Hi everyone,

My name's George, 24, and I'm currently working hard to improve on my weaknesses. I'll be drawing and painting every single day to make this happen.

First up are some photo studies of environments. I paint mostly characters, so I want to get out of my comfort zone for a bit. In addition to this, I'm also studying perspective as well. The first couple were done in over an hour or so, the later ones around 20-30 minutes.

Your choice of colors is very good. Nice painting technique. From what I can see so far you should work more on drawing from mind. Anatomy could use some work I think. The last character you posted looks a bit awkward. Arms look kind of short and he appears to be standing on tiptoe? Pose is very stiff too. Your studies look very nice though. Just learnt to apply more of that knowledge to your imagination images and you will be really good.

Hey George, it's always good to see a familiar face around here

My thoughts, based on sketches here and what I have seen before - you should do more studies, especially ones from life. Study anatomy, get rid of the stiffness of your forms. Stiffness can really kill an otherwise good image. I want to see you paint more from your memory and less from photos, they can only give you as much information, and they often flatten the subject.

So keep going! I'm looking forward to your updates.

Bergulf: Thanks for posting - you're right on the money with pretty much every single thing you said. I do agree that I should work more from my mind/imagination, so that's exactly what I'm going to do (in combination with studies from Loomis and the like). My figure work is indeed very stiff as well, I'm probably gonna start doing gesture drawings to break that. Thanks again for your honesty.

Creusa: Thanks; I achieve that effect by running a soft airbrush on the edges, it gives it a very nice, soft effect and it's often the last step I do for a completed painting.

Donna: Hi Donna, great seeing you as well I do agree that I should do more studies. I actually took your advice and did a few live studies of a mannequin, and it was a LOT of fun. What I noticed was that there's so much more information with using a live model, especially in terms of lighting, it's crazy. I'm definitely gonna be doing this practice daily, it's a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot by doing so. As for references, I think I'm only going to use them to do my landscape speed- paintings, as I'm learning a lot about how to handle perspective practicing them. Thanks for your input, appreciate it.

Twan: Thank you, although I do think my faces need work. I'm pretty good in drawing/painting them from 'simple' angles, but I need to practice more on other views. And yes, I'll be updating daily

Farquad: Thank you. I used to struggle with colors for many years; The trick that I found is to avoid starting off with overly saturated colors at the beginning....

And here are some speedpaintings. The first one of the mannequin is painted from life (the first time I've ever done this in a digital medium), and I had a blast with it. There's a ton more information on lighting so I was able to obtain some really interesting values. I'll definitely be painting more from life from now on, it's a lot of fun!

Cool work. Good colours and good application of them in the enviros. On your portraits, be careful about symmetry and proportions, sometimes little flaws can be noticed.
Anyway, keep working hard!

Hyaaah, that's great Painting from life is fun, even though it can induce headaches sometimes There is SO much information photographs just don't capture, from little reflections to crazy hue shifts. It can get hard, but it's very rewarding in the end :]

The first painting is yet another mannequin study from life - this time I gave him an apple, as he got a bit hungry while posing. Unfortunately, he couldn't reach it.

Yeah, looking good. Nice to see lots of quick anatomy studies. Fast'n'loose, that's the best way to learn, ignore the detail work for now, i'd say. But you're doing good so far.

The_Flying_Dutchman: Thank you. You're right on the money in regards to ignoring the details - I actually had a huge problem with that earlier as an artist. I used to get lost in the little details, while everything else suffered as a result....

Sweron: Thank you. I used to struggle a lot with colors - the trick is to study color theory and memorize the color wheel, each color's complimentary colors, etc. until it comes to you naturally.

Here's today's updates. No speedpaintings today, but lots of sketches. I was studying Loomis 'Fun With a Pencil' today, and did a bunch of studies (very few direct copies - most of them are my own using his method). Lots of fun, and I feel I'm getting better at sensing form as a result. I'll practice this for the next two weeks probably then work my way towards the more serious stuff.
