Hey Goremageddon,

This image was created using the ProCreate app (v 1.6) on an iPad 3.

I used a reference photo of the Lioness that I found on wetcanvas.com as my guide. I placed the photo on a layer and reduced it to about ¼ of the screen. This allowed me to keep the reference visible and move it around (using layer-transform) as needed. I setup the canvas with a black background and used a separate layer to sketch out the outline.

All of the painting was done with the "Round Painting" brush. I kept the size pretty small (between 2 and 4) and the opacity most always at 100%. I sampled colors from the reference photo and blocked them in. I spent most of the time using the Smudge tool to create the fur detail. ProCreate offers tons of brushes, each with lots and lots of properties that you can adjust. You can even create your own brushes. Since this was my first painting using ProCreate I elected to use this one brush but I'm really looking into exploring all the brush capabilities in the future.

After the foreground elements were done I worked on the background on a separate layer. The last step was to sign the painting.

When the project was done I exported the final image as a .png and used "Perfect Resize" to scale up the image in preparation for printing on canvas. I used www.canvasondemand.com and was very happy with the results.

Here's a photo of the canvas (26"x19") and a close up to show the details. In reality, the colors are super close to the original digital painting even though they look off in the photo. I took the photo using my iPhone in an environment lit with fluorescent lights.

Quite an impressive piece. The fur is particularly nicely rendered - you could almost get your fingers into it (though I probably wouldn't try).

A couple of crits -
* The ellipse describing the end of the lower bamboo support does not read well to me - the lighter lower portion of it projects out uncomfortably.
* In general, the modelling of the bamboo sticks makes them appear slightly flattened. You may be missing some reflected light on their undersides, or it could be that some subtly higher lights along their centres would bring them more into the round - just accents mind you, nothing drastic.
* If it were my painting, I probably would have modeled the bamboo more broadly to keep the focus on the lioness. In fact, I would have kept the modelling broader in general, but then I like broad paint handling - a la Velasquez, Raeburn, Sargent et al - so I would say that. You've done a good job of giving them texture, which my approach might not have done.
