    Thank You TAD:Discovery

To Jason, All the instructors, and All my fellow students,

    THANK YOU!!

Now that classes have come to an end I will truly miss hearing everyone's voices spewing sweet art knowledge 3 hrs+ a night. I pretty much gave up a few years ago and just picked up a pencil again in November of 09. When I saw CA was doing the TAD program I jumped in with both feet.

I'm 30 and thought I had a decent grasp on art and was just lost in the thoughts of the kind of art I wanted to create. The first day of TAD rocked my world and snapped me out of my funk; now I'm just rolling. As I said in chat the other night I may not be a better artist at this point, but I'm certainly a different, more knowledgeable person. You have rekindled a fire and re-awoken the art beast that was snoozing within. I've started writing and sketching daily again and without Discovery I doubt that would have happened.

The ability to have crits and portfolio reviews from several of my modern art idols has been most beneficial. CF Panye saying "Man, that's killer; don't screw it up when you color", has been the highlight of my art endeavors to this point. Knowing who my idols looked up to has been very helpful, I have been so busy concerning myself with the most current hotness that I forgot the masters. Hell I didn't just forget, in many cases I just didn't know. So again Thank you for the enlightenment.

I know that TAD: Discovery was the steal of the century, but if you happen to run one of these again or decide to have a reunion please please please don't lose me email.

To my fellow students - I hope to see you all continue to drive forward and prosper. I hope we can continue to push each other and share bits of knowledge through our sketchbooks and posts. I want to see you all producing like mini art machines over the coming years.

So yeah....It's over...I miss it already. But as I improve I will continue to post. Saving up money now to sign up for Visual Lit. Program. Long Live CA, Long Live TAD.

    Take Care,
    John White | InkDrop

I`m kind of sad...last day of Discovery, i really wish to win the lottery or something like that to attend TAD this year lol...well, for that i would have to start playing the lottery on first place.

Ok, so, about the program. THIS WAS MADE OF PURE AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!
Thanks so much to every one, specially Jason and John for putting this together.

It`s impossible to describe the amount of knowledge that was given through out this 5 weeks. And the people, well, first of all you have some of the best talking and teaching, and everyone is so passionate by the subject and do this with such a pleasure, that, for me is one of the most important things: beside the fact that they know A LOT, they teach it in a great way!

Also, it was very fun to share the classes with such a nice group of students, joking and sharing links and references.

Well, guys, this was a wonderfull experience, and, even though i`ll not be able to attend TAD this years, i`ll try next year, and would love to see some other short programs as this one.

    Again, THAAANNNNKKKK YOOOOOOOOU SO MUCH!!!!!!

    (Orlando here, by the way)

Everything that I've wanted to say has already been said in these posts. I know I probably won't be able to attend TAD this year but I am going to BUST MY ASS for next year!!

It is sad that this is the last day ...but, of course I ain't gonna fret because I know that we'll all see each other again. (that's also what the boards/forums are for )

...Now, as for me...time for me to work hard and enjoy once again, what I lost many years ago.

Until then...THANK YOU!!!*Bows x10 to TAD and it's instructors/behind-the-scenes crew* and hope we can do these events/classes again.

Where to start, where to begin...

I can't possibly describe the thrill and excitement I had getting ready for Discovery. I'd never been so excited for class before in my life. There was a plethora of thoughts and feelings coursing through as the start date closed in...I felt adrenaline for action, a hunger for knowledge, and nervousness (especially for portfolio review week). And yet, by the time things came to a close, I didn't feel anything negative at all. Instead, I felt like I've become a much stronger and deeper person with wisdom to bear and a bold sense of direction.

From start to finish, I took the class seriously. Every inch of attention was given to the instructors and every bit of knowledge was scribbled down into my notebook. Within the 5 weeks, I'd filled nearly every page of the 1-inch thick book.

I hope that I've been a respectable student, and I hope to continue my educational endeavors with everyone soon, in June. Words can't describe how grateful I am and how privileged I was to be here. To Jason Manley, Brent Watkinson, Sterling Hundley, John & Mark English, Jon Foster, Anita Kunz, George Pratt, Coro, Gary Kelley, Carl Dobsky, Terry Brown, Kemp, Sam, Rich, Whit, Jason Chan, Chris Payne, Scott, Zack, Mike, Sparth, Brad Clark, my fellow students, and everyone else who helped to make it happen...to each and every one of you, I owe an heartfelt thank you as it's been a tremendous honor~

Altough ive only been participating in the fourth week, I have to say, thank you so much! I am also working as a horse at the moment, drawing painting, mainly stills, and I have been drawing out of my head for 10 years and did not have the guts to do it from life, nor the interest... so thumbs up! And if something like this will happen again, post it!!!

I'd like to add my thanks to everyone involved in putting the program together.

I never really had the opportunity to go to art school so almost everything I learned was new to me! I knew I wanted to get back into art but was all over the place with what exactly I wanted to do with it, now I have a plan (and copious scribbled notes which need to be tidied up and kept handy!) More life drawing and more life drawing... oh and I learned that oils might not be beyond me!

I still have a couple of on demand to catch up on so it's not over yet...

    Smile THANKS!

Thank to all you guys for teaching me so much in so little time, I wish I could do TAD, but having a year left to do at Uni means I won't be free to do it for while yet. (Maybe you'll do an European pod in a couple of years *hint* *hint*)

I still can't believe I was taught by all these awesome artists! John, Mark, Anita, Brent, Sterling, Jon, George, Coro, Mike, Gary, Terry, Mr. Payne, Carl, Whit, Kemp, Rich, Sam and Jason Chan... thank you guys!

Also thanks to all the other students that made Discovery a fun learning environment and dedicated themselves fully to the program. (looking at you Brinkman) - I can't wait to see some awesome art come from everyone. (but don't make it too awesome, don't want you to make me look bad )

I want to thank all of you guys again and everyone else that made Discovery possible. You've inspired me to finally start doing more drawing and painting and you can look forward to seeing my work soonish on the threads!
You guys can't imagine how much help you've been to get me back on track with my art.

    Loads of Love to Everyone,
    Crimson

P.S. Jason Manley, why didn't you do any teaching you make my face sad, but love you for organizing it anyway!

I can only agree with everything already mentioned!

After those five weeks I feel like I have gained so much invaluable advice which lead to so many new things I will think about while working on new pictures. Besides a lot of new input, Discovery also strengthened my belief that The Art Department will be a major success. The amazing effort of their instructors and staff will provide the highest quality of education and the students will significantly benefit from this unique opportunity. Since I will probably not be able to attend right away in June I wish all of the participants a lot of fun and hopefully I'm able to join in the future!

Thanks a lot for bringing art education to the next level

    Just blew my mind....
    So many information!
Has just been the best learning experience I had...EVER!

I was not sure about sending my stuff to the portfolio review, but I did and the advices I got were just AWESOME. A total Boost in confidence (I'm actually trying to find a way to rip the audio from the ondemand on my portfolio review so i can have it loop while I work hahah).

I really hope this is definitely only the first of a long series of mini TAD learning experiences because I would definitely do it again.

Thanks to all the instructors you guys have been EPIC!

now sorry but I have a ton of stuff to review

    Active Students

John and I have been doing the Illustration Academy for 15 years. We see all kinds of students, and like we talked about the first couple of days of Discovery, the best students are the "active students" as opposed to the "passive students."

I think each of the Discovery students took an active role in their education for the past 5 weeks. The first step was signing up to be there, then you asked great questions, helped us and were patient with a few technical difficulties, learned new and complex things that you had never been exposed to before, and produced some amazing figure drawings and Conceptual Portraits.

You exposed your inner-most thoughts and showed the bare and skeletal fragments of your thinking with your thumbnails and sketches and ideation processes. You showed the instructors and the world, (literally the whole world!), your weaknesses and your strengths with the intention of getting better and moving upward and forward. You showed no ego and no fear.

I am personally glad to have had contact with all of you. I know our paths will cross again in the future. Here is why I know this....... in 1997, Montalvo Machado from Sao Paulo, Brazil was attending The Illustration Academy for the second time when it was held in the Kansas City, Missouri, USA area. At the end, Montalvo came to me and was trying to say good bye. I stopped him and said, "No, I won't say good bye, I will say, 'Until we meet again.'"

12 years later, Montalvo came back to The Illustration Academy and gave a presentation to our students. He told me he was glad I did not say good bye to him 12 years earlier.

Things happen like that with like-minded people that share a keen interest in the pursuit of excellence. I know we will meet again sometime, somewhere.
Thanks for being an amazing first group of students for us! There will never be another "first group!" Only you guys can say you were the first!

Thanks again for being attentive, smart, dedicated, and being "active
    students!"

    Brent

    Thank you infinity times!!!

I would like to second a lot of what is being said here. I will be forever thankful for this opportunity. I will be forever thankful for every one of the instructors. So much great information everyday from every instructor. Very hard to put into words the impact this last 5 weeks has had on me. So I will do one better - I will show you all my appreciation through my art.

    Thank You forever,

Inkdrop's story is fairly similar to my own. I'm nearly 26, graduated from the art school in a big state university, which meant no portfolio reviews, no stringent skill development, no community. I was lucky enough to have my student job at the same university change into a full-time one after I graduated. After working day in an day out in tiny, windowless office on projects I had little say in creatively or otherwise for two and a half years, I was starting to accept the scenario as my fate.

Then along came Discovery. It seems melodramatic to say, but Discovery had a life-changing affect on me. Not only did the daily tsunami of information arm me with a whole new set of tools and boost of inspiration, but I saw for the first time what it's like to be in a group of people who love picture making and love talking about it. Discovery led to a sense of camaraderie with a big group of my CA peers in a way I'd never before experienced. Discovery also gave me the drive to try to change my situation, to not passively accept my lot but work and work hard toward my life's goal.

I think the reason it was so affecting is because this group of top-in-their-field professionals were taking the time to address our work, answer our questions and stay late to make sure we got all the content. The instructors of Discovery really care about picture making, are passionate about passing on their knowledge and that is contagious! So, I'd like to say a big old "THANK YOU!" to all the instructors and students who made Discovery the amazing 5 weeks it was, I hope to shake your hand some day in the future and thank you in person.

    Andy

I know I'm not alone in saying that the past 5 weeks have been out of this world. I can't remember if I said this already or not (I only have so much room in my brain and all this art stuff is pushing everything else out), but every single one of the instructors should count themselves lucky that eating someone's brains doesn't actually give one their knowledge or their cerebral matter would have been the main course for many by now.

To have the opportunity to learn from the people who have been leading the classes has been truly invaluable. Discovery was easily the purchase of the decade and the experience of a lifetime. The instructors were so accessible and to have them share their experiences and knowledge was just incredible. You see the syllabus and it says that the class will be led by George Pratt and Brent Watkinson and you're thinking "Sweet! These guys kick much ass. I'm totally stoked." What it doesn't say is that Anita Kuntz, John English, Jon Foster, Gary Kelley, and Jason Manley are also there and that you won't have time to create because you'll be picking pieces of your brain up off the floor for the rest of the night. The MB guys are a riot and just as accessible and forthcoming with their experiences and knowledge. And knowing that they have so much fun makes it that much more exciting to bust my ass and get into the field. Every single instructor has been a wealth of information and talent and it was amazing to be able to pick their brains.

While waiting for my portfolio review was absolutely nerve wracking, it was so far beyond awesome to have some professional input on my works. What they had to say, as well as everything in the 4 preceding weeks, is definitely going to help me take my stuff to the next level. "Thank you" seems insufficient. I have never been so excited and enthusiastic about painting. It's so easy to get lost in everything that sucks about your work, know that it's not working but not know why, it could be better but you don't know how... But the portfolio reviews (and not just my critique, but hearing everyone else's) were invaluable towards resolving those issues.

I mentioned this on the John English Landscape thread, but I'll say it again- it's like I've been smacked in the face with a giant whoosh of freedom (don't worry, I can't afford a lawyer). I'm not worried about screwing up (thanks in large part to tracing paper!!), I'm not nervous about it not being perfect, I just want to paint! Every single class ended with me being so inspired and enthusiastic that the hard part was sitting still long enough to figure out what to do. I'd be sitting on the floor, surrounded by paints and brushes dumped out around me, pencils, charcoal, pastels of nearly every type, erasers, a dozen different types of paper, canvas, just trying to figure out what to do with all this artistic energy. Should I do some figure drawing, a still life (which really had a new life breathed into it in Carl Dobsky's class), or start slamming out some thumbnails for some of my silly ideas?

It truly has been an adventure. A real exploration, not just of art, the fundamentals, the different arenas, but of me and who I want to be as an artist. I wouldn't trade the last 5 weeks for anything in the world. It's been a ton of fun getting to know more about the instructors as well as my fellow classmates and seeing them grow as artists too. Oh! And one more thing before I end this text wall. Something that really impressed me and blew my mind was the fact that we weren't some anonymous username to the instructors. If you participate and are active, they remember you. I've had classes at university that had fewer students and the instructors weren't that involved. Thanks to the instructors for that and for staying on days classes ran late. You guys really went above and beyond and I can't even begin to express my gratitude.

Much thanks and love to all involved in this. I really do mean that it's been an adventure and I'm sad to see it finished. But if you'll excuse me, I have some painting to do.

I just finished watching the first day of the on demand portfolio review week. Unfortunately, I was only able to sign up for the Entertainment and Portfolio weeks. I really really wanted to sign up for the whole thing but just have way too much going on at the moment.

Anyway, these classes are so informative. And if you are able to actually be there live...even better...they're such a blast! If I was younger and just starting out I would be signing up for the SF TAD POD for sures. I mean if you want to acquire Enlightenment...what could possibly be better than starting your journey at a Buddhist temple in Tibet? Right!?

Thank you all so much for doing this...and being here for us...and for enlightening us.

    Thumbs up epic 5 weeks

I've had a few friends go through the Illustration Academy (*cough* Will Godwin & Duncan Robertson) in the past year or two, so I have heard many great things from them about the instructors and the quality of instruction. When i heard from Noah Bradley (one of the peers that i look up to, who also attended Discovery) that CA and the Illustration Academy were doing this thing together, it didn't take long to convince me to jump on board.

I have definitely enjoyed being in the classroom, and i am very grateful for the wealth of knowledge shared by all the instructors. Terry Brown's history lesson is one I will never forget, and the Entertainment week has given me greater insight on the industry that drew me to pursue visual arts. Jason Chan's lesson was one of my favorites, as well as Brent Watkinson's class on lighting and reference shooting

I also want to thank Sterling and Kemp who reviewed my portfolio, for letting me know the weak areas to improve upon, but also pointing out the areas that i've improved from.

Thanks so much for the great month of education! I had no doubt that TAD was going to be a great opportunity, but Discovery has just confirmed it even more. I won't be able to attend this year because I have just one year of school left and want to finish it off, but I'll be using this information and be working hard til next year, at which point I'll definitely be applying.

First of all, I really want to say thank you. Thank you to all of the instructors who poured so much time and effort, going above an beyond the call of duty. I was telling one of my other teachers at school that I am thankful that he takes his time and really cares. There aren't any special paychecks or raises for being a great educator. So thank you to everyone for just being flat out AMAZING. I also want to thank the organizers and tech guys who attended every class with patience. Thank you to the instructors who read these forums and took them seriously.

2nd, All of the other students have been awesome. I don't know any other artists in my city. All of my classmates at school are premed students and it was fantastic and inspiring to see everyone's work ethic and skillz. You guys really pushed me to throw everything in and bust my ass.

As far for the actual classes? They were a steal. I mean literally, highway robbery. I was a little skeptical about attending TAD until the DISCOVERY program was announced, and I knew my fears would either be confirmed or denied. All my fears about attending a brand new school have been completely dismissed. I know the quality and quantity of information is second to none. I would have to say that I have been an incredibly huge supporter for TAD since the beginning, and I will continue to do so. My life and direction has been changed for the better because of the people who have put this program together.

As I say to my family, If I am a car then TAD is my wheels and tires. With the two together I am complete and pretty.... but I still lack something. I lack the fuel and drive to go down the road. Thank you to all of the instructors and people in my life for being my fuel to move towards my future. I can only say this, the love and support will not be in vain. I will see you at the end of the road. Hell, hopefully I will see you in Austin and we can ride together.

    Thank You,
    -Evan Norman

It was really a perspective changing 5 weeks for me. I have great respect for the instructors and TAD. I hope I will continue to learn from you as a TAD student. Thanks for your friendly attitude and patience.

    THANK YOU!

Sitting here typing this message i'm still trying to come to grips with the almost overwhelming amount of information that was graciously passed on to me by the instructors over these past five weeks. It's like a bomb went off and now i'm picking up the pieces; rebuilding a new and better artist out of myself.

This was hands down the most intense and inspirational learning experience i've ever had and i hope it isn't the last.

Getting a fifteen minute portfolio review from Jason Manley, John English, George Pratt, Brent Watkinson, Brad Clark and Sparth (all at the same time!!) was just icing on the cake. They didn't tell we what I wanted to hear, they told me what I NEEDED to hear. These guys honestly care about making us better artists.

Discovery was a truly worthy investment. My only regret is that i dont get to wake up and go hang out with these guys again...until next time.

    THANK YOU!

    Thumbs up WOW

Is all I can say...I agree with everything written in this thread and then some.

I cannot say enough good things about the instructors and their breadth of knowledge...or about the dedication they had to staying on the line and talking to us for sometimes 5 hours....There were few sessions that ended on time...so they really gave above and beyond.

Now....here's my tiny encouragement to those of you who think you are "too old" to go to TAD or to study art in general....I am over 50....much older than almost all of you and I still think it is worth it to try new things and stretch my imagination and my art skills. So, if I can do it at my advanced age (heh) any of you can do it. It is never too late to make art!

That said, I can't take time off from paying the bills to attend such a wonderful and extensive program like TAD....but I heartily encourage any of you who are starting out or polishing their skills, to attend if you can! You will be a much better and much more marketable artist when you are done. And then you can make art and earn your living at the same time....and that is the best!

I will keep checking in on these threads and looking at the work everyone is doing...I can't wait to see what comes next for all of us!

Thank you to all of the fabulous instructors and the behind the scenes helpers who made this the best art instruction I have had in a very long time.
    Helen
PS--I work as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator (just funny vector art for kids...nothing I wanted to show in my Discovery portfolio) and worked in the past as an Art Director for a couple of small publishers and Magazines. I can tell you, the advice given for working with Art Directors was spot-on!

My mind was a brand new jar of pickles, and only TAD had the soggy towel to open it.

    Thank You!!!!!

So Discovery is over and what did it all mean? Why should you care? I think by this point in the posts its relatively clear that it was life changing. I agree. You may be wondering how it compares to “real school.” “Sure,” you think “that’s good for those people, but online learning isn’t for me, or I don’t have much more to learn, or I am already a pro.” All I can tell you is you don’t know what you don’t know. To parents questioning a school like this- get used to it, this is the future. In a few years, you’ll be seeing everyone jumping on the bandwagon, but it all started here.
I spent five years at art college and graduated 8 years ago. I don’t work as an artist because I was never given the tools to succeed. I was shuffled through the system. I didn’t know how to make the jump or even where to look…until now that is. I can tell you from experience, if you are a creative person, there are few things as soul crushing as being enslaved to corporate minutia. CA and the Discovery program were literally answers to my prayers. Having done both, I can truly say without a doubt the Art Department is the way to go. Its not that I didn’t get anything out of art school; I did, but let me put it in perspective for you.
In art school, I was shuffled through the system. There were many politics. At the time the academic chairs were the fine arts people, so they got all the attention and all the funding. Illustration, not so much. I had two maybe three portfolio reviews in 5 years. I even had a portfolio class! When pieces were reviewed they were critiqued by peers who weren’t constructive because they didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. The teachers skipped over and just said “Yeah, there is a lot of the same stuff going on here, just keep practicing.” Practice what? You didn’t tell me anything? Also, in most cases, these were not actively working professionals, they may have been at one point, but not now. In contrast, in Discovery, several instructors, ALL professionals discussed every student who presented. Whether it was homework or the portfolio review. They stayed until everyone had their chance, regardless of skill level, regardless of if it had been said before. Every single student had a fresh start. We were taught specifically for where each of us was at developmentally. If you came in with stick figures you got better, or if you were really good, you got better. Put that in perspective- top industry professionals staying for hours past the end of class to address everyone and offer collaborating points of view vs. a washed up, uninformed “teacher” who doesn’t care enough or have the time to address the people sitting right in front of them.
I was also surprised how much like “real school” it felt like. There was a camaraderie, a sense that we were all on this journey together. Personalities show up, just like in a “real class.” You make connections with people. You feel like you know them, but you have never met and could be thousands of miles away. Even though I sat in a room by myself, I was not alone. I never felt isolated the whole time. In fact I felt part of something bigger than myself and I was proud to be there.
Sure we learned a lot in Discovery, but you can learn stuff anywhere; a book, online, a friend. What you will not learn anywhere, that I have only ever seen addressed was here, is How To Think. In school, it was all about technique. That was your “style.” It was all about how well you rendered or how closely you copied your reference. Here, they taught us to THINK. They taught us to be problem solvers. They taught us true point of view is how you solve a problem, not how refined your handling of medium is. My entire thought process has been transformed. Even my sketchbook. If someone had told me about a sketchbook class I would have thought they were crazy. It’s a sketchbook…you sketch in it. That could not have been further from the truth. Ideation and the use of sketchbooks has been completely changed in my mind. As I said above, you don’t know what you don’t know.
I learned that drawing out of your head isn’t always(and most times) practice. You are simply doing the same things you have always done. You’ll never grow or learn that way. At least not in ways that will make a significant difference in your growth. One of the most exciting things I learned was that you don’t have to retire. Not only is it not too late for me, but I don’t have to stop either. Maybe its just me, but I found that incredibly exciting.
There were a lot of lessons about form, lights and darks, shape etc. but for me it was truly inspiring. As I said, you can learn things in many places, but very few will truly inspire you. Very few will change the way you literally look at the world around you. Discovery has done that for me. They have given me confidence and determination. They have given me hope. They have given me my future. I will work hard and our paths will cross again so that I may thank you in person. You have truly given me my life back. I am forever indebted.
One of the things talked about the most is the positioning of a light thing against a dark thing and a dark thing against a light thing. I think this is truly the perfect metaphor for Discovery and the Art Department. They are the light against the darkness of art education. “Go towards the light Carol Ann, go towards the light.”
Sorry this is so long, I could talk about this stuff forever
A most sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this possible. You have truly changed many lives.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Discovery was an amazing, enlightening experience. I can honestly say that it has undoubtedly bettered me as an artist, and sped up my progress as an artist.

thanks for everything, 5 amazing weeks. discovery changed me as an artist, in the last two years I tried just to become better and lost my feeling for what art means to me. Now I know again why I fall in love with drawing. Discovery was a lot of fun and had so much great informations, because of the simple fact that the teachers and the other students were so accurate in becoming better artists, so my thanks doesnt go to the teachers alone, I also want to thank the community and I am very happy to be a part of it and was part of discovery.
I am looking forward for everything that comes and I also hope that I can join as often as possible. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, have fun sincerely bernhard graf.
