Indeed. Believe me, there is nothing like looking at one's own sketch from a week ago and seeing all the bloopers, to strangle any awe I might have in the cradle.

Happy to be of service. And thanks. The detail in "Old Potter" was mostly improvisation; the concept included the potter, the tree and the little faun, and all the whimsical weirdness had been added to the 1:1 scale cleanup sketch, without a prior plan.

Actualy I'm quite fascinated by the implied leaves. they are quite astonishing. I love such simple things. It fascinates my how view lines can make the eye (or brain) see something rather complex.

Other than that I really like your shades. From what I see you could try different body-shapes. At the moment they all look quite similar.

Yeah, I know how that can work. Some classical Chinese painting styles depend 100% on such implication. And take decades to master... If only I could imply a complete human figure the same way!

Other than that I really like your shades. From what I see you could try different body-shapes. At the moment they all look quite similar.

Heh, that's a silly accident due to posting things done at different times out of sequence. By pure chance three similarly thin figures ended up together. (Even though the proportions of the archers and the sprite are different.)

Let's find a sketch with a different figure type for the next post, then...

Not sure who is making trouble downhill from this pair, but they surely are going to be in trouble shortly.

Black pencil, cartridge paper. A more finished drawing this time. I tend to use Prismacolor black pencil for things like this, but this time I ran out of replacements and had to use a Staedtler, and it worked better than Prismacolor, being harder than the latter and thus more controllable and capable of finer value gradation and thinner line. I used the softer, creamier, more textured Prismacolor only for a few darkest spots. I might switch my pencil preference due to this.

The concept itself is just a random idea. I can see where it owes to Spanish fashion of 18th century, Errant Story comic and Tim Johnsson, but there are other influences here too.

Interesting! I don't think I've ever seen you draw a horse before, at least not of the two-legged variety. Makes me wonder what you'd make of something like an elk man/woman, they are similarly majestic.

Yes, not a very frequent idea for me... but here it is. It was a whim, really; I wanted to do a very heavy-set, bulky yet not overly muscular figure, so this picture suggested itself.

Funny you'd mention elk women... I have a pretty recent sketch that could be interpreted as such, though not in the same way as this horse woman. Elk in general has a very masculine connotation for me, though; think Cernunnos.

You're right, I wasn't expecting that result at all! I suppose when I think elk woman, the bulk and scale remain, but with an antler-less head. Like the otter people you did earlier, it'd be best complimented as a contrast to the male counterpart. It came to mind because you've always seemed keen on woodland cultures.

A demo done yesterday in one of threads here on conceptart.org. Going exactly with the original mannikin's proportions might not have been the best idea... I prefer my figures more realistic and less anime leggy. Oh well.

Perhaps. If I dig into my archive I think I might find something more like a deer, but the closest thing I'd done recently was some sketches of female fauns. Most weren't good enough to post.

Two Procyonian explorers, from different Houses (clans/associations, for lack of a better word.) The one on the picture left is a recognizable Lrinkenzi, the one on the picture right is harder to pinpoint without color - probably one of the northerners associated with the sprawling Shorre house.

I never drew binoculars fit for these critters before. Turns out their large inter-pupil distance makes the binoculars rather bulky.

Graphite sketch on printer paper. I tried to make the scanned image backgroung light gray, instead of my usual white, and make the "black" a very dark gray, to see if this reproduces the graphite effect better, with a less garish look. I might switch to this method of presentation for graphite from now on.

Really nice sketch here. I could tell right away that these two were from different territories, their physical differences subtle but recognizable. I can't tell if the scanning method is different than your other scans without close inspection, but I can say that pure black for representing graphite doesn't look natural, so you're probably on the right track with your levels.
