    Josh's Sculpts - Octopus Rider

Newest stuff is on the last page.

This is my first post in the sculpture forum although I’ve been lurking for ages.
Just finished a sculpt of Nightcrawler based on a drawing by Skottie Young. I realised pretty early on that I wasn’t going to get it exactly like the drawing but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
He’s about 18cm tall sculpted in Chavant.

Thanks for looking, any feedback much appreciated.

And the drawing by Skottie Young that i based it on

Dude, i love it, what an awesome style too. Interesting wire method, why did you use his spine as the anchor?
Cant get enough of that face

Thanks MrAnimation, I attached him to the base with wire in his feet but it wasn’t very stable so I added the wire from his back to stop him falling backwards. From what I’ve seen on this and other forums the spine seems a pretty common anchor point

Here is a slightly better shot of his face.

    Thanks guys,

He’s sculpted in oil based clay so I won’t be baking him. I’m planning on moulding and casting him which I’ve never tried it before, hopefully all going well he will eventually get painted.

I’ve read and watched a bunch of tutorials on moulding and casting and I’m somewhat confident I can pull it off. The arms, head and tail all come off and I don’t think I’ll have a problem with them but I’m not sure the best way to go about the body, especially the shoulders on his uniform. Anyone got any ideas?

Bat Man or just a bat wearing a suit

Still haven't started moulding Nightcrawler, hoping to get started on that in the next few days. In the meantime here's my latest sculpt.

Finally took some photos of my finished Nightcrawler.
It took far longer to get this thing finished than i expected, I think i spent about as much time painting and then repaint it as i spent on sculpting.

So you succeeded the casting? Was it diffcult?

Thanks Sculptlab, I wouldn’t say it was difficult but I did make a few mistakes along the way, luckily nothing that couldn’t be fixed and I learnt a lot that should make it easier if I ever do it again.

    Excellent Nightcrawler sculpt.

The paint work on the bat has transformed it! Really came alive with colour, great job.

Been working on the same sculpt for ages and started to get bored with it so I decided to start something new I could do quickly, here are the results, both done in Chavant medium.

Thanks Kellye, I’ve not heard of Ten O'Clock People before but it sounds interesting.

Thanks Deon, glad you like them.

I think this one is pretty much finished except for the base which I'm not sure what to do with.

Very nice stuff. Loving the crispness of the Nightcrawler sculpt. The Bat Man/Man Bat is great, what a cool concept. Crazy awesome dragon, too!

My latest sculpt, about halfway done.
I made the mistake of sculpting the head before I had the design of the body fully sorted out, now I'm thinking the two don't look like they belong together.

These are some very nice sculpts!

I like the little heads, and the paint jobs!

They could easily be in the stores for sale.

Just finished my first attempt at a latex mask.

    Sculpted in Roma Plastilina
    Name: mask_clay.jpg
Views: 4368
Size: 163.9 KB

I had some trouble getting the sculpt out of the mold and I broke the forehead off which turns out was way to thin.
After gluing it back together and re-enforcing it with plaster bandages I patched up the cracks as best I could with hydrocal.
    Name: mask_mold.jpg
Views: 4330

Here's the finished piece, still not to happy with the eyes but after numerous repaints I decided to call it finished.
    Name: mask_latex.jpg

Also finished painting my dragon which turned out better than I was expecting.

Wow, I haven't seen your styuff for a while and there's a definite improvement! Very interesting dragon, especially the scales. As for the mask - it is great, both the detail and the paintjob. Maybe you could fix the eyes some day

Thanks Evilivo, the dragon was a mix of chameleon, crocodile, turtle and the face was original canine looking, it just evolved as I worked on it.

Here's the sculpt for my next latex mask, still some work to do on it but hopefully I’ll have it finished soon.

The paint job on the dragon sculpt is especially awesome, looks like a tortoise shell. That's a crazy looking mask! I'm also really digging the skeletal/demon-horned character.
