Round #166 STINKY SWAMP DEVIL

#166 STINKY SWAMP DEVIL

So, as a rule here in COW, when the round number ends in "66" we are required by law to have another round that praises the dark lord of the underworld, Satan! (Well, okay... there's no such rule. But for round #66 we did a Hell Beast, so why not make it a rule?) My god. It just dawned on me that I have been around in some capacity for over a hundred rounds. I's an old, old man. Well, anyway, I'm not going to give you a bunch of stipulations and guidance this round with a big long art brief. Just take it where you want to take it. STINKY SWAMP DEVIL!

I'll give this a shot. My first C.O.W (my first week here, really). I'm pretty excited to see what people come up with.

Ok, here's my first idea, kind of amphibious and a real creature, not a demon. A foul critter that loves to bathe in his own stench, literally. It can forcefully expel toxic gasses into its surroundings leaving a perimeter of death from which to feed on. The ears or horns are neither, but tubes that emit an airborne toxin, lethal enough to kill most anything that may be above it. Although not extremely clever it does have a nasty attitude and will sneak into an area of opportunity and then quickly unleash his noxious fury. A boiling of bubbles is the first and last warning of his surfacing. By the time you see his angry face and burning throat is is too late (unless you are far away).

Symmetrical study for design purpose.

Okay, after some thumbnailing etc. I came up with this little concept. So here's my first WIP shot. I liked the idea of having its horns being shaped from gas exuding from it's head (hence it's smelly nature).

It doesn't look too devilish or i guess even stinky yet, but it will

Here's where I'm at. I'm thinking of having him (her?) caught in the beam of a flashlight. My biggest concern right now is where the mini-arms attach to the body: I can see that getting a bit dicey.


Oh yeah, the stinkiness comes from those volcano-looking things on his back, dripping out nasty fluids and whatnot.

Threw some color on this bad boy and I realize that I think I used all of the crayons in the box. LOL. Played around with many different combinations and kept coming here. This was not my intended composition either but now I'm starting to like the way he is glaring dead ahead. If I stick with this I will add more bleed top and bottom. I'll look at it again tomorrow.

This what I got so far, anatomy of the left arm is crap but might leave it since erasing the graphite would leave terrible marks I might not will be able to do something with. Also ran out of paper so he might have to do without parts of his right leg

So, looking over my first sketch, I was worried that it was treading a bit too close to the "no humanoids" rule, as well as looking, well, sort of generic.

So I went in a totally different direction:

Sardeanie - I like the toxic colours you're using. Really makes it feel like this thing has lambent (possibly radioactive) qualities. It reminds me, in design, of the Goblins in the animated version of The Hobbit from the 70s.
GDolaldson - Sweet, man! I love the smirk it has. It looks like the swamp itself is glowing. Really fecal demon type of stuff.
Ironhead - Really nice sketch. I like the look as if it's almost embarrassed at how stinky it is.
IceCold - Cool thumbs, I like I, II and VI the most.

I've worked a bit more on mine, added some oranges and yellows and made the gas cloud horns look a bit more sulfuric.

So this is WIP so far. I have to be honest i don't like so far what people are doing. While there is slight variable they are all about the same. so i am doing something completely differnt.

"The Stinky Swamp devil as Locals dubbed it, is a Dangerous Super Predator. It rolls around in the dank and putrid foliage of the swamp to disguise its scent as it hunts. This Reptile is incredibly Intelligent and has a Voracious Appetite. They are social creatures much like Canines and have been noted to give birth to live young, much like some snakes."

thanks for the comments people, si swe try changeing the levels on your picture or using some stronger colours on focal points its all a bit desaturated and the legs look a bit like dragon limbs?

I think Im just about done 4 hrs or so and I just overwrote the a4 size one with this one DOH!
