    Cliff's crap (for now......)

Hello all. I am an artist who just recently started taking himself seriously well not himself but rather his art. I hope to never take myself all that seriously. Most of my work recently has focused on high-end caricature but I am seeking to expand my horizons. To that end I seek knowledge wherever I can find it. That is what led me here.

It is my intention to post regularly here and take part in the site as much as I am able.

To start this sketchbook off here are a couple of caricature speedpaintings:

nice caricatures always liked caricature never been any good at doing them
uhm a little bit of advice, it´s a bit hard to tell with this few paintings but you seem to drop them rather fast. would be nice to see some a bit more finished
    keep it up

Thanks for looking DK. I do have some more finished work.

These faster ones are because I am trying to discipline myself to get the basics down without worrying about detail at all. I have a bad habit of getting lost in detail. This way I can't if I want to finish before the buzzer. I still want to make sure I can capture the likeness which I feel is paramount.

I am also trying to push my exaggeration a bit and the longer I work on a piece it tends to move closer to portraiture.

Here is a Stern I am in the middle of as well as some sketches of my hand I just did. For finished pieces, I invite you to check out my website for I don't have many uploaded to my profile here at present.

Here are a few more hand sketches. I am putting together a drawing club in my town so I should have a bunch of life drawing sketches to show soon.

nice updates. You are mixing it up well
something i have learned from my still life studies is to stay away from the soft brush as much as possible especially with hard surface object´s, other than that it´s looking good.
    Keep it up

    Thanks for looking DK.

Didn't get much drawing done today. Tomorrow I am planning on a couple of still-lifes as well as some skull studies. For now here is a SBP sketch:

I have a busy day planned. A couple of still-lifes, a speed paint or two, working on laying out a children's book that I am illustrating (and co-authored), and a skull study (from photo ref found via Bing image search).

The skull study is well on it's way here is the wip:

I did a still life of fruit. I set them up on my desk right next to my cintiq propped up on a baby wipe container with a spit-up cloth for a backdrop. It was kind of hard to portray the grounding of the plate because the circumference of the plate was bigger than what it is resting on so it sort of looks like it is floating there.
This was originally angled more do to my pov but I rotated it in SBP.

I usually use Photoshop for my digital painting but I like the interface of SBP better so I have been using that more. Unfortunately I am not sure how to set up my cintiq so that the shortcuts I have set up for photoshop will have the equivalent set up for SBP. For example I keep my pen switch set for Brush and Eyedropper but not sure all the keyboard shortcuts to set that up properly. I am probably just being lazy.

Great Stuff Cliffroth i like the still . if i could give some crit it would be that you should use the soft brush as little as possible especially when it´s a bright image.
In general the brighter the object the harder the brush.... well that´s what i found anyway .
    Keep em coming

Thanks for looking. I will try to remember what you are saying about brushes. I am still experimenting with brushes. I am getting the hang of using SBP for painting. Definitely different than the approach i take in PS.

Here is a speedpainting I just finished:

Today as a warm up I am working on a master study of Boris Vallejo's Sister Act. I have the initial sketching done in SBP and am about to block in values and fix the sketch as I go.

    that Steve carell is awesome...
and stern is also very nice, I think one of the main things that you should look out for when mixing colors is the warmer and cooler tones, and how you go along placing them, am just getting into really understanding colors myself too, and i am having a real hard time understanding how to place them properly... anyway man your caricatures are way way awesome,,,
    cheers

Thank you Mehran. I use color mostly by instinct so it is probably flawed. To the best of my knowledge if the light is warm the shadows will be cool and vice versa.

Here is an update on the master study of Vallejo, I made adjustments tot he placement of the figures as well as the canvas size. Other Other than that a lot of blocking in. More to come soon:

Did a lot more resizing and repainting as I refine the master study. Probably should have worked out the proportions and all that in the sketch phase and did a more completed sketch prior to painting but c'est la vie.
