    More work on the masterstudy.
I still want to add some texture to it tomorrow but then I'll call it done and I'll head on to the next piece because I want to get better at digital painting.

Finished that study a few days ago.

Now I'm into some school stuff again, so sorry if there will be a small lack of updates for the next days.
There is still one study left that I need to do because my goal was to do 3 master studies.

Happy New Year by the way! ^_^

Adore your landscape paintings, you have a great sense of space within them. Great Michael Hampton studies as well, his invention book is awesome!

Bleh, I don't get much done recently.
So much school stuff and I am not feeling that good..

But here's a photostudy I did this evening on my tablet.
Added the bridge and the two figures from imagination to have some fun.

I think you have a great start to your sketchbook and you're very good at digital painting. I'd like to see some more sketches and stuff. And as everyone says, gestures, gestures, gestures. I know, beating a dead horse, right?

I still feel like I do not even know where to begin with digital painting. I've seen some stuff on ctrlpaint, but, I still feel super intimidated. And the tutorials here too... Still feel like I can't do it yet. LOL. I am so weird!

    Best of luck!

    Yemi775 Thanks man!

TristanFletcher Thank you. The references are from different resources. Most of the times just browsing the web and tumblr.

yogeshj25 Thanks! I know, I'll need to push my figurative stuff more again. D:

AdrienneRose Thanks Adrienne! :3 I'll try to do my best. School is keeping me busy lately. :<

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone.
School is keeping me busy and due some personal problems I also didn't get my ass up every day. Gnah.
I'll try to update more often again.

My sketchbooks got merged thanks to BlackSpot!
Due some problems with my old account (Pixelwalker) a few months ago, I created a new one (this one - Nemome) and a new sketchbook. BlackSpot was so nice to merge the two sketchbooks together again, but my accounts still aren't merged (have to wait until an admin has the time to do it).
Sorry if you are / were confused!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sup, back to some serious practice!

Watched the totally awesome livestream of Anthony Jones yesterday and it was mind-blowing!
AJ and the other guys conversation really kicked my ass back on the road.

    Things that punched my mind:
    - fundamentals are still important Nemome. Silly bastard I am... D:
    - values! Just look at values everywhere! Analyze the value range, analyze saturation of colors, ...
    - use your fuck*ng brain when painting
    - network with other artists!

Sup, that are the main things that are stuck in my mind currently.
    Back to work, yihhaaa!

    ------------

    To get this rolling:
A portrait study where I focused a lot on values.

    Notes:
    - Jeeeeez, value range of stin tones can be so short. Brightness was most of the times around ~80%. +-10%. There are only small parts in the shadow of the skin that really go into some dark grey. Made me realize how much I sucked before with values!

    Thanks for stopping by!

Great work on these values here!
I she meant to be 3D? Cause of the blue and red around there it seems so.

I like your photo-studies. You pick pretty photos and do them pretty

Confused? Please look at the top of the page.

Chompi'n Thank you! People tell me that there is a 3D effect if you're wearing glasses, but I didn't had it in mind. I just wanted to play a bit around that it doesn't look that boring anymore and I have to admit that I kinda like this effect.

    --------------------------------------

    One more value study.
It's after Casper David Friedrich. Awesome painter and his control of values is also great.
Gnah, it's so aweful to see how important values are, especially because I never took care of them before.

great looking thread, you've showed tons of improvement, have a quick note about using photo textures though. when you lay them into an image you still have to go back in and work with them to make them fit the image, depending on the material used you have to adjust your speculars and generally make the lighting and amount of detail believable. I've attached a quick example with your post from yesterday to kind of show what I'm talking about.

invinciblewombat Thank you. It was actually a study to understand how masking in photoshop works, but your example still shows what I could have improvement of the general image in a few minutes D: Sometimes I should just stop to hurry from painting to painting. So yup, thanks for pointing out man!

    ------------------------

    One more value study..
Fucked this one up because the value of the background ruins everything I think.
The portrait before just looked way cleaner and "understandable".
Can someone point out what makes the first portrait look better than this one? ._.

    Thanks!

Edit: Just joined this month's sketchbook challange by Wojtek Fus, so there's also an crappy sketchbook paaaaaaaaage! Fuck proportions...

Thanks for dropping by my SB! I'll be doing more and more imaginative work, but at the moment I feel like really understanding light and color a bit more than I do now. Trying to save myself the frustration for future attempts whilst painting imaginatively, ha. And I was trying to be conscious about the lineweight for my IDW entry, but it looks like I should push it a little further than I did. Thanks for the crit!

Not sure if you know the term (excuse me if I'm being redundant in that case) but the red/green/blue tinting that you put around your portraits in the last couple of posts is called chromatic aberration. It's is a pretty neat effect (Anthony Jones uses it quite a bit in his own work) and it has a neat way of making a painting look more like a photograph, albeit one that hasn't been corrected or taken "properly". I've been interested in a good way of recreating this myself, so I'll ask - how did you go about doing it?

Looking through your SB, it's great to see all the construction studies, especially when dealing with anatomy. Your value studies are okay at the moment, but just be sure to always be mindful of your contrast between your lights and shadows and stick to using whites only for pure specular highlights and your blacks only for extreme occlusions; everything else will be varying forms of greys. I'm working at this at the moment, going back to simple geometric forms and rendering those in different lighting situations. Then I'll move onto combining these in various shapes and lighting those, getting more and more complex and organic as I go.

Anyway, I've rambled enough. Keep up the good work and I'll be back to check out your progress!

    MrFrenik Thanks!
For the effect: Duplicate your image and then go into the layer options of the duplicated layer. There you disable the red channel and you're already nearly done. Now you only need to move the duplicated a few pixels left or right and the effect appears. You can adjust how strong it is by adjusting the difference between the position of the two layers. It's pretty much self explaining once you did it.
I hope you could understand my weird mini tutorial

    ---------------------------------------

    Stuff from today.
Simplified some environments and focused again on the values.
Still learned some stuff but I should move on to some stuff from imaginatio now.

Grrr, my cold was killing me today so I spend most of the day lying around and watching some livestreams, tutorials and stuff like that.
But at least I did my a quick sketchbook page for this month's challange.
It's a quick landscape from imagination. I tried to redraw the study from yesterday as you can probably see.

I would have loved to push the rendering more, but perhaps I'll do that still in the future.

Painted this study (a friend was doing it and then I wanted to try it out by myself) after reference and also drew my sketchbook page.
Turned out shitty because I was working too fast and bLSfjhioadhfis!
