Great studies in here mate. I advice you to focus more on the structure of the things that you're drawing, especially heads. Think more in terms of forms fitting into one another rather than just putting down lines. Make sure you capture the whole head structure of the person you're drawing first, then mark off where the features should go. You really have to get the proportions correct otherwise it just won't look right. Check this out:

fantasyartist: Thanks a lot for your crit. and the link. I didn't know the website yet. But I can't view all plates as JPG or PDF. Do you have them all? I don't even know where the most forms move into another (muscle groups, parts where the bones aren't direct under the skin). I have to study the volumes behind, but I am really trainee in seeing the unshown form behind the skin!
Here comes another sketch post. The last one (shaolin monk drapery) isn't finished. I lost the drawing flow between all these fold structures.
Great work! I see that your faces have improved a lot in last works. I'd reccomend to define well the body structure before starting to draw, and, especially, to its exact shape. I think those "blobs" you used in, for example, the chest of the closest fencing man, aren't helping you, especially given the difficulty of drawing the chest in that perspective.

hey nice updates your contour line looks great very strong but i still think you should work more on your shading try doing some drawing exercises where you dont draw using lines just blocks of shading try using very faint lines where you have to but then when you shade in the drawing try to get all your lines to disapear it will look much more life like and three dimensional
... didnt see the last post. the guy kicking looks really solid and the shading is improving you can see your hard work paying off

PrsnSweeney: Thank you! I haven't used that "blocking" technique because I just haven't "seen" the different shapes/forms to understand and draw it that way. I tried it by drawing these circle end ellipsis lines and the only difference was the space between the lines or how hard I pushed the pencil.
I worked a bit more on the monk's clothes. The leg was too short and the kicking foot hasn't enough space on the paper anymore. The 2nd piece is again a trial with line shading. I need to practice that.
I think I have the opposite bad habit you have, I tend to focus too much on the costruction thing and less on the outside looking (silhouette,line quality etc) but I know each approach can't work without the knowledge of the other. Anyway, your improvement is considerable, I can only suggest more costruction study and drawing from immagination. The hatching works wery well!

hey nice updates the improvements you made on the guy kicking looks really good your shading has alot of good values and contrast hmmm a book on hatching ...? well the best hatchin book would probably be one on using ink or inking try the online book archive this site has and there is a book called the american drawing book by gadsby chapman and the whole thing helped alot but there is some stuff on hatching in there and to see the shadows and blocks of form try squinting your eyes a little so you cant see the little details just the darks and lights

I am currentliy thinking about the anatomy, such a creature has to have (spine etc.) because it also has do be able to lay down to sleep like a horse and it has to be able to stand up after sleeping.

hey i like your updates really like the frazzeta and when you say you dont want to create drawings with the depth of shading as the monk , waht do you mean exactly? like are you just aiming for a strong contour with some shading to support the form? o and i like the one you did of the girl layin on her back with one leg in the air

prsnsweeney: I wanted to shade with crosshatching, but I don't see and understand all parts (muscledetails) to draw the "circlelines" at the right position. At the moment I see the contour, but you can see the big parts without lines in many of the drawings. These empty parts weren't meant to be empty by a kind of a "reducing" style ore faster finishing of a piece. I honestly often don't know how to draw skinparts with little differences (like a female back) / flattened muscleparts (like the stomach muscles of a bodybuilder, see attached image). This lack of knowledge is the biggest drawing problem at the moment. Hope, I'll understand it one day.
I saw the assignment to do the following at http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=187612:
A. 100 female head gestures (no more than 5 minutes each), from life and imagination (50 each)
B. 50 female gesture drawings (full figure). Half from life, half from imagination (50 each). No more than five minutes each.
I haven't attended the streaming class, but I'll try to join this "little" exercise without the imagination - part and finish it in the next x (?) months.

The first 10 female heads (each maximum 5 minutes) and the first 10 female figures (each maximum 5 minutes). I had fun with the timeframe and I was surprised about the "fast" drawings.
