My name is Ian, I'm a web designer involved in a startup development company in Waterloo, Canada. I'm stronger at graphic design than illustration and concept art, and i have to admit to never using a tablet.



These are submissions to the daily sketch group, from 2008

this was inspired by the overhead crane I use at work, it was also my first post.

Since my car broke down and I've been using public transport, I get to sketch on the bus. I did this on the way home today.

So todays bus ride home, gave me time to do some prep sketches for the current DSG.
My productivity is likely going to drop huge once I get my new vehicle on the road.

Purplegoat has inspired me to post some recent studies, I find it a bit laborious to gather and scan all the little sketches I do, because I dont really keep a sketchbook, instead I accumulate boxes of loose printer paper that I've scrawled and written all over.

I did these sketches at the bus station from the window while waiting for the bus to move, i tried to capture peoples outlines as quickly as possible

I didnt think I'd enjoy this DSG, to depict a small insect flitting about an alien creatures nose, but I had fun with it.

got some wierd but very cool stuff going on here, i like it the facial expression in your last drawing looks really good. Keep doing some studies along with your imaginative work

The face studies definitely helped with the last piece, and yes there is a marked difference between my work from reference and my imaginative stuff, hopefully I can teach myself to bridge the gap with more studies. I really need to do more on fabrics and folds in cloth.

Hi! Im new here and I have not upload any work yet, but I try to help. You have great concepts and ideas, but certainly you have to work a little bit more with anatomy and blender. If I can give you an advice, try to forget the filters, they make your illustration veri artificial, try to do the same painting.

I tend not to paint, because I dont own a tablet and I just make a mess with traditional media. As a web designer, I tend to use filters for web graphics and GUIs like the "Vision" interface or the 3Kad logo, they're not intended for print but rather webgames and such. I included them in the sb anyway to give an impression of what I do. The stained glass piece was student work that was actually meant to be an exercise in studying photoshops filters, I wasnt sure if I should include it.

I agree however, the filters are poor compensation for good painting.

Did you think of shading it or digitally rendering it? Not saying it needs it, just would be curious to see it if you did!
