and here's a WIP on one of the lines that i posted earlier

Suweeet! New lines, lots of new lines!
    - - - - - -
@Zoeli: Cool, I like the flame and the light coming off of it. What are you using, photoshop? You going to pick this one back up later?
@Dose206: That girl is hard to do huh?! Just keep with it, do it again later like I'm gunna too. What's with the white bars? Couldn't get rid of them?! Huh? The colors on your own lines are coming along pretty good too, you tired of them yet though? looks tedious hehe. If your bored your probably not learning so I'd recommend trying something else for awhile if that happens.
@Seth1: Crazy colors, I like it, a bit dark though no? It looks like you used a multiply layer or something over the lines right? You might try another layer on top of that for some details, just normal mode though.
@Mull77: Really sweet colors dood, the red and yellow works great, I never would have thought to do that. His head seems a little concave in the back though, maybe add some of that purple backlighting to the back of his crome dome? Thanks for lines by the way!
@Sone_One: OoO, neato! I can tell these will be fun! Hey, shouldn't she have another set of pec's/breasts though? Otherwise those arms can only move up and down no?
    - - - - - - - - - -
Scribbled on this while chatting on CA.org's IRC, kind of a wierd experiment and add the disjointedness of chatting then painting back and forth... anyways, I think it came out kinda good!

    Thanks for the lines Jonny.

Dose206: What were you using to colour the young lady? Open canvas leaves white bars when you're cropping, unless you make sure you have the lines of the area to be cropped exactly where you want the image to be cropped. It looks like here you were trying to crop the top and bottom and keep the width the same, so ignored the sides. Open canvas can be weird like that, and it's a pain, because you can't confirm before you crop. But that's enough rambling. >_>
It sounds like you got a bit frustrated with that picture, maybe one of the things you should work on is a variation of skin tones, it looks a little like you just used 3 colours in the skin. In skin you can find all kinds of colours. She's all wrapped up in a coat and a scarf, so maybe she's cold and would have rosy cheeks?
The send image looks like it's going well.

mull77: I like this, especially the orange in transition from the flesh tones to the purple. I also like the red and yellow.

seth1: Very cool in a creepy sort of way. The colours work well to give it a gritty/macabre look. Some of the details seem kinda lost though.

Idiot Apathy: Looking good. It's difficult to see what's going on around the neck area. Yeah, I was using photoshop for my last post. I'm more likely to start all over than carry on with it. The background just isn't working, and I was floundering around for too long trying to figure out whether I was going to go stylised, realistic or something inbetween. I think the metallic parts need more contrast too.

    Anyways...

first time I've ever tried this style. I'm liking it.

@Zoeli: Ah thanks, the neck, I overlooked that. Now then, your latest! Woooweee, I love it, I'm super jealous . Really great style and vibrant colors, you should definetly explore this further! Only thing to nitpick at is the highlights in the hair, they don't seem to fit in with the extremely warm atmosphere you have going on. Maybe try warmer highlights? Probably just more intensity since I noticed you changed the hue. Anyways, cheers!

Thanks for the lines EvilDisco; this turned out to be a lot of fun!

All in all, pretty happy I think. I didn't finish several parts though .

Pff couldn't connect up until now, anyhoo.
Really nice Apathy, though some darker values would make it better. The color palette is kickass though and considering the poor cleanup that pic had it seems to work pretty well.

Woow, lots of coloring and lots of linearts!

Great colors again by you, Idiot Apathy. Really like the samurai and that last one (the girl standing in front of a door). Do you ever stop?

Zoeli > your interpretation of the girl is really great. The combination between the soft coloring of the face and the hair, and the more stylized colors of the scarf and stuff, is really neat, I like it

I actually like about every piece on this page, so I'll just tell you guys that

I finally got some time to color something else again. This took me quite some hours to do, and it's really not finished yet! The hair's still being sketched and the skin needs touchups... But I do like it so far, so that's why I post...

Ok, tried to inject some warmer highlights into the hair, also I made the eyes smaller with the liquify tool, to make it more like the lineart.

Idiot Apathy: That's all kinds of awesome! I especially like the colouring on the bodysuit/armour, and the left hand. The only thing that bothers me is that the sides of the cut in bit that she's standing in looks prcatically ignored, but you did say parts are unfinished.

ogar555: Welcome! No need for me to be gentle, I really like your take on these lines. There's a really good sense of form here, and I like the lights on and around her feet. Maybe the smoke from the gun should be less opaque though?

Sirithduriel: Thanks. Yours is looking good so far. I like the shading on the nose especially, can't wait to see it finished.

@ogar555: Nice! I like the darker atmosphere in yours a bit better. The intense orange with the sharp blue accents looks really great! I think the hair is the only thing I don't like. It's a wierd ... dull red-violet that turns to white. Is she one of those grandma's who dyes their hair odd colors? Anyways, Welcome to the thread, don't be a stranger!
@evildisco: Thank you! What did you mean by it could use some darker colors? Do you mean overall like Ogars? Or just in specific places? Now that we've got you in here your not allowed to leave! I want to see your colors and eagerly await new lines . Cheers!
@Sirithduriel : Thanks ! And to answer your question, Yeah... I wish I never had to stop though. On your pic: I'm really liking this! Coming along great. The mouth and nose area are especially well done. I would caution however going so high key. You've washed out some of the highlights and have gone almost to pure white. I'd usually recommend using more intense/saturated colors and with that comes a little less value. I don't like to use white for highlights very often either; it's too extreme. You might try starting up with a more saturated and darker background to help you visualize things better. All this being said, you can use high key to your advantage; don't ask me how though, I'm still experimenting . Also with hair, make sure it will follow the shape of the skull. right now it seems a little big to me in places but maybe she just uses a lot of hairspray? Anyways, keep on truckin!
@Zoeli: Mighty jealous still... She doesn't look quite as alert as the first version you posted, it's the eyes. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, depends on what you want. Can't wait to see your next stuff!
    - - - - - -
Actually started this one several nights ago, I think when I did evildisco's actually. I was surprised when I had done the body in about 30 minutes and figured I'd have the steam to polish this puppy. But noooo, The snake body was soooo hard to figure out. I eventually settled upon this but I'm not that satisfied. By the time I got that done I was pooped, didn't finish they hands etc. Not too happy with the cramped composition either, plus she seems a little too short even if she has a lower body of a snake. o'well... Definetly going to revisit these lines.

Say whatever comes to mind! I love to hear it all!

I said I would be back

    probably 2 hours of work...

so where do I start with comments? Sorry if I missed a few.
mull77: Nice colouring and lineart. The anatomy isn't completly right though. Her upper body is a little bit too long compared to her head.

    JonnyAwesome: Great and creepy sketches!

seth1: Maybe a bit dark? Try to not use 100% black as background colour. Some times it can be nice with some small barely visible details in the blackness.

Zoeli: No offense to everyone else, but that is the best colouring so far of the lines I posted. How long time did you spend?

    evildisco: Post more lines! =)

Idiot Apathy: Erm...All of them are nice. I would have to write lots if I had to comment each one

ogar555: Nice first post! Please come back =)

Sirithduriel: That is looking very nice. Nice warm and soft colours. However, even if it's more attractive with small nostrils, hers are maybe a bit too small or angled the wrong way. The right eye could need some more work as well. The hair could be made more realistic as well, but I'm not the right person to say anythi8ng about that because I can definitely not paint hair myself.
OMG! INVISIBLE TEXT! ... and a future sketchbook will maybe be linked soon.

@Discord: S'nice! Pretty good sense of form, really like the hair. Breasts seem... well disconnected. Almost like say a softball under a blanket. Blending the highlights into the pec's a bit more would help a lot as well as showing some reflected lighting on the undersides. It probably wouldn't be the orange light though, a dull blue perhaps? Now then, where the hell you been? You've got some catching up to do
@invinciblewombat : A good start, try to watch your values on the robot. The black parts just fade away. Maybe add some careful highlights and reflected lighting to show it off more. Watch the very blue buildings too, their windows would be a semi-close reflection to the sky which doesn't match up with them right now. Welcome to the Forums and the Thread, don't be a stranger and keep up the hard work!
    - - - - - - - -
I pull these lines out from time to time to scribble out some quick idea's I want to experiment with; they just seem to flow and become a good aid to the experiment. Every now and then I take it a bit further, felt like posting this one.

This time I wanted to keep a limited value range, pretty high key except for the hair and the lines. I wanted to see how much depth could be achieved with just a few value and intensity changes thus relying mainly on hue changes. Still trying to figure out the whole color as value thing.

    Almost an hour I think.
I'd love to hear whatever comes to mind!

    Zoeli > Thanks! .
I like the refining you did, though the sketchyness the first had is a bit gone..

Idiot Apathy > Thanks for the comments. I'll try adding some more intense colors, see how it works out.
Like your try on the snake-woman, great shading. I like the upper body best, though her breasts aren't really similar... Her (to us) right breast looks a lot firmer than the left breast, which kinda unevens the body (best english ever ).
I like that last coloring you posted very much! Really nice and bright colors! (averts eyes for brightness overdose ) Anyway, maybe the BG behind her head is a little bit too bright (though that might be just me), but overall I think your little experiment is a success.

Dischord > Thanks for the comments, I'll look into the few things you noticed. The hair wasn't finished, but I'm pretty sure it'll look better next time .
Nice colors on that one, she looks really otherworldy. Would like to see a bit of the tail, what kind of texture you'd use there

Invinciblewombat > Welcome to the fora! I really like the colors you used, nicely toned down. I do agree with Idiot Apathy, the seperate buildings don't really cooperate with their environment. I do like the style of coloring. And do come back

Well, hopefully I'll have some time to color this week, we'll see how I come along with the girl .

I really don't like this one. This guy ended up looking scary and I've definately over-smoothed it. I've been mostly working in photoshop recently, and neglecting painter, so I'm trying to get back into it. These are both painter, as well as my previous colour-job.

After seeing Idiot Apathy and dischord's take on these lines I'm almost ashamed to post my version. It's hard to keep up to the high standards in here recently. I was experimenting with getting a more textured look using the grain fuction of some of painters brushes, but I don't think I utillised it very well here.

Idiot Apathy: Yeah, I agree about the eyes, I prefer the first version too. I like your snake woman, especially her expression, it's like she's looking at me thinking: "Insignificant worm!" I can definately see contempt there. The snake body is kinda difficult to figure ou, isn't it. To me it kinda looks like she might topple forwards. I think maybe the bottom of the tail section she's stood up on is a little thin. Also maybe it should be more curved, with the bottom towards the front, and her hips/top section of the tail a lttile further back, if you see what I mean. As for your second image, I'm very impressed! I really like that bright, fresh look. It's really different from a lot of work I've seen from you. Definately something you should experiment with more. So two awesome pictures in a row from you.

dischord: Thanks so much ^_^. I don't really remember how long I spent on it, maybe half an hour, maybe an hour, I really couldn't say. I can tell you that I spent a lot more time polishing it than I do most stuff I post here. The forums were down when I was about to post it here, so I went back and smoothed out my shading and tightened things up, and I think it really helped.
I am very impressed my your snake woman. I love the hair, the scales and the fire. Some really beautiful deatails you have there. The orange light on the shoulders doesn't look quite right to me, I'm not sure why though. I hope now you're back you'll stay back.

invinciblewombat: Looking pretty good, I'm liking the colours of the robot, and the helicopters are cool too. I think the colours you've chosen on the whole work well to create a good atmosphere. I agree pretty much with Idiot Apathy. You have to remember that the scene is a whole, and the different objects in it will affect one another in terms of reflections, shadows etc.

Dave_Lynch: One word: Hilarious. Might have to give that one a shot.

@everybody who crited: I added the sky as an afterthought really so the tone of the buildings was bothering me too, same with the unity, the foreground sticks out too much. thanks for the pointers though.

invinciblewombat: I like it and I agree with what everyone else said about it.

Idiot Apathy: I told you, I was in England. Obviously I have uni stuff to catch up on first before I can do lots of these every day. That's a great sketch to practice on. THe one who made it should be proud. Once again you are doing a great job colouring it!

Sirithduriel: Thank you. The reason I'm not doig the scales is because I've failed miserably every time I've tried. I would need some recommendations how to paint them before I give it a try.

Zoeli: No need to be ashamed of yours. The lighting on the upper body is FAR superiour to mine

evildisco: Nice lighting. Better than mine

This one took 30-60 minutes and turned out a bit better than last time I tried colouring this.

@Sirithduriel: Thanks, good eye! Now then your overdue for a posting
@Zoeli : First off thanks, keep egging me on; I need it . Like you said first one is a little smooth, I'm trying to stay away from blenders almost completely or maybe just a little bit at the end. I think the main thing on this is his eyebrows have joined with his hair right? Not sure why your ashamed to post the second one, it looks great! I like your solution to the missing hands hehe. Careful with textures, make sure they aren't so powerful/contrasty that they attract they eye (unless that's what you want), but I like how they look on the scales.
@invinciblewombat : So fix it or post something else hehe.
@evildisco : Nice! I really like the face, it just pops out especially with the hard shadow edge from the hair. But in some other places the hard edges don't seem to fit in. I think hard edges on shadows are caused by something close blocking the lightsource; but say if it's just hidden from the sun it should have a softer transition. Nice controled palette too! The right leg bugs a little though, it seems a bit flat or even concave where you have the purple shadows. Second One: Isn't it cool how different everyone's takes on these lines are? I think your the first one to make her look sad though. I'm liking the yellowish highlights on her nose and cheek but why is the one on the forehead a much cooler white? I think that area might be covered up by her hair too? Anyways, keep posting! Good stuff.
@dischord : Nicccce! One of your best I think! Man these are great lines, I want to color them again everytime someone else does... How was England?
@Kanji2000 : Yeah color, seriously take a look at my first posts in this thread. Just keep at it, think about why something doesn't look right instead of jumping in and trying to fix it. It's all about baby steps my friend.
@DieOxin : Thanks dude, remember offer still stands; you need some help with painter just PM. Now where the hell are your colors and lines?! You've been slacking ya bum!

Ho man, that's a lot of replies. Thread is getting busy, makes me happy . Once again I only reply so much because I think everyone deserves some feedback on their hardwork, I hope I don't come across as a pompous know-it-all ... cause I don't know much.

evildisco: seriously; never leave! These are some awesome lines too.

    YARRRRRRRR!

I fudged up a few parts but I'm pretty happy with what I've learned out of this, spent over 2 hours (probably like 3!) on this one between some Thanksgiving prep yesterday (forums been down awhile...). Couldn't get the (steering wheel?) to work so I nixed it... hehe, sowee.
