Hey conceptart. Welcome to my first CA sketchbook
Ive been thinking about making a sketchbook on here for a while, seems like the only place worth posting if your pretty unknown like me.
Most of the time il just post on my blog or maybe DA but I never feel like anyone is looking at my stuff, and I definetly dont get alot of crits!

I hope my experience here will be different and that I actually get better from it, and can help others get better too

Il start off by posting a bunch of my studies from this year.
First digital paintings, from photo, life, and masters.

This is where Im at right now, all of the studies up to the photo study of the girl took me a very long time. Recently ive been able to prioritize my time better while painting, which is something ive been struggling with for years.
I wrote 25 mins on the old man study because I was so proud of that haha and I learned alot more than I would have had I rendered it.

Il be posting my drawing (traditional) studies later, and maybe some life drawing If I can get my hands on a camera.

    (post 2)~

Photo study from today, messed this up on a couple of levels haha, water is pretty hard for me, so I need to do more of these. For some reason I switched my method around when I was doing this, which is like what I do with everything thats new to me, I try to do it in some weird impossible way. So in my next try im just going to work dark to light.

After the Frazetta study I wanted to try something from my imagination, I hadn't done this in a long time, so it was fun but also really really hard. Well at first it was easy, but after a while I just kept hitting walls. So now I know where to improve
I really should have been doing more imaginative paintings, it really fuels my desire to learn more. Lately I had been feeling like why the hell am I learning all this stuff, light, colors, composition etc. I forgot why I started painting in the first place.
But the really crap thing is, even though the last year and a half at college Ive learnt a load of stuff, I haven't been applying it to anything that isn't just observation, so when its just me and the paper, no ref... im fucked basically!

Oh nice work man! I really love how your wyeth study was coming, your Frazetta one is nice too, and your figures are absolutely great! Very volumetric. You have a real nice grasp on placement of blocks of color. It's really nice to see. And your watercolor looks good too, you kept the white of your paper, which is like the key yay! Can't wait to see more.

Viki oh - thanks for the comment made my day! haha. Yeah about the watercolor, you're totally right, like its not that I purposely left the white there, I just didn't have the reason to fill it in. Well I was painting semi blind too. Anyway glad you like my stuff!

My studies for this morning, combining color light and tone studies with cool compositions/poses/situations. Alot more interesting than photo studies, but If I was just trying to study color light and tone id probably wana just use a photo, its less distracting.
Coz you dont have to try and draw Brad Pitt from below and mess it up!

great job here. i love the way you do everything. its like you think first before you apply every single brushstroke so everything has a meaning and importance in your studys (the one from inglorious bastards for example with brad pit(t?))

Great work so far man, your studies show a lot of thought even if they did take a while to do. I really like the 2 Frazetta studies you definetly nailed his style.

I like the colours in your original piece, but the figure aint quite right anatomically. It'd be cool to see some of your life drawings, maybe you could get the model to pose in the same pose as this guy and then transfer it into the picture.

Qikalain - thanks, yeah I try to do that most of the time. Its important to do when trying to learn I think. Otherwise it can get frustrating and discouraging, from my experience.

ajtabril - thanks heres an update for ya!

phizpietl - I wish I could do them all fucking day long! I did a mini one today of Lautrec's portrait of Van Gogh

Jacky-Boy - thanks alot man! Now if I could only do Frazetta from imagination! Yeah I have the same thoughts on that piece I did. The truth I could have practiced drawing in that pose first and then did it, But I wanted to see how Id do from my imagination, and I wanted to show how bad I am too haha. IL definitely be posting my best recent Life drawings soon

Master study, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec's portrait of Van Gogh.
The reason I did this was because I was reading through huevaluechroma/ and he gave this image as an example for using color to describe space... or something.
Id been thinking about it so I had to experiment.
    Name: Lautrec-study.jpg

Size: 66.9 KB
After the Lautrec study I got an Idea for a method. Turned out to be pretty fun, I sculpted out a base to work on using only hue, then did one dark pass using a multiply layer, and one pass using an overlay layer.

Thanks for the comment on my SB! If my grasp of colours is good, yours seems to be excellent. Nice job getting a loose, effortless feel on the film studies too. On the painting from mind, the main thing that disturbs me is the skintones and coloring on the figure. There's a warm light everywhere else in the picture but the figure looks like it's surrounded by a dull, diffused lighting like that of a cloudy day. His pants look flat being 100% black too and his left leg is twisted to the brink of believability. Real nice background though.

You seem to know where to improve already so keep those non-refed pictures coming especially! I'm thinking quantity over quality with my environment sketches and I think they've shown some improvement in a couple of weeks' time.

Hello Malakuko. Nice 1st page of your sketchbook. You are already great and as I can see you have experience, I just can imagine what will it be on your 10th sketchbook page.
Your digitals have a really nice quality and I like the way you blend things. I am also crazy about Frazetta's work, and I respect that you are studying his work and that you are studying old paintings.
Good luck in your further work.

smuli - thanks man I wouldnt have the eye for that yet, so Il have to take your word for it haha. Yeah the actual pose itself was giving me so much grief I wasnt really concentrating on colors, I do like the bg tough, maybe I should keep environment and figure paintings separate til I get better. Thanks for the advice

spoonfruit - thanks lol I was scrolling down your SB on the first page and I thought FUCK how did he improve so much!!

OmertA - I'm trying to get my college projects out of the way so I can Frazetta haha I look forward to your study

LtPlissken - Hey man, thanks for the comment Oh yes I hope to improve greatly by then! You too man.

Kambei Shimada - thanks man, yeah problem is im getting good at copying stuff but its freakin impossible to bring it into imaginative stuff! haha, im workin my ass off trying to get it though, so yeah original concepts are definitely on my agenda

Trying out a new technique, that will hopefully make painting from my head easier, those of you who are familiar with it probably already know by the look of the painting. Starting in black and white and then adding color.
So first I did a study from a photo.
    Name: figure-painting-2.jpg
Views: 1540
Size: 203.7 KB
Then a study of a Frazetta painting

    And then from life

What I learned doing these was, you really have to nail the values in the black and white stage, or it just doesn't work. So that's something for me to work on
    Name: self-portrait.jpg
Views: 1492
Size: 143.9 KB
I wanted to do some imaginative stuff after I did the three studies but its a bit late so I think il get up early tomorrow instead
    Learning's fun XD

(hmm just looking at that portrait now seems like the texture is a bit much...)
