I'd just like to throw in some thoughts.

Algenpfleger - Your portfolio is amazing! You're clearly the best artist in the poll... But your work is so good I have no doubt you'd receive a scholarship even if you didn't win the community vote!!
Janaschi - I really don't think you need to worry about him. Also, congrats on your scholarship

Anyway... Because Algen's pretty much a sure thing I sent my vote to Moai. I've mainly been involved in the Community Activities part of CA and he was always a regular COW participant (and critique giver) when I started here. He's come such a long way over the past years!!

algenpfleger your work is otstanding, the last image (the nude and worms..) is a masterpiece! but i agree with cognition.sb, actually i think that with such amazing skills you could just be looking, and probably finding a job in the industry!no real need for a school in my opinion..
So i'll vote for fersteger, great style and variety, love the comic page and pencil drawings.

I voted for the person who I felt has the most room for improvement and who will get the most out of this scholarship. I didn't base my vote on the prettiest pictures (as most people would naturally have done) but the people behind them.

I have no problem with that. I just want to make sure it's from the community. Granted people will ask for friends and such to go vote for them, but remember the title of this thread does say "CA Community Scholarship" think about that title for a moment before asking people to vote for you.

There are fortunately other opportunities for scholarships so don't think this is the only one.

I also want to make sure people understand I also have no problem with people new to CA. However, I don't want to see a bunch of new accounts that have no intent of being ever used again just to push a vote. Seems counter-intuitive to being a CA community member.

Anyways, I'm hitting redundancy and I really have other things to work on. I'm sorry for having to bring it up but when I noticed the problem I wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page for what this scholarship is about.

    Knoxie,

I am pretty much in the same boat as you man. Its like that "big fish in a little pond" thing. I may not be the best here (or even ONE of them for that matter- especially since i've never done digi) but there are plently of people who believe I am the best in my community. That is mainly where those votes are coming from. People who love my work, who love art in general, and want to see me succeed. Not only that but it should be apparent that an actual art education could do me some good. But I took down all my facebook stuff asking people to vote and I've stopped asking friends and family, if thats what this is all about.

But if your going to take down all the new account votes you should start from day ONE imo. Not just last night, or the night before. Do it across the board or not at all that my two cents.

And ya personally Fersteger is the one who's work i'd been really admiring since it was posted. Not only can he do digi but you can tell he can also do work by hand, he has a style of his own and each piece is original and compelling. Definitely underrated.

So many great portfolios to pick from, making it a really hard choice.

To name a few of my personal favorites....

algenpfleger - You have some amazing and beautiful rendering skills.

julianV - Your landscapes and technological designs looks fantastic.

Moai - I love the character designs, especailly the alien insectoid ones. Great work.

victorior - Your cartoon characters looks awesome with some beautiful rendering skills to match.

yinteck - Your digital paintings are awesome, I love the design of that giant woolly Rhino Beetle.

fersteger - Fantastic renderings full of vibrant colours, which really make them standout

Argh, I wish I could vote for them all, since you all have portfolios to be proud of, however my vote goes to Moai.

    Best of luck everyone.

Thank you so very, very much, zwarrior, cognition.sb, Fiddzy, and everyone else who has sent a vote my way. I'm friends and fans of a lot of you, and it's an honor to have your vote. My email inbox didn't say anything about any other scholarships this morning, and I believe all of the messages have been sent out, so this is now pretty much my only hope.

Myself, I voted for the extremely talented fersteger, whose vote count is criminally low.

And also, to be very honest, I have posted announcements and vote requests wherever I post my art, including my CA sketchbook, Facebook, and a DeviantArt journal which, after reading the attitudes expressed here, I have since taken down. I viewed doing this as being proactive and really going for what I want, and since it was acceptable to ask for a nomination (which I did), I figured it was acceptable to ask for a vote as well. If you consider that unfair, my apologies. In any case, it doesn't seem like my brazenly asking for votes has dissuaded people from voting for others; I'm only in fourth place.

Edit: Realized that this creates some irony after zwarrior's post. Sorry, zwarrior.

I voted Ostrander because of potential and imagination. SAGIR would have been my second choice. There are a number of artists that I consider almost the finished product and my vote was for someone who still has a lot to learn but is pointing in the right direction.

I voted for Hunchback, right when the poll went up. I think Algen's work is fantastic; had I two votes, my second would have gone to him.

I kind of get the feeling that a lot of people voting aren't really looking at anyone else's work, anyways; just seeing the name they recognize and checking off the box. Though, Algen totally does deserve it; sicknasty dedication and awesome work.

    An early congratulations.

Just FYI some members were talked to in private. Algen and Janischi's comments weren't actually for Algen. Just wanted to make that clear because some people are misconstruing the concern.

Just thought I'd clarify myself here because it seems my stats are a bit off. I didn't join as a new member just to vote on this poll. I have been a member since Dec 2007. I'm not active on the forums, but I have posted before and have participated in the DSGs. I'm not sure why the number of posts I have is only showing 1.

But anyway. There were no set rules about self-promotion though, so I think people just thought they could do it. The title "CA Community Scholarship" does not set rules as to whether or not someone can self-promote outside of CA. It may seem quite obvious, but one person may read it one way, another may read it another. I don't think people should get burnt here for misunderstanding the whole concept of the voting system. So I think in the future there should be set rules in order to clarify these things in order to not get into this debacle again.

Algen gets my vote, don't think any artist has done as much for me as him (unknowingly =P) whether it be Michelangelo, Loomis or Bridgman. So yea... I hope he gets it cause he sooooooo deserves it. =3

Woooooohoooooooooooo! The scholarship recipient list has been released, and fersteger, BRINKMAN!, and I have all been honored with either half-ride or quarter-ride scholarships. Maybe even more of the candidates have won other scholarships, but they released the winners' real names, not their forum names, so I'm not sure.

I'm not sure where that puts us in relationship to this scholarship, but none of us seem to be in the running for the top two spots anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Arshes Nei- I was referring to zWarrior's "whoring" comment. While I don't know if I've been a netwhor e , I've certainly been slightly skanky in my online self promotion.
Farvus- Thanks so much! I can't wait to start learning!

That's fine, it was a bit more than just the "Self promotion" that caught my eye but I really don't want to get into details as to why I asked it be within the community and don't want 0 posters (more specifically newly registered accounts flooding the forums only to vote and vanish).

Congrats, and I think that's what I was trying to stress, many here such as yourself did the work and drive to try for many scholarships, and I believe the folks at CA recognize that and wanted to reward your perseverance.

Arshes- You never did answer my questions as to whether we could apply to things like FAFSA even though this isnt an accredited university we'd be attending. What would it be under the category of? Trade School? Other? Will conventional scholarships even apply?

my 2 cents = vote for someone who will benefit most for the EDUCATION...not someone who is working at or above the professional standard. The whole idea of a scholarships is to grant access to resources that a person would otherwise lack, and simply clicking the name of the popular contestant its a shame and a waste of an opportunity to allow new individuals to blossom.

honestly i would like to see an artist who isnt as developed, but still as dedicated, win this.

Well, I've been following the voting these last days and I can't express my frustration with the lack of correlation between the portfolios quality and the voting stats.
I'd really hate it to come out like I'm bitching for not getting any votes. Putting myself aside and looking at my fellow nominees, I just can't believe that me and such a large part of the voters are looking at the same thing. How is it that fergster and hunchback are trailing by so many votes behind some fellows, whose work, with all sincerity and respect, is really not up to par with theirs. BRINKMAN! here, has received a half ride scholarship, and yet he's not even in the top five here, so I know It's not just me hallucinating. I know we all have different tastes and opinions but it cant be that different. This is fishy.

Guess what, most of the people here, just like you, don't have a "fan base" or are big fish in their own little ponds. It is not ok when people think that they deserve more than others just because they have decided that they are underprivileged. It is fair because all nominees are facing the same conditions.

    That of Concept Art.

I would have thought further interest and exposure to all consumers
of art, would have been a good thing for your community.

Let life take it's chosen course, by changing the rules,
you distort the future. Let Life Decide the votes!

I guess you wouldn't mind then if, say, they'll bring 20 million Chinese (just an example) down to your Australia, right around the elections time, and give them citizenship so they can vote for the "right" candidate? As long as they think they are doing a good thing right? Life's chosen course eh...?

This scholarship is important to everyone who applied here and I'd really hate to see it decided unjustly.

    I feel much better.

On a different note, I think that it is good that many of us feel like we want to vote for the weaker or those who have more to gain from this scholarship. It might sound more humane but in my opinion it is neither fair nor rational.
If guy A is better than guy B, it is quite possible that he worked harder to get to where he is and I won't be the one to decide for him that he's a "finished product" and that he shouldn't get the scholarship - if he signed up for this he's got a good reason and will probably live up to the expectations. If anything, he should be the one rewarded for his hard work. Why reward the weaker one? That guy, B, then, has to keep working hard until he's the one worthy of the reward.

P.S. Great work algenpfleger, you deserve every vote.

Since voting is over, I'm close to closing this thread for comments too, unless people want to be good sports and congratulate winners.

It really shouldn't have been "who looks the part of the better hobo" and I respect everyone's reasons for voting whether it be because you're a friend, or would like to support a "weaker" member, to even that person has a kick ass portfolio.

Really, it's like saying the guy who dressed up for a job interview shouldn't get it because he looks like he didn't need a job next to the guy who dressed kinda slovenly.

So anyways let's at least give respect to the winners and best wishes to those who keep trying for a scholarship or to find a way to attend TAD.
