P.O.W.! Challenge 39
Deadline: Sunday, March 28, 2010, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Topic: The Telephone...

I actually don't know what's going to happen with this one, but I'm thinking that there are more possibilities here than appear obvious at first. So much of our life seems to be influenced in some fashion by the telephone anymore--bad news, good news, information, stress, working, friendship, critical communication, and just plain using one to scrape the dog poop off your shoe. I think there are some weird ways this one can be approached, from funny to frightening, and even fantasy (imagine Napoleon with a cell phone...)...or actual living phones, or phones that are part of the human body that we can't communicate without at all...

You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color. We're also going to stick with the (almost) three-week Challenge period for a while because it seems to be giving people a bit more time to play.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a TENTATIVE maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts.

REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you're idea requires six pages or so, go for it, but if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO finished by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify.

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

I'm thinking smart phone goes really smart and starts messing with its owner. Should be easy enough to come up with evil things a phone could come up with if brought to life. You know how some people treat there phone as their best friend...better hope it doesn't turn on you

I already have an idea for this one. I hate phones. Phones should all disappear. I hate phones. They intrude on every moment of personal space/time I have. I hate phones. Every time you answer it, it's almost certainly somebody that should never have called you in the first place. I hate phones. Everybody you're having a conversation with thinks it's proper etiquette to stick his finger in your face and answer one of those fucking little cell things every time it rings, like you're a yappy little dog that has to be shushed. I hate phones. I want to kill every phone that exists on the face of the earth, especially cells...

Here is a layer breakdown of my third panel (it may need a few seconds to load). I wanted to play with reflections and transparencies. Our modern phoneworld makes me feel lost in a hall of mirrors sometimes. A lot of opportunities for errors and confusion, and not much chance of real communication or even thinking.

To say I gave you all a bit of extra time on this one may be the understatement of the year. TECHNICALLY, I wasn't...ummmm...extending or being nice or anything...but it's actually better to have two polls open at the same time if circumstances bring their endings close--we get more votes that way...so....I'm still technically a prick...and quit that g'damn snickering...
