kikindaface: I'll definitely do face and hand studies in the future, right now I want to concentrate on gesture first and foremost - I'm currently studying Vilppu at the moment and learning a lot in that regard, so I'll stick to that for now. And yes, Vilppu's approach is KILLER - really helps bring an image to life!

Seraph Fawkes: Thank you. I'll definitely do some pencil shading in the future. Shading is actually a lot of fun for me, so I'm very eager to do those actually. Glad you like my digis as well, I do paint every day, I'm just not allowed to show anything due to NDA, unfortunately

Here's a speedpaint I did of the female torso from imagination, approximately 30 minutes. Had a lot of fun with this one, I'm probably going to do a lot more studies like this in the future since they're fairly quick, and I can practice what I learned as well.

knut: Thank you. Yes, all my paintings are done using an Intuos 3 tablet (which I highly recommend, Intuos 4 even, which has more levels of pressure). As for speed, the trick is to do a lot of speedpaintings to help improve your technique. Eventually you'll be amazed at what you can do in 30 minutes, but it does take practice. As for my palette, I did everything with the HSB (or 'K' , in greyscale) slider tool in Photoshop in this case. Hope this helps!

DHTenshi: Yessir! I generally paint very fast when working in greyscale - lighting and values are my strong points I think.

And for today's updates: Lots and lots of gesture drawings, some from imagination, some from photo references, and some were done based on some of the figures in Boris Vallejo's and Juilie Bell's paintings featured in their artbook 'The Ultimate Collection'.

These gesture drawings are very challenging for me, especially when working from imagination, but hopefully it'll get easier after I do the next 1,000

Also did some leg anatomy studies from Bridgman, but gesture is something I'll definitely be practicing for quite a while now.... It's important that I practice this now since that's easily my weakest point as an artist.

Wow man tons of studies! Be more careful with your construction, you seem to get a little sloppy in your torsos from imagination. Draw them with the exact same solidity that you draw those simpler bean forms. Think in terms of forms and gesture, not outline. Keep it up!

Right I'm going to critique your bums. On that last picture, first one perfect, second one - it shouldn't be a C but a lot straighter at the top, the third is a pair of breasts and the forth - knees. Think about the shape you're drawing, what it is used for (no dirty thoughts) and if it looks right. The rest of the body you get fine, but this grates.

I'm gonna ditto what Zebz wrote. I think there's no reason you shouldn't start pumpin out some finished characters. When I saw the first few pages, I was going to suggest that you use fewer lines in your figure sketches, but I see you are already doing that. The one further thing I can suggest, if you decide to step up from thumbnails is to continue with the idea of fewer, shorter lines. Currently, some of your best sketches are the ones were you are not trying to meticulously define all the shapes in the figure.

Fleshing out a figure (or anything) from your head, in my opinion, is like solving a jigsaw puzzle. First you put down the pieces (lines) that you are absolutely confident about. Usually this is enough to define a rough figure. These first lines don't outline the entire figure, they just imply little bits here and there. After that, you deduce from what you already have drawn how the remaining parts will look. And finally, if you get really stuck, you can use a reference to see how to draw that portion.

So I say give it a shot. Use your current method for the initial sketch, and then if you like try the jigsaw approach Don't put down lines that you have no confidence in, and you should end up with some great stuff.

chuck18mp: I try to do at least 1 hour a day, but I end up doing a lot more than that lol. Not sure exactly how many pages I do per day, anywhere from 10-30 I suppose.

Black Spot: Very good point, I have a habit of using circular shapes for those features automatically, which doesn't work in many angles, so I'll definitely be more conscious of it in the future. Thanks again, you always have a great eye for these things

meDrawUC: I'm very eager to pump out soon finished characters, but I feel I'm benefiting to much from these studies as is. I think continuing these studies will benefit the finished work more. I will however be doing more finished work very, very soon, as I feel I'm almost at that point where it should come much easier for me. With that said, you offered me some really amazing advice in terms of fleshing out the figure, I'll definitely be applying it to my sketches soon, thank you!

I have to apologize for not updating for so long; I seem to have had the worst luck as of late; My older cpu crashed and burned last week, so I had to purchase another one which took quite a deal of effort. I had to work non-stop to get work done for various projects as well due to the delay, so I've been ridiculously busy. Everything seems to be going well now, however. I uploaded the sketches I've done since the last update below, which consist of pretty much bits of everything, from gesture (imagination and referenced from various comic books) to the study of the head/skull. I'll update this thread later today with some speedpaints I recently completed as well.

Above image is based on a stock photo I found on deviant art. Originally I was going to incorporate this piece into something I'm working on for a company, but the idea was scrapped for something much better. This one took around 3 hours, painted with an older version of PS before my older computer crashed.
