    Joe Kubert School

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had some info on the Joe Kubert school of Cartooning and Graphic art. If anyone here went there and what not. I'm wanting to go to school hoping that'll give me the passion and motivation to become a better artist, and just to be aroung other creative people in the flesh. I'm mainly wanting to go to JKS because all the classes are taught by professionals that work "in the field" just kinda put off 'cause I have to put together a portfolio and I've never done. All I've done is sketches and doodles. I've started to ramble, was going to give me background info butt I think I've said all I need to so I should post this before I get off track again. thnx

I went to the school for 1 year...

It can be a wealth of knowledge, but it can also be a waste of money...

The motivation you say you are hoping to develop will not help you, you need to be highly motivated from the get go...

if you wanna know how to develop motivation, work for a lil while(especially in a job you hate), then you'll realize how much you'd rather be drawing for a living...

JKS is not a school for slackers, it's a good school with good teachers..

And you'll best be served by attending a college...and if you wanna be in or around NYC, Fashion Institute of Technology, School of Visual Arts, Pratt..etc will do you some good...

ANd if you do a search for portfolios and how to make one, i'm pretty sure you'll find a thread discussing it...

hey man, just saw this thread-

I went to the Kubert school back in 94 for a year.IWent for 2 months my second year & left.

I can't whole heartedly recommend going there.

My advice to you is try to get in touch with some current Kubies and ask them if they feel the school is worth it.Maybe the school is different now from when I was there.

You could take a trip up there for a campus tour or have your portfolio review in person. That way you could try to corner some students and ask them what they think.(go to the mansion or carriage house).

I ended up moving to L.A. and taking classes at schools where guys like Kevin Chen,Feng Zhu and Glen Vilppu taught at. The level of instruction was on a whole other level than at Kubert school.

Just because someone is a professional and their art rocks doesn't mean they can teach.

Don't be stuck on one school- check em all out!

I'm a current 2nd year kubert student. From what I saw last year, they seemed to have accepted everyone that could afford to attend there. Your drawing ability means nothing starting out. Your willingness to learn is what will get you accepted into the school. You definately get out of what you put into the school. Most kids strait out of highschool seem to have a real difficult time with the school.
