    Dana's Sketch Book, Updated 2-29-2045

I haven't kept a CA sketchbook for a little while now, but really want to get back into it again. I really need to continual feedback. So here we go..

The first two are studies done from photo reference, credit to the original photographer. And the third image is a WIP shot of some weapon designs I a trying to finish up. Love to hear any thoughts you guys might have, otherwise I will be posting again soon. Thanks for looking.

hi! judging from your studies, your brushwork and colours are sweet. i dont know anything about weapons so that might be hard for me to crit. but to me they look solid

I think the first painting could do with a little more contrast (I'm still lacking proper terminology), but the second one is simply stunning.

hey there, like the 1st environment and the weapon design looks good, composition wise though, you could move the mountain a bit to the side so it is not dead on centre and may add more interest, keep it up

tja88- Thanks a lot! I'm trying to dive back into digital painting, and have been experimenting with a lot of new brushes. Still trying to figure out what works for me, but glad you like it..

    NewmanD- Thanks dude!

Inishmore- I just got very similar critique from my friend. I think I was struggling to get a handle on some new brushes I was working with and didn't quite pull the image together with the timelimit I set for myself. But the second landscape came out a bit better I think. Thanks for the feedback!

LMK- Good point, the composition could be a bit more thought out. Thanks for looking.

Here are a couple recent pages, some vehicle thumbnails and a chick wearing a helmet. Hope you guys dig them:

    Wr00m- Thanks!

Alright here's my contribution for today, a PS sketch of this heavily armored guy. He's supposed to be wearing qasi-futuristic riot gear/ armor. The second image shows a few characters I came up with while hanging out at the coffee shop with a couple friends, sort a post-apocalyptic group. Hope you enjoy, and always I appreciate the feedback.

I really like that last sketch. It looks very...dynamic? (On top of lacking terminology English also isn't my native language) Though I think the right guy's arms look a little too short/thin. But that may be just me.

Keep it up and thank you for the lovely feedback in my sketchbook!

Inishmore- Thanks, and your English sounds fine to me

NewmanD- Thank you, I appreciate it.

Small update, I finished up the weapon designs I had been working on. It was definately a fun challenge to design them all, really reinforced how important silhouette is to design.

Cool weapon designs I really like the right/third one in the very top row. Are these based on specific weapons? (Like, the one on the very lft in the top row has a slightly "Star Trek"-ish feel to me, I wonder if it's on purpose or whether it's just me)

    @mariusz - Thank you!

@Inishmore- They aren't based off of specific weapon designs, however I was definitely referencing real world technology when coming up with them. I wanted them to feel like they belonged in a near future setting, so some of the shapes I used really aren't too far off of some used in weapons we have today. As far as the one on the top left feeling star-trekish, I think that's just a coincidence haha.

Here are a couple new pieces. A design for a robot I am working on and a random sketch page:

Unfortunately I've been away from CA for a few weeks now; I needed to take a break from what I was doing. I really felt like my work was in a bit of a rut and I needed some time to re-evaluate what I am trying to do artistically. So I decided to do a few pieces purely for fun and these are what I ended up with. I know they aren't concept art or illustration per se, but I hope you enjoy looking at them anyway, I had a lot of fun making them. Thanks

Nice work, I'd like to see you pushing the character sketches to the level of your technical designs. But great work overall.

@Phil- What's good brah? Haha, don't worry I will put them up here asap, just trying to finish a few more. Congrats again on the scholarship- you've got nothing but good things coming your way, keep werkin' hard.

@The_Flying_Dutchman- Thank you, I appreciate it. I too would like to push the characters a bit further, I think the tech stuff just comes a little more naturally to me.

    @stormrider85- Thanks dude!

Good book dude, nice pencils. On the blue line robot, be careful of that left leg, from the angle we are looking at it should be smaller then the right. looking forward to more updates.

@ Phizpietl- Thanks mang, glad you're into it!

Here's what i ended up with for the abstract piece. I just added as the header for my blog; I think seeing it against a white bg really strengthens the design. Also, here are some thumbs I sketched out tonight. Should be fun to develop a bit more when I have some time, but now it's time for bed.

    Cooooooool, nyce dude.
I like the way that abstract turned out man.

You know what I would like to see you tackle is a down-the-barrel view of some of these guns. That would a good folio piece and a nice compliment to these gun works.

    Hey Dana,

What a treasure and inspiration this sketchbook is. Just stumbled in and it looks great. Very neat drawings and which especially caught my eye are the almost abstract sketches on the 21st post. Those graffiti style abstract pieces are terrific as well.

Also your designs are very cool and you seem to have a good grasp of the form and perspective.

If you were to accept my advice I would encourage to draw more from life as well as anatomy.

Keep up the great work, I'll stop by soon again

@ Phiz- Thanks dood. Definitely have plans for some alternate views in the near future.

@ Jussi Tarvainen- Hi Jussi, thanks for stopping by the ol' sketchbook. I appreciate the kind words and feedback. And yes, you are correct- I need to get back into doing some more studies from life. Glad to hear you are into the abstracts.

I've been super busy lately trying to figure out what I am going to do for school. However, I am happy to say that I got into TAD under the entertainment art program. I can't wait to get started, but really need to pack in as much drawing as possible before classes begin. Anyway, here are a few things I've been working on: the completed gun thumbnails from an earlier post, a few really quick face studies, and a sketch page. More to come soon!
