Topic: Coffin

Background: A slightly simpler topic than last week, though a little more heavy. There won't be many restrictions this time either...

A few things you might want to think about is the setting and person your coffin is going to be used for though. An outlaw in the Wild West would not get the same burial privileges as the Pope or member of a Royal family obviously.

Brief:
1. Design and draw a coffin!
2. That's it... now draw!

1st thought I had was something from my childhood. Can remember burying my hamsters in margarine tubs in the back garden. But drawing a hamster funeral would be more of a illustation than industrial design im guessing.

Should be an interesting round, I've got some ideas flowing already. Could we design like a mausoleum or some type of burial chamber to include with the coffin?

Anyway here's a start.

Final resting place of a Lava Lord. The corpse still produces lava, so the coffin needs to be built to suit. Therefore it has a couple of features built in to cover for this. Including some vents at the top and openings in the sides for excess lava overflow, this in turn gets directed out of the tomb via a series of channels in the floor.

The design is a simple one for now, I plan to make it a little more grand and intricate, benefiting a Lord of the Lava.

Cool subject! I'm a beginner with undeveloped imagination and I usually focus on humanoids only - but this subject is irresistible

A question... If I draw the coffin with surrounded with candles and whatnot and use lighting to make a nice atmosphere (not sure I can do that though), that's okay here? Or I should show the object clearly, as a "product"?
{My English is too weak for such explanations But I guess it's understandable}

ShiNIN, thanks. I don't think it matters if you add atmosphere to your object, as long as you don't get carried away, remember that the object still has to be the focus.

Nutter, I liked the first one and was wondering where you would go with it. Man, you went in the right direction that's for sure I dig the rivets and I like what you did with the vents. Nice work all around.

I originally thought of doing a coffin for an undead king, or some type of demon lord. I always liked the style of the Chaos Space Marines from WH40K, with their combination of hard metal and twisted flesh. I decided on a coffin for a "Dragon Prince" of some sort. Still a long way to go, but this one is already too much fun!

So the first thing that came to mind was a "flying coffin" of course, that is to say a B-26. And though the WWII vibe was rapidly discarded I did end up stickin' with the flyin' bit. So this is a huge monumental floating coffin/pyre with half of the funeral procession visible pulling the deceased to his final resting place.

Started work on this Tuesday in the wee hours takin' advantage of some 12 hour jetlag. Piled on a lot of work then but flaked out a little for the rest of the week. Bahh. Anyway, still a few things bothering me with 'er but don't recon I'll have time to work on this till the poll goes up so this should be it right here.

shiNIN : I figure you can add as much atmosphere as you like, just make sure it doesn't crowd the coffin. It's like drawin' a character right ? You don't need the background, but it usually tells more of a story and helps flesh the character out, put him/her into context.

Nutter : I like it. Well done on the lighting : boom, makes it all pop out just right.

Hey folks,
I have a question : every time I post an image on the net it turns out way darker and muddier than on my screen when I'm workin' in photoshop. It's rather bothersome but I don't know what's the hassle (and so how to fix it), any advice ? Should I be working with a particular proof setup or something ?

it will depend if you are using rgb or cmyk because if you are using cmyk to paint most websites are set up for the rgb tones so your image will appear different on them, its all to do with these ones when i do an illustration i always change between rgb and cmyk every so often to c if there's much difference for print or websites
