So, after stumbling through a couple other sketchbooks and finding very inspirational words of wisdom I decided it's time to start fresh. I realized a lot of my own faults and recognized that I was stuck in a comfort zone, so it's time to start making shit happen. I have goals and i WILL reach them. critiques always welcome [:

was starting to get faster at the gestures and alllmost finish them in 90 sec..soooon i willsies. more studies and practice, should be obvious which is which..Hmm need to make the images smaller and side by side they take up a lot of room....next time.

Anatomy studies are a good way to start. Keep doing them and draw from life too!

@Eddie, your right, so, here's some life drawing from the figure session on saturday. Really tried to focus on using my edges and learned a lot. Hopefully i can apply that to my imagination stuff when i get my form down.

Here's some gestures and blind contours, er blind straight lines haha. Leg studies cuase I SUCK at them. studies from bridgman and peck, and then some imagination stuff. the dude with the weapons and the dead chick took me forever to do. NEED TO STUDY MORE, pay more attention to my poses from gestures. I'm gonna start just taking pictures of my studies cuase its wayyy faster than scanning everthing. ill scan my imagination stuff.

Really nice anatomy studies. I like the cleanness of the lines. Maybe think about letting your gestures be a bit looser? They seemed more like construction then feeling the flow of the pose. Keep at it.

@swampdigger, thanks. yeah i was basically doing block in practice. heres some more loose stuff and studies from the last couple days. tried to do some stuff from my head last night and nothing came out right blagh, i need to do some more life drawing. didnt get much done today, had a fight with my girlfriend. but i cant do nothing so i figured i could at least update. in order, gestures in charcoal that suck, studies in pencil, and last page imagination in pen.

Lovin' the studies! Every time you lay pencil/pen to paper, you're progressing. No matter what you draw! More you observe/study, you learn faster because your mind trains your hand more and more into becoming an expert. Keep up the good work! :]

Hey guys long time no update. WELL.....I've been in the process of removing myself from caffiene and changing my sleep schedule which my body is not happy with at all but it must be done. Here's what I've been up to. Bargue 2 is done as approved by Sir Jonathan. This one definitely taught me that I can trust my eye now, every measurement I checked I was right. All the simple figure studies are copies from the Bargue drawing course book. I have a massive amount of respect for that guy after doing this figures, his achievement in simplification is amazing while still having proportion, accuracy, grace, and character. Mine are done in pencil, his were in charcoal which makes them even more win. The other figure stuff is from figure sessions. The chick with the rendered legs sadly moved so I couldn't finish that one. Working on the one right now with the sword. It's just a wooden practice sword and shes wearing an authentic silk robe from Japan that her brother bought her. I tried the Bargue approach with the outline of the figure which is done in charcoal but I know now my stick needs to be MUCH sharper or it doesn't work. It's a 10 day pose but i'll probly only get in maybe 4 or 5 days becuase of work. The next image is a photo study and the last 2 pages are from my sketchbook(imagination, no ref)I also started another bargue on top of my 3rd assignment for more practice, watch out! see ya guys soon.

the bargue studies,both cast and figure, are going really well. keep that shit up, as u were saying simplification is the KEY. that's what its all about, your figure studies are also bearing some weight and gesture which is great. re: chick w/ rendered legs, id suggest a more general approach to the subject next time. as far as i know, all ateliers put a lot of emphasis on resolving an accurate shadow shape early on in the drawing. youve gone into a wide range of midtones on the torso and leg without even indicating the shadows on the face. even if u change them later its good practise to at least indicate some of the features with shadows.

i can see in one of ur sketches that you're already blocking in the shadow shape, just remember that shape is the foundation of ur light effect. see how much form bargue conveyed without really even using midtones

its just a light side, a dark side, and a play of sharp/soft edges between them.

as for the imagination drawing, that stuff really just gets better with mileage. one thing i would recommend is to practise developing gesture and rhythm, u tend to build a lot of ur shapes using straight lines and its nice to have a balance between organic and inorganic forms. plus drawing flowy lines is so fun

@Sleep, thanks for the critique! That's what I like to hear instead of the same old "Keep it up!". I definitely agree with the comment about the legs. I was new to charcoal and trying to get a feel for it. I put the two together shortly after those studies, they were older even when I had posted them. That's the downside of an online atelier, no in person figure drawing but now I'm making the correlations that were right in front of my face. I definitely would like to do more imagination stuff but all my time goes to my studies and work I'll update soon!

Killing it, absolutely slaying it. Grrreat exercises and great progress. I like the Bargue poses and the shaidng and planes on the imaginary stuff. Remember to draw short observational studies from life a lot as well and random objects! Look for those planes. Great stuff!
