Mangoshell's Senior Year sketchbook! Warning: some nudity

Hi, my name is Michelle, and I'm an alcoholi-- just kidding hahahahah hmmm...

My name's Michelle, I turned 17 this month, and I'm going into my senior year of high school! School starts in..what, 2 or 3 days now and I decided to make a sketchbook here to see my progress over the course of the year. Plus I'm doing IB art yayy! Anyway, I'm kinda new here and I'm hoping to gain some sage knowledge from you knowledgeable and sage people on these boards. Therefore critiques are very very welcome!

Soo I finally got around to posting sketches. These are things from my school sketchbook that I've done over the summer up to this week. Don't mind the sticky notes, my teacher put them there. First batch!!!:

Hey, you seem to have a nice grasp on perspective (though how that car is foreshortened looks looks a bit toy-like). I like your figure drawings though and your angles are really dynamic.

ahh, does it? yeah I did everything on that by observation outside. except the building with the columns and the car. Which is why they look pretty awkward. thanks!

Wow! Your sketches are really great. I love the one of the middle aged man writing at his desk. i hope you keep posting. I can't wait to see more.

You give your portraits, people, characters and even cities a lot of personality.

Here are some figure drawing practices I did the other day. Unfortunately they're referenced from photographs.

The last one is my favorite!

wwaaahhh, awesome figures!! i just started doing some. love it.
ps, i'm very, very jealous... of your IB art teacher. my teacher gives us ZERO feedback, no comments or suggestions. but then again, who the hell had the wonderful idea of putting a PHOTO teacher in charge of 20+ drawers and painters?

    anyways, I love your work.

I like your cartoons! I also like that spiderman drawing. Is that without a ref?

I also like your last life drawing of that girl. I would agree that its probably the best one out of the last update.

    Anyways keep up the studies!!!
My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills

I love your stuff! Your figures make my jaw drop. I love that one of the woman with the orange and blue. So great. And I agree with what was said before--your characters have so much neat personality. Do you know what major you want to pursue at Ringling/wherever else you're applying?

Absolutely loving it, you're making me nervous to apply to CA! X(. But its definitely beautiful work, and from what I've heard visiting you shouldn't have much trouble.

ehh uploading is such a pain. I decided not to use any of the previous pieces for my portfolio.
The ones I'm not gonna use are the first two watercolors and the 5th figure. All were drawn from life.

Really nice stuff mangoshell! I would consider including some of your perspective and environment drawings, if there's space (I forget Ringling's portfolio requirements). I think the park bench in post #2 and the down shot of the building in #3 (with some cleaning up, get rid of the sketchbook spine, the sketches, and the post-it note) are really nice. I'm not so sure of the eighth figure in your portfolio (the lady in blue with the red background) - her torso looks a little too short. The one under it is better.

All personal opinion though. I think your portfolio's shaping up nicely!

    Thanks for your comments!

nilaffle:YES I was debating whether or not I should keep the park bench one. The one thing that bothers me about it is the car and the blank space in the front. But I think I'll use that, and leave out some figures. Perspective pieces are one of my top priorities right now.

    Thanks nikkatzu and gabs!

Well the one of the lady laying down was a 40 minute pose. I finished the figure first and went home to add the yellow background and the blue blanket, and to add some detail to the figure.

The one(s) of the lady sitting/kneeling was a 2 hour session with the same pose, so I got to make two drawings with different angles.
