It would be relatively cheap and help those hard of hearing as well as anyone interested if there were transcripts of the classes available to those who participate.

Jason,
When I use my hearing aid, I can hear some things from the left side but the right's all gone. But when I take off the 'aid, I hear nothing. I just sleep too well at nights.
I'm sure that it's possible utilizing a headphone would be one way to amp up the volume, but I believe learning from visual cues seem to be the best way for me to learn along with other tidbit of information. Subtitles, if they were recorded sessions, would make sense. After all, that's how I watch movies in this manner on DVD or using TED. In fact, the ted.org website has such captioning technology now. Very interesting.
Ironically, I'm not that fluent with sign language to pick up on it on a quick pace.
What I would kill for is an Apple tablet with such live streaming via internet browser while sitting in the cafe bistro a few blocks from my place. It's the coming up with the $500 that's a pain in the neck. Then again, there's scholarships. EDIT: I meant to add in transcripts or recorded sessions in the packets.
I do read lips extensively but it takes a lot of mental energy to pay this much attention to the point where my mind can get fried and I space out. That I have to be careful with.
But using cameras at the instructors would be difficult because they would probably move a lot or focus on visual demonstrations of the techniques involved. I would probably get sensory overload when reading lips and looking at another camera perspective if they demo.

This sounds amazing, I decided not to take spring semester at my school (switching schools in fall, no point in finishing their 'core' classes if I'm not even transferring them plus it sucked) so this seems like a perfect way to still learn stuff, since I do better when I have due dates, haha.
You can unequip that attitude.
May seem like a stupid question, but just curious, will scholarships apply to the Discovery introduction as well? I will gladly be paying the the $500 for the introduction myself...but just asking for those who are not sure I guess.
this program sounds great.
depending on how many students that are hard of hearing attend, they could always get someone to sign what the instructor is saying.
A downloadable subtitled vid for the lesson + live q&a would be great, any more infos on the format of the lessons by the way? will there be other streaming solutions? I had problems during one of the first live streaming ones (color theory) but it's probably because of my sucky isp...

Well, if you are deaf and have your own interpreter, he/she can interpret sitting in front of you and the monitor. But otherwise, you would have to watch the interpreter AND the instructor's visual demonstration. I can't follow ASL fluently at all and would get lost in translation, so I have to either read lips or watch the cues to understand what its being applied.
It was one of the biggest weaknesses that my old art school had more than ten years ago without any kind of 'accessibility' for me. It's one reason why I felt that 'group critiques' don't work well for me. I could go on all day pointing out the flaws from the system and why group crits don't work well as opposed to one on one crits.
EDIT: by the way, hiring an ASL instructor can be expensive so therefore, sub-titled captions make a lot more sense especially if you want to turn the volume down and watch it in silence at a public place or with headphones on which is your choice.
EDIT part 2: By the way, I'm referring to the old fashioned academic approach to group critiques in person. I don't have a problem with crits online from a larger audience because it's easier to see what's being said. Back in the day, there was'nt such a forum as this and we only had the professors provide feedback.

Thanks everyone.
The old live stream tech is not being used. We have a new technology which works very very well. I have been able to watch the classes on wifi without any problems.
The scholarship program is for the full school. This is an overview on the kinds of things we are going to be doing and is going to be packed with content. I hope everyone can make it. We made it as affordable as we can. Five weeks is a lot of work for everyone and we are giving it our all.

I am assuming there is a limit to the amount of students that can Participate in the 5 Week Program.
I was wondering how many students would be allowed to take the course???
Thanks
Wow, Really want to do this. Will have to see. Would like even more info, so I am waiting patiently![]()
On Demand option is surely best for me, seeing I have school and two jobs to concentrate on. -because of this, if I join this, is it possible to have it longer than the usual 30day streaming? Dunno if I can watch 5 week material in just a timespan. I might, but never know how swamped I am.
Will there also be assignments? Because that again for me, mean more time. I am willing to stay up late night (like I am already doing to manage extra studies, ect ) But yeah...

There are a limited number of spots currently for the live courses. We will also have on demand capability as well.
I expect we will sell out as we are going to be making quite a bit of press in the coming days. The program is excellent and there is nothing else as comprehensive or as available to all. We will update everyone as it gets close.
Super thanks for asking. We will have more info shortly.

Well, I've been trying to figure out how to get funds in time for February for this, due to the kind Christmas present from a stranger of being run off the road and the associated repair bills. But no luck it seems.
If the on-demand is up for a while, perhaps I can get enough in time. It looks excellent though and seems a great way to taste what is to come. Very nifty. =)

Perfect timing starting right after my term ends at university. Really looking forward to this and probably 100 times better than the last term itself...
Oh man, I am in on this ASAP.

Is The Art Department an online atelier coming in June and this course is an introduction to what the Art Department has to offer?
Is for beginners to professionals?

I think you are basically right with the rest.

I'm speaking with my employer about taking this course live but I don't see anything about what time or how much time it will be during the day.
Looking forward to details of the introduction.
Just a few questions - What is meant by "One focus week + Port Reviews" does that mean that you get one of the weeks live and the other weeks on demand? Just a little confused on that one.
Other question - do you forsee some sort of financing option - like 2 installments of $250 or something like that? It might make it a bit easier for people to consider paying $250 for 2 months rather than $500 all at once. Although, I must say that the price is very reasonable.
Thanks!
Jamie
Not yet, alot of us are excited and waiting too
From Jason's earlier post "There are a limited number of spots currently for the live courses. We will also have on demand capability as well." So I think they will all be done live then on demand later.
Right, I think what I was asking for clarification on is the definition of "Port Reviews". If Port Reviews = On Demand. So, in other words, this $375 option would be the On Demand option with one week being live. Thanks for the response.Quote:

ahhhh...ok PORTFOLIO REVIEW. duh, makes sense. I didn't realize that was an abbreviation. Thanks!
ay caramba!
what an excellent offering and great price !
i'm gonna scrape and scrounge ... i need to participate!
(note: A 2 payment option would be really kool, and make my decision 100% ... pay half up front ... pay balance halfway through courses ?? )
Peace,

I cant wait for more info![]()
i cant wait....this is the perfect time for me......never giving up on the dream!
I'm looking forward to hear more about this. 5 weeks is a long time, and given the time differences from you and here (9hours or so) I hope it's not designed in a way that would keep people up late. Though you already seem to have the solution with on demand.
Other than that this is really a great price, even for someone like me who has no income and just finished high school. I quit my philosophy course to able to get into art wholeheartedly, and yeah.. looks like I'll be spending my last penny on this.
Thanks for doing this
p.s Any news regarding your workshop coming up soon?
