What, you'd use that money for the ignorant masses? There's more to life then mere survival.

    Screw them!
They procreate-bringing stupid people into the world, they destroy each other, & they don't even know what the collider could do for the betterment of mankind.

Much like a Denny's in the Sahara.

    But I digress.

I remember reading an article about this. Heard about it on NPR.

    Cool.
"Everything must serve the idea. The means used to convey the idea should be the simplest and clear. Just what is required. No extra images. To me this is a universal principle of art. Saying as much as possible with a minimum of means."

Yay I am nerdily excited about this even though I'm no way skilled in the physics department - though I did read and love The Elegant Universe.

Does it make you a hack if you love physics but can't do the maths??

But yay so much awesome - Such a big step forward for science

    Collider walks into a bar...

Bartender: "Whoa! That's one large Hadron y'got there."

Collider: "Yeah, and it's about time. Haven't been able to get it up for over a year."

    Bartender: "So what happened."

Collider: "Well, I was thinkin' about how nice it would be to shoot some particles at work when I noticed Higgs boson go bouncing by, and...BINGO!"

    Sorry...somebody had to do it...

$10 Billion for something that will probably bring us closer to the Theory of Everything as well as other neat stuff. Totally worth it.

If they could find some of the missing particles that would prove Super Symmetry, that would really give me a hadron.

If they could find the graviton and start proving M-Theory, that would give me a large hadron.

I thought the powers that be would be rational anough to find it very hard justifying the money spent on such an impractical dorkout..
It's bad anough that higher echelons of society invent themselves jobs and appropriate sallaries just to circulate wealth.

What's next, a buncha philosophy proffesors getting research grants to get one step closer to their phylosopher's stone...

Humanity is bored. There needs to be a natural disaster of epic proportions soon to stir things up. I was kinda hoping this was it...

$10b is nothing, in the grand scheme of things, a subatomic particle of piss in the ocean. Roughly 1% of the cost of the ever-so-beneficial war in Iraq, or 30% of the amount of money the UK government wastes annually because of incompetence and poor organisation. And that's about all I have to say on the matter because this subject, possibly more than any other at the present time, is a magnet for kooks, lazy thinkers, the willfully ignorant and, in general, thick people with opinions.

So you come, make some philosophical fart about $10b being nothing on a big scale and how way more money gets wasted on stupid shit in other places and then have nothing more to say.. And then have about 10 people thanking you for your lazy thinking...

Althought it is informative i guess, I had no idea UK government is so incompetent, now i see where canadian government gets it's roots.
