how could anyone not be with coco?
i'm for him coming back to new york too!
Yeah I saw this at Mike's then EVERYWHERE, news stories people using it as avatars. Good for Mike , and of coarse I'm with COCO.
COCO? How did that get started?
O captain my captain.
Since when was Conan called "Coco"? lol
Anyway, boo NBC for that move. Good luck to Conan....Now back to more serious matters.
That's a cool picture, my compliments to the artist.
Conan seems like a charismatic and decent fellow, same goes for Leno. But they are both far too rich for me to bother supporting them in obvious corporate politics and contract haggling.
The fact that people would see this as a worthy cause to donate their time too is just a bit silly at best, and horrifying at worst.
Pssst... I has sketchbook
your post was horrifying at worst.
"All I ask is one thing, and I'm asking this particularly of young people that watch. Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record. It's my least favorite quality. It doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life get's exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."
The reason people bother with all of this isn't because there aren't better causes in which they could donate their time. It's because food, shelter and clothing aren't the only things that help people. Yes we all need those things more than anything else but we also need hope. We need inspiration and we need to laugh.
Conan is, admittedly, a lucky guy and he doesn't deny it in the least. But he has the spirit. He's one of the good guys. There are a lot of troubled people in show business who, like most normal people. tend to fall victim to negativity and inadvertently become assholes. In the face of all the shit that happened Conan kept a smile on his face, he kept doing his job and he went out without one ounce of hate for the people who caused this to happen. He kept his cool while remaining classy until the end. In the last minutes of his last show he summarized his career at NBC in that one quote. Everything he stood for as a writer, comedian and entertainer.
I don't see how anyone doesn't understand fans being disappointed that a man like Conan is being booted out of a place he earned. Nobody who supported Coco was doing it for the corporate politics, they were supporting someone they admired and cared about. Helping a stranger who made them laugh. It was simply emotional support. No matter how much is in your bank account or what your job is, sometimes you need help. If you can't find worth in helping out a fellow man despite his position in life, then you're just cynical.
"Astronomy offers an aesthetic indulgence not duplicated in any other field. This is not an academic or hypothetical attraction and should require no apologies, for the beauty to be found in the skies has been universally appreciated for unrecorded centuries."
Being in Finland, Coco's ultimate European fanbase, it's hard not to like him.
But I couldn't tell you exactly why, back in his Late Night days, half the guests he had were mysteries to me, yet he was just fun to watch either way.
Eh I knew Conan wasn't behind the CoCo branding and didn't like it either lol On last night epi Tom Hanks said he was the one responsible for the name.

People usually turn cynical when they fail at life, so ofcourse it doesn't lead anywhere, however neither did life.. I feel the only reason Conan adressed cynisism is because he must be quite disillusioned with NBC, despite being gratefull and having no regrets. (you actually need to know what you've done wrong to regret it)
I'm not worried about his career, i'm sure we'll see him again, it just sucks it's not gonna be the same routine at midnight anymore.
P.S. That picture is awesome... In fact, he should be painted traditionally, so he can be framed next to the Kramer painting.
Actually, if CoCo did a show in a 7-11 parking lot, I'd watch that. Rich famous dude stuck in the middle of a middle-class environment. That'd be sweet.
And being cynical isn't a bad thing. It's horrible though, when it becomes disabling. Looking at things realistically is perfectly sane.

Yeah, sorry if my unbridled cynicism tainted my logic.
...It seems I'm missing something here. If it wasn't about money, what was it about?
If Conan offered to work for free, would NBC have accepted? because that's what your implying.
I admit, i jumped to the conclusion that money was the prime motivator for this 'bru ha ha', but only due to the absence of any other probable alternatives.
Can someone please explain wtf this is all really about?
Pssst... I has sketchbook
I'm sure money is no motivator for you at all right? If you were offered to do art for millions of dollars i'm sure you wouldn't do it right? See now i actually read and inform myself about such things and don't spout out garbage, and if you read you would know that during the writers strike Conan payed about 80 people there salaries. Also the money he got recently is going to help all the people the worked for him until they can get a new job, or what have you. I don't think most rich people would even care to do such things.
It's easy to sit at your computer and pretend that you would be different, but put in the same situation i'm sure you would want to be paid for the amount your contract stated you would. Your just as pathetic as the rest of the humans on this earth. SO STOP PRETENDING.

But I guess Conan deserves some support too...

I'm afraid i'm going to have to ask you to be more specific. Who here is pretending?
Or maybe i should abandon logical reasoning, and communicate purely through expressions of my emotion, because you all seem to think a logical process represents the opposite of art.

BuckWeisel, I completely agree with you.
And, I would like to add that as a longtime fan of Conan, I'm personally surprised that this thread is attracting such negativity. I would support Conan in whatever choices he decides to make, and certainly it was his own choice to not accept being pushed back to the later time slot on NBC, knowing full well what the consequences of that might be.
But the guy is essentially jobless now, and though he probably has made more money that most of us could ever hope to make in our lifetimes, he has lost, what for him, was probably a very enjoyable and fun filled job. I think it's pretty admirable that he's retained his positive outlook and really decided to go out with a bang.
Coco, I'll be watching and looking forward to seeing where you go next.

Gee, I was not aware that my support for Conan was really support for the rich corporate jackoffs. How narrow minded of me!
But seriously, this isn't about money. Well at least it wasn't for the fans and Conan himself. Conan simply didn't want to move the well known franchise of The Tonight Show into a later time slot because he felt it cheapened the legacy.
Of course, if you're a cynic, you might want to choose to believe Conan was doing it for the money and not for the principle of the thing. But then again, quitting the show will actually lose him money in the long run.
I really don't understand the animosity shown here either. I guess the lecture on cynicism was well deserved.
Woah, the wood elves here are hardcore about their forest being potty mouth free. I don't see why such silly censoring seeing as visual people we can come up with way sicker concepts than the f word.
