Trying to Better Myself (In Need of Advice Please)

I've been signed up on this site/fourm for ages now, but have been far too intimidated to put any of my scetches up. My (rather secret for years) dream was to become an concept artist or/and Illustrater. but for years was too terified to evan try. But that Changed last year while on holiday, i came to the comclusion that there is nothing else i wanna do, and i <b>don't</b> want to say in retail for the rest of my life. So i thought why the hell not try....

I'm Currently at my local community college, studing a simple art and graphics course to get me the grades to get into uni, then (providing i get in) i hope to study Graphic Illustration.

I've got a long way to go, so please, any help will be welcomed ^_^

Last...or should i say, the first time i posted was march 2010! its now december 2011!! Woops!

So anyway, i find myself back on CA because now that i have finished college, and gotten myself an art based career (Tattooist) I'm now even more Driven to be as good as i can be! So I hope to be posting on here more often, hopfully joining in and searching out some helpfull information!


So lets start with what i did in college! It seems i have lost all of my computer files, i have changed laptops, so i'm guessing its all backed up somewhere. I managed to find one of my sketchbooks, here are some (be it crude) photos of the work i did;

I think its only fair to say i did quite a bit of Shading practice for work (tattooing) here are some exsamples

So i've been working to get better at drawing human faces, i managed to find a 'stock' account on DevaintART where one person had a few diffrent shots of her lips, i grabbed my sketchbook and gave it ago, i also found a pic of her pulling a weird face which i started (but got distracted tch lol )


When just using my imagination, i seem to lack the ablitly to put facal features togther, nor am i able to make 'people' look diffrent. Any help or guidence in this area will be very much appreciated!

"Breaking away from the machine" a bit of art to celeabrate my Qualification as a Tattooist. I'll be breaking away from my dead-end retail job and all the negative comments i got way back in primary school (from teachers about how i'd never amount to anything)

if u want some critics here:

your lines are nice and rich variety
but you should practice human proportions and anatomy more (if u wanna draw from mind)

always focus more on the bigger shapes , lines then do the rest

Hey NizhoniWolf well done on getting a job as a tattoo artist, that is very cool. I think your wolf drawings show your potential and it sounds like you have the passion to improve so you just have to keep drawing now and it will all get better.

My best advice is to try to spend 30 mins everyday drawing any object from life. Keep it fun and don't let early failures put you off. If you are anything like me it won't be long before you are totally addicted and it becomes more a way of life.

Wow its been a long while since I've posted! Well I've been off work for a while due to having major surgery.... so I've decided to use this time to work on my art. I am still very much looking for constructive criticism, any help will be welcomed
Here is some more sketches of my Dogs, I find animals brillant to sketch because they never stay still for long, helping me to learn to sketch with flow instead of being 'robotic' and stiff. On the left is Skye, a 5yr old Northern Inuit bitch, and on the right is Hunter, a 2yr old Alaskan Malamute (who is "heavy coated", which is not the same as a long coat) I always look at his fur and wonder how I would draw/illustrate his fur. So I tried to sketch the fur pattern/direction of his back


Some more generic sketches of clothing/fabric, another thing I need to practice. And some random bits, I tried my hand at shadows as well as shading.

I always like to see beginners in the same position as me, and follow them if I recognise myself in their practices and studies. One day, maybe you and me will look back on this together, as very good amateurs or even professionals (who knows?).
I agree on the part with anatomy. If you want to draw from your own imagination, better start practicing proportions. It helps me a lot, I think, and gives me confidence when I draw objects. Nothing is so tricky as foreshortening, but at those moment it turns out right it really gives a boost to much else.

Great works! (Man, it's such a relief to finally see someone else posting anthro art as well, I was starting to feel very misplaced here xD )
It may be a good idea to do some more gesture drawings and other live studies since the poses all look quite rigid now (especially the arms). But I really admire your canines; very good proportions and accurate fur pattern (especially on the heads) c:

Your sketchbook is pretty darn cool, I've subscribed to it I want to do gesture drawings, but I get stuck on where to start...do or do I not use refs etc etc...

Maan do I need to continute practicing hands! Top hand is mine, the middle hand belongs to my boyfriend. So do the two the two quick sketches (while he is reading is new book lol bless) and the bottem left one is of my lodger she is an 'older woman'

Hey NizhoniWolf! Look at you hand carefully, do all the fingers conncet to the palm on the same heith? How do the fingers varie in length? When you want to study sth try to analyse it very carefully. Try to understand all those little relations. Its great that you do so many studys! What I would recommend you is getting art books like Figure drawing for all its woth for example to learn the very fundamentals. You seem to like creatures an particulary wolfes. May you find some good stuff about that aswell. The instruction in books will increase your improvement a lot. I personaly waisted so much time by trieng to figure everything out by myself by drawing from imagination.

It’s good that you’re trying different subject matters. I’d probably recommend looking at basic structure for the hands so that you can learn how they work, that way you’ll be able to portray them more accurately And art books focusing on the fundamental like mentioned above will help a lot as well. Keep going!
