Ah, what the hey... My own personal nomination for the Ugliest Building: the Experience Music Project

I'm sure it's an architectural marvel. I know photographers who love its many contours and angles and colors. Being neither an architect nor a photographer, however, to me it looks like a wad of trash chucked off the Space Needle.

And it's way, way too expensive to get into the danged thing...

Abandoned sweet wrappers. Great inspiration. I can spot the Brazil nut in toffee - my favourite. Don't you just love the scrunched up building look /sarcasm.

The basket is elegance personified against the last.

god i like most of the buildings in this thread besides the op (which wouldnt be that bad without forcing the likeness to a basket with the handles and all)

at first i really disliked these ones in my hometown (oviedo, spain)

A few hideous buildings from Down Under....

The Hobart Federation Concert Hall.
Done in some kind of metal that started out shiny and silver and has now rusted to a horrible brown. Which was apparently intentional. I call it the Tin Can (even though its not made of tin I dont think)



Our lovely Federation Square in Melbourne. Not a single right angle in the whole complex apparently. When building it ran over time and over budget and still won awards. You love it or you hate it. I kinda like it.


Saw a doco on this thing and I think its terrible. Looks unfinished and just ghastly. The Pompidou in Paris I think

Centre Pompidou is awesome!
It was mainly designed by engineers as opposed to architects, it's supposed to showcase the effeciency of the construction, hence it looks that way.

I don't mind the Pompidou centre as long as it stays in France. Or else in the middle of the North Sea, where it wouldn't look out of place among the oil rigs...

I can't think of many 20th century municipal architects and planners who don't deserve to be shot. The whole town of Slough deserves special mention in a discussion of ugly environments. Oddly it's quite close to Windsor, which is very pretty. It's as though anything ugly got banished from Windsor and shoved into Slough. Slough Bus Station, where I had to stop on the way to Royal Holloway University when I was studying there, was a particularly hellish dump. (I remember once looking at a dead pigeon lying on the concrete with its guts spilled out, while waiting for a bus in Slough, and thinking 'you lucky, lucky bastard!')

Arriving at a building as impressive as Royal Holloway at the end of the trip made it slightly worth it. The Victorians had much more flair than the modernists. The Founder's Building is like an overblown chateau.

Slough also has a particularly awful looking library, which resembles a brutalist bunker. It seems, however, that plans are afoot to replace this with a shiny new building which would be an eyesore anywhere else... (The adjacent Church is presently the only remotely attractive building in the town.

The 'Dominicanenkerk' in Maastricht, it's a nice mix of old an new...






'Justitiepaleis' ('palace of justice' literally translated, makes it sound satanic haha) Anyone who's been in there can tell you it's HUGE! Makes me feel so small.

Some pretty unusual buildings here, gotta admit I liked looking at most of them.

When I read the thread's title this building immediately came to mind. I've hated it ever since I was a kid.

Number 2 is our parliament house.

Number 3 is located near number 1, I really liked this building as a kid.

The campus of UMass Dartmouth feels like a very long, 60's sci-fi, concrete spaceship. I had an overwhelming feeling of what a mistake it all was when I first walked through it. I wondered, how people felt and what they said when they first saw it.

Holy shit, most of these buildings are fantastic.

personally I love rustic cottages, or medieval/tudor style buildings.
I really don't care for boxy, lazily done, modern buildings that you see in cities.

I'm also finding it ironic how many of you guys are posting art unis/collages. You'd think out of everything people that designed them would have more interesting designs. xD

Ugly modern architecture is particularly inexcusable, I think, in old cities which are known for their beauty. For instance Oxford, famous for its Gothic and Renaissance colleges also has some hideous boxy architecture. With all that history to live up to and be inspired by, modern planners saw fit to deposit the same junk architecture as is found in too many other places.
