarecrow is evil, isn't he? )
stoph It makes me sad because that's one character design that really can let me imagine a whole life-story behind a face. Maybe you even thought of all the adventures or experiences your scarecrow had to live... all the specific details seem so intentional that i had to imagine a story, i had to! Is he coming back from a war against the crows' kingdom where some mercenary woodpecker becked to death his leg? Is he coming back from the Wicked Witch quest ? and if so why is he alone? was he abandoned by his friends? Or is he just old and those adventures are now lost in a distant past? ( maybe i'm missing something and i should read the book )
sorry for not commenting everyone and sorry for my english.

Sentinel: where is yours? ;_;
sweet stuff all around!
Thank you for the votes everyone!! SO pleased to have finished my first CHOW!! I really enjoyed it.
Jessibean - Loved your colours and especially how you incorporated the story into the backgrounds too with the crown on the wall and the rainbow etc. Your style suited this so much because most of us probably remember the 'technicolour' movie, lots of luminescent brights. Your lion has a lovely Disney-esque quality.
Stoph - I loved the balance of your piece and so much character in so few lines, very clever.
megadubitably - lovely classic illustration - beautiful linework.
Fersteger - great linework and really unique take on the tinman.

It’s great seeing so many Dorothys with silver slippers! I do think ruby made sense for the 1939 movie given the B&W/Color divide but I think it’s a shame that color became iconic. And while I may be a stickler I wasn’t going to hold red shoes against anyone
Agnostes’ movie post is my favorite out of the bunch but to be honest there isn’t a single one in this round I don’t like. The different settings and themes in particular stand out.
My votes went out to Fersteger, JessiBean, Stoph and Ithoual for kickass execution and expressive characters. Overall though, it was great work by everybody and hopefully see you all in the next round! I've been out of the game for almost a year now, and I only saw this weeks topic yesterday. But, no matter! I'm gonna get stuck in again as of now!
I voted:
ArtbyManon On the basis that I love the art style - it gets a vote just for the beautiful lion before it even gets to anything else.
Fersteger One of the pieces where (for me) you get the best sense of character rather than just aesthetics.
Centra Great fun design with a nice bold style to it.
Megadutibably I like the 'Victorian illustration' feel to it, makes the painting have a wonderful antique kind of feel (particularly the Lion)
Jessibean For pretty much the same reasons that every single other person has voted for you! The Lion is my favourite.
Loads of superb work though
and i thought i had a good picture.

Always think about:
lighting! design! perspective! proportion!
And (self)motivation is still everything.
Stoph : Foster ??? Thank you very much, I appreciate that
R3u5 : A scary Dorothy is sorta what I was goin' for so that's good hehe I toned her down early in the process though 'cause I figured there was no point in making her look completely off her rocker.
Kittymeow84 : Cheers! You're right that it doesn't scream out "Wizard of Oz" at first look but I rather like that myself. A little off beat maybe, but that jives well with me![]()
R3u5 : I like the crusty feeling you gave your illustration, gritty, urban. I also like the fact that you reinterpreted the characters, that's a plus. And toto popping his head out at the bottom is a nice touch hehe.
One thing : shouldn't the Lion be the one drinking ? "Courage in a can" after all
Fersteger : sick man, my favourite. The design and layout are great, you even managed to keep that ridiculous funnel-hat the tin-man had in the movie without making it look weird. Love the line work. Only qualm is that I feel you didn't polish off the final render as much as you could have (reflections on the tin man for instance). An easy vote to decide on.
megadubitably : nice old school look, feels like it should be in a fairy-tale book. Very fitting. Good version of a younger Dorothy, love the lion and his curls hehe Has Toto become a teady-bear ?
Stinger88 : I really enjoyed the fact that you transformed TOTO into an acronym, see things differently. I'm not to sure I get how a 6 foot tall nuclear-ray-gun matches with a cheerleader uniform thoughA few shadows cast from Dorothy onto the gun would really have helped give it volume/distance I think.

aw shucks, doesnt look like anyone likes any of our interpretations.. guess its a good thing mine didnt make the thumbnails on that site..
Wow yeah they really didn't - though to be fair, they did seem to cherrypick a good deal of the more 'controversial' and radically deviating from the original designs to show on the site, which is what they seem to have more of an issue with. They probably wouldn't be complaining so much if they selected a bunch of the more 'faithful'. Though they do seem to like the L4D one!
But why?
Shame that they all seemed to instantly go for the fact they didn't like the 'content' .... not one of them actually mentioned the artistic quality or the fact that talented artist put their hearts into creating images so detailed in just a few days.... This week I've truly been stunned at how many amazing finished images there were and to produce such high quality work in such a short period astounds me.
I voted for Jessibean as her work blows me away everytime.... I also failed to note that is was multiple votes or there would have been quite a few others.
EDIT: Just seen the Kotaku link... Woah! That Road poster has gone down a storm.
Id like to start involving myself with the Character of the week...Final submissions get submitted here before the 19th? With the border/template? As a file attachment?
Are submissions closed for this...poll is open till the 19th...?

Submissions for this round are closed now but you can enter the new round. The thread is posted and the theme is Gestapo. You have until next monday to submit your final design, then a new round starts ^_^
All of the details are posted at the beginning of each thread. Good Luck
The Kotaku post is now repeated on Steam itself now too (on the L4D news page) - congratulations Agnostes, you've certainly made a splash with this one!
