CHOW 196 :: The Wizard of Oz - HOST : Jessibean

ROUND #196 :: The Wizard of Oz

    DESCRIPTION

"The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, 1900

Dorothy is a girl who lives in a farmhouse in Kansas with her Uncle Henry, Aunt Em, and little dog Toto. One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy inside, is caught up in a cyclone and deposited in a field in the Land of the Munchkins in the Land of Oz. The falling house kills the ruler of the Munchkins, the Wicked Witch of the East and Dorothy sets off on an epic journey along the yellow brick road to find the Great Wizard Oz who can send her back home. Along the way, she meets a Cowardly Lion, a Tin Woodsman, and a Scarecrow who become her traveling companions.

Pick any one, two, three or all four of the main characters - Dorothy, the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow or the Cowardly Lion - to (re)design. Give it your own spin if you want - you can set it in the 1930s midwest like the movie, the original Victorian context in which it was written, or any other time or genre, just make sure the essence of the characters and the story is still captured in your design.

Wow truly epic topic! I've been a long time lurker and always wanted to participate. I think this'll be the one! Tried for the Mystic Gunslinger but didn't finish in time. Should we save our WIP's for final posting?

Yet again I couldn't polish something in time, and am, again, excited for the next round. I've got some sweet ideas for this, but really need to organize my thoughts and not rush it.

Nice one... Though it may be nearly impossible for me to get the original John R. Neill illustrations out of my brain, I think I read all the Oz books at least a hundred times as a kid...

Before i get to involved in my design process, i was wondering if we have to stick strictly to the story as told by the books/movie or can we alter it to fit our chosen genre or theme? I'm thinking vintage/fantasy/horror mix

edit ^^^ MagicPrincess, i'd truly love to see a vintage horror version of this. I think the guidelines just mean that the character's essence has to be in tune with the original, I think you should run with your idea.

I found this while searching for inspiration, its a few different styles of illistrated Wizard of Oz. Kind of wish I didn't find it cause one of them is slightly similar to my ideas, and when I find something similar I can't continue with my idea...feel like i'm cheating.

    http://abduzeedo.com/wonderful-illustrations-wizard-oz

Anyway, i've an unhealthy obsession with Cyberpunk, and was thinking creating a cyberpunk version, would this be acceptable per the guidelines?

Here's how I'll justify it; I figure Dorothy can be some kind of synthetic meat farmer, probably in a lab-coat get up, since we're already technically able to grow meat in a lab, its not that far fetched.

The Tin man will be some sort of android built for battle, but desires a heart to feel the warmth of love and kindness.

The lion might be synthetically created from ancient DNA (jurassic park style), and he's an adolescent and maybe his genetic make up is screwy, thus the cowardice.

I'm having trouble with the scarecrow though...

    any help/opinions?

I'm thinking that in Kansas there's a military base not too far away from the farm where Dorothy resides. During some "research" the military screws up and tears a whole in the space/time continuum opening up a portal over Dorothy's house and sending her into another dimension. Since there can only be one dorothy per dimension the dorothy native to that world and the farm house dorothy must unite into one entity. The problem is the native Dorothy is the Wicked Witch of the West. Dorothy now is in control of the hordes of munchkins and filled with evil. Toto becomes a hell hound of sorts.

The Lion i'm thinking is part of a native lion clan who is very barbaric. He is successor to the throne now that his father has died. The clan knows he is weak and cowardly and so in order to claim the throne he must prove he is worthy of it. He is sent on a mission to the ruins of Oz for his right of passage. Knowing there is an evil and powerful entity residing there, the lion faces either death from exile or somehow hope to gather the courage he requires to fulfill his task and return to his clan a king.

The Scarecrow and the Tin Man I haven't fully fleshed out yet and i don't want to take up any more space. Will be posting some gesture sketches/thumbnails to get some feedback. If this idea is not suitable I will change it, please let me know.

I'm psyched about this one. Hell, i might even finish! Go me and my ADHD! WOOOOO!

Really liking what i'm reading so far from the rest of you so far. Some really clever ideas coming out and that means i'm gonna have to push even further for something really amazing.

Luckily, my brain is buzzing right now at 1:00 am thanks to the last thing i'd seen being Crank 2. Really not the sort of movie you should watch if you're trying to calm down. Be warned, my designs may be influenced by the action-cocaine stylings of Jason Statham.

By the by, is the Wicked Witch of the West of limits or.... what? I mean it can't hurt to ask right?
    Right?

Regretfully, I failed to finish last week, which means this week I'll have to make even more effort than I normally would.

Now to think up something suitably whymsical and awesome

    Best of luck, everyone!

I was thinking about it last night - my Dorothy is gonna be a whacked out heroin junkie off in her own little world. Hence the floating and I'm gonna put a belt around her arm and some lovely looking track marks.

hmm. I pictured a "little kid" type Dorothy with slippers too big, but I think I'm going to sit this one out to do some canonical studies. If I decide to find the time I'll throw up some thumbs.
