    Did some more work.
Wondering - should I keep it simple and have a very pared back background - just a slight suggestion of a yellow brick road?
Or continue with the more elaborate background?

Time constraints to consider also - I doubt I will be able to go into much detail on background stuff so any tips would be handy - am I heading in the right direction?

If I DO keep the background, I know I will have to bring up the detail and contrast on the character to make sure she stands out more than she does right now.

not sure if i'll be able to finish this week, and not happy with the designs yet, especially tin man.
but my thoughts on the characters:
dorothy, possibly a stripper or something? (latex outfit?) she is the operator of the group, often has to act as a mother to the others (probably develops real feelings along the way). besides getting home via the wizard, she wants to take the others to him so they can stand on their own two feet.
cowardly lion, don't have much in mind. can't get kizer's picture out of my head. hm...possibly a scout for his tribe, cause he hides alot? lost his group of course.
tin man,no conscience,simple-minded brute. would often hurt others if not for dorothy holding him back.
scarecrow, for lack of brains behaves mostly like a child. strong instinct though, has a knack for sensing danger.

    btw jessi,LOVE that lion.

Some sweet stuff floating `round here!

Had the *exact* same idea in the beginning as Reymus, but since he called dibs, I had to re-think it. My version of Dorothy is...disturbed. VERY disturbed. She`s a bad, bad little girl, who got to Oz after being medicated in the asylum where she was sent to. Still, that did not prevent her from having some, erm..."fun" while visiting. Planning to give her Tin-mans severed arm with axe she`ll be wearing as a glove, Lions paw (as a lucky charm), but the scarecrow is confusing me...maybe his head stitched on her dollies body?

Wicked Witch of the West...you`re so dead when she gets to you...

I am loving the tin man concepts blowing through here! This my progress so far. I ended up watching The Wiz to get more inspiration (and to just listen to the tunes!), so I decided to pay tribute! I may add in Toto.

Woah, love the concepts here... this is turning out to be a lot of fun. I can't wait to see all the finished pieces~ (xerxyz, that is one scary-looking Scarecrow) D:

Started a sketch today in class while we were doing group presentations, then took a few hours at home to start adding the color. Since I'm an awesome student like that. :B I'm thinking about adding a sword, crown, and *maybe* some really small ruins in the background.

I'm trying to play off the "king of the jungle" phrase here... maybe the Cowardly Lion has to defend his domain from someone, and all he wants to do all day is put pansies in his hair. (lol so dumb, I know)

Centra I love your lion! Such a cool expression - he looks so sad Awesome work!

Phurtura Brazier - looking good! It doesn't really scream Dorothy to me yet apart from the witches feet. I think she may need something on her that also identifies with the story - like the shoes or something. Though adding Toto would help a lot!

PxelSlayer - really great idea you've got! Very sinister. I can't wait to see how you develop it!

Carnifex - AWESOME sketch!! The story behind them sounds strong too

SimonSavage - I like the sketch - The lion in her bag is awesome. And the tatts too

(just a few crits for now, gotta go to work soon)

    Wicked stuff guys!

    Alrighty then, c&c first!

AvisNoctura: I like your sketches and final composition, however, the lion seems a bit smallish (lions are big, an adult male lion is about 120 cm high at the shoulder).
Reymus: cool idea, lion looks badass
Jessibean: Awesome. I love your Dorothy!
Alexjholt: Nice Tin Woodsman design, chunky!
Undeadartist: I like the pose on your lion, but to me his toes look too long. It is difficult for me to tell if you were aiming for satyr-style legs (in which case the toes would be the only part touching the ground) or just ordinary human-style legs though, so it might be just me. Nice job on the Tinman.
Xerxyz: Oooh, your scarecrow is spooky and grim-reaperesque. Curious to see what you’ll do with it. The big Chinese-looking lion is awesome, great expression and style 
fersteger: Nice composition, and a brilliant Tinman! However, while very good looking in terms of style, your lion looks too small (am I hammering too much on this, people?), I wanna see this finished!!
AzureLure: nothing wrong with traditional! You may want to check up on Dorothy’s anatomy, though. Her pose seems stiff and unnatural, flipping the whole thing should make it evident.
DIMAGYAN: I love the face of your Tinman, that “hair” is a nice touch.
fdisk: A gay cowardly lion? Bloody brilliant, why don’t I ever think of such stuff? I like how your Tinman is nice and beefy.
mary-cherry-me: I’m curious to see where you’ll take this. The lion design especially looks promising.
aaro_n: yeez, there’s so may cool Tinmans! I love the face on yours. And the legs. And the pose.
kittymeow84: It looks like your Dorothy is floating above the ground, when I look at the shadow it seems as if that was what you had in mind, but, she also looks rather stiff. When I imagine someone flying/hovering whatever you want to call it, generally a more graceful, natural pose comes to mind.
Carnifex: Cool idea for the composition!
    Centra: great. ‘nuff said

Sorry if I missed anyone! Here’s my lineup, still pretty rough, but these are not the final poses anyway so what the heck. Suggestions and such are always welcome!

I had a brief moment of clarity - can't believe nobody else has done this (unless of course it's a totally bad idea).

I'm doing Wizard of Oz, Left 4 Dead style. What could possibly go wrong?

Initial sketch. I'm really not happy with the scarecrow at all, or the overall character placement, and my Lion doesn't look so cowardly but screw that...the intention is to make a L4D campaign-style poster with emerald city burning in the background, as the characters stand on THE ROAD (we're not in kansas anymore). Etc...

    But why?

Ok so never posted here but thought where better to start than here.

I'm working on a Steampunk Oz. Just starting Dorothy first, not sure who else I'm going to do yet.. the Tin Man seems a bit obvious

Hi guys, here is my attempt at my first CHOW, a scarecrow taking a bite out of a trespassing crow. This is the initial (very) rough sketch. Im not sure if i have enough time to develop it before the deadline, but ill try.

Reymus: I really like the pose of the lion. You've got a nice stroke as well, looking forward to seeing more
Jessie: Lovely as always. I dig the lions pose and dorothys clothes look gorgeous! Thanks for the crit btw, good point with the composition
Alexjholt: I like the tin man most, and the face of the scarecrow looks really cute. Maybe extend the canvas and make the scarecrow a little biggfer for more size variation? I don't know
undeadartist: feel free to design your tinman the way you like, it's just coincidence we had somehow the same idea. In the end yours looks totally different anyways And I like him a lot so far!
xerxyz: Wow, this looks weird. In a good way. Looking forward to seeing more
sentinel: SUCH a gorgeous face! How are you doing this?
fersteger: Great design so far! I like the overall look. The lion reminds me of old childrens books illustrations
AzureLure: I like the setting you chose and I like the overall look so far. Watch her feet they don't seem to fiot into the perspective.
Dimagyan: I just love all of your designs. honestly. I was looking at all of the latest chows and your stuff always left me with my jaw dropped
zaorr: I really like the mood in that last thumb. Hope to see this rindered
fdisk: thanks a bunch I like the second tinman most as the lines look so clean. mayber exaggerate the perspective a little more.
nightblue: That tinman's just too cute! I love his expression!
Stinger88: I like the different look of your tinman. It's a little too early to say more about that
mary-cherry-me: I like the design of your lion, but maybe you could give your dorothy a little different proportions? She looks a little too "long" right now for my taste
aaro_n: If I was that lion I'd hide too! Scary designs, but in a good way! Looking forward to seeing more!
kittymeow84: I like the dog a lot! You could make your picture a lot more interesting by adding some interesting lighting to it
SimonSavage: Very cool design! I love the lion!
oren90: The poses look nice so far. Now give us some design
    crossmirage: it's a start
carnifex: great composition! I also like the design of the different characters.
    pxselslayer: nice pose so far!
Phurtura Brazier: I like her look. Are you going to add blue light? Maybe you could add her dog. Right now it doesn't quite look like "dorothy" to me, there are some elements missing.
Centra: I just LOVE that expression. Great work so far!
Suneater: It's a small lion liking your designs a lot so far, although dorothys upper body looks a little too long compared to her legs.
agnostes: I like that gangster kind of look on your design. However your characters look all very similar in shape. Try to varya little more. And watch your perspective, the tinman doesn't quite fit in.
clockwork_mouse: really nice and detailed design so far! Looking forward to more!

Phew... I definetly need to go to bed now!

Here's what I got so far... gnah... I don't like rendering XD

Ok. So I'm having difficult thinking up something good for the Lion character. So I'll forget about the other characters for now and focus on Dorothy and Toto.

I'm trying for a Warren Louw style pin up. I dont want to totally rip his style to much so i'll try and add a different twist in some way.

Still a long way to go though.

Wow great work everyone! keep it up! here is my small update did some color tests and got a scarecrow, having trouble with dorthy the most believe it or not

    first my thanks

Avis- Thanks avis! really hope he turns out good and unfortunatly i liked my design to much i really couldnt bring myself to re design him

Suneater- hey thanks man for the crits yea my lions feet seem a bit odd i originally was gana go for satyr feet but it just looked wrong so its human legs im going for maybe ill bring more definition to a foot

    now crits!

Clockworkmouse- Beutiful design love the steam punk look

Stinger88- np for the ideas either that was almost my first choice but i went against it, thats awsome i know soooo many people here in kansas that would love that as a graphic for something, but a suggestion for the lion maybe do a lioness/lionchick type thing and keep with the whole cheer leaders/pinups?

Alexjholt- Sweet design really like the glowing scarecrow not much for me to say on this one

AvisNocturna- again amazing! really like the look its starting to get the only thing that keeps bugging me is the lions snout looks almost dog/horse like in a way but it still all looks AMAZING!!

maxrlx- keep up with it play around some more, possibly work on some anatomy his legs seem to small and a bit disproportionate

agnostes- thats just bad ass in all acounts you should totally do it like the movie poster way they have on the game

Suneater- sweet line up tin man looks sweet, is his axe like a retractable spring loaded thing? may want to specify that a tad more but im sure it will look better once you get the poses down!

Centra- Love the lion the whole idea of the king of the jungle is pretty awsome i dont know maybe he could have traded the crown for his posies? like a ring of them hanging off to the side?

Phurtura Brazier- awsome look and colors! yea you should have toto looking at the witch either growling or just kinda like wtf?

PxelSlayer- Awsome idea but here is a suggestion instead of the lions paw make it like a lions headress? and for the scarecrow how about toto with his head in his mouth?

Carnifex- great stuff and poses cant wait to see this in color love the movment in the whole thing!

crossmirage- hope you get a image that sticks keep up with the poses!

oren90- like the poses cant wait to see were it goes!

SimonSavage- lol really great is the scarecrow behind her with the flying monkeys?

kittymeow84- hmmm well you could try the whole she just left the munchkin town and there is a small sign of that and she is walking around in the fields, but to just wondering is she floating? maybe try grounding her may help a bit

aaro_n- love it! most of all the scarecrows look on his face is priceless!, hope to see the lion!

mary-cherry-me- hmm off to a good start just the lion kinda confuses me seems like hes got to much going on at once, if your going for a knightish type look try for more armor and maybe its broken? and dorthy may want to bring out more of a feminine shape and look to her more of the hourglass keep it up hope to see the others!

Nightblue- like this look kinda reminds me of neverending story lol but hope to see more and the scarecrow to!

fdisk- love the tin man and dont worry about posting so many its all in good fun and its always cool to see how others work!

zaorr- awsome sketches! really like the cartoon look to the lion sketches you got there

DIMAGYAN- really like not sure maybe make the tin man look more rusted and old?

AzureLure- gives me a alice in wonderland feel to it, not sure whats going on in the background with the tin man? but hope to see it finished!

fersteger- really dig this one love that robo tin man only one question is toto gana be there?

xerxyz- really like the whole lion kid and kung fu style, maybe you could do some kind of aura thing behind the kid that looks like the lion dragon thing? love the scarecrow!

Sentinel.- beutiful and im sure she will love it!

avis,i think the pic works better with that tree for tin man to lean onto. also provides better focus on the characters, that open sky right now is too distracting. really dig dorothy's design.
clockworkmouse, like the desing, but her hands are far too big. they're like the size of her lower arm. female hands tend to be about the size from chin to eyebrows.

BEHOLD maybe... the tinman! Very much a wip but playing around with the idea. Don't know what i'm gonna do with Dorothy of all people. I'm thinkin' geisha but that fits in to the kung fu world a little too well?

ah,but now that you've made the hands smaller, you need to lengthen the arms abit for compensation toto could have more droopy shoulders and generally be abit pudgier. bit too human right now.

so,i'm alittle undecided. i did a shading pass and put a colour layer on top,but i'm unsure with what mode to go. the lightsource is lightning striking. multiply is showing the colours well, but darken gives me ones that are so wonderfully wrong, like the acidic battery taste on your tongue in such a situation.
    somewhere inbetween the two,probably.

    Always think about:
    lighting! design! perspective! proportion!
    And (self)motivation is still everything.

Edited Toto a bit, will make him more pudgier tomorrow.

Carnifex: The darken definitely looks more intense.. like an epic moment in the middle of a dangerous lighting storm... which I'm guessing is what you were going for. The odd colours make if feel uneasy.

Aaron: I really like where that Tinman is going! Can't wait for the full render.
Suneater: That scarecrow is great! I love the pole design as opposed to giving him legs.
Clockwork_Mouse: Looking great! Love the direction and the Steampunk feel! Toto looks a little too much like a Teddy Bear and not so much like a dog, it could be the vertical pose.
Undeadartist: Good tinman; the chimney is a great touch!

This is going to be an epic round!

Clockwork Mouse - Great Dorothy! Her ankles seem a little big though.

Carnifex - Go with the darken, it's got a more ominous look to it, plus it won't look washed by light values when you go to render.

Phurta - Beautiful so far, if I had enough reference I was going to do Diana Ross.

Not as far as everybody else, but ended up with some final sketches. (Cept for Tin Man, he kind of blows)

Hey everyone!!! Thanks for the feedback on the earlier stuff. I went back and started blocking in more color, added in Toto, put the touches on Dorothy that make her...well her and I am now thinking about taking the background elements out and going with a whimsical texture of some sort. This is to give the hint that she is in a magical place and at the start of her journey (which is why the shoes aren't on just yet). Well off to bed!!!

Some progress... I'm almost happy with the scarecrow... #3 and #4 are my faves, I think?
