    Photoshop Color Wheel (Free!) Download

Just an 'official' announcement that my interactive "Painters Wheel" for Photoshop CS4 is available now as a free download to the universe at large!

This version is completely free and functional (though donations are very, very nice).

It basically attempts to mimic Painter's and Gimp's style of color wheel in Photoshop (something that's been sorely lacking for ...er... ever) using Photoshop's relatively new embedded flash technology.
The color wheel appears just like the default color picker as a native panel that can be minimized, docked, etc. but is always available for picking.

You can find it here: http://lenwhite.com

Please consider joining the mailing list while you're there so I can let you know when updates come out.
Also, if you have ideas for additional features there's a forum to post stuff like that. I'd love to hear from you.

I hope you enjoy it. ConceptArt.org was my primary inspiration to create it. Thank you for that.

    - Len (vorp)

PS: Sadly, there are weird issues with Vista 32-bit that may prevent you from enjoying the magic of Painters Wheel on this config. Sorry 'bout that. If this is you, let me know. There are some 'weak' work-arounds.

This is a great extension. I was planning to making the exact same thing myself, eventually.
I would like to request a little square on the panel showing the chosen color. Possibly the foreground and background for quick choosing. I was going to post on your forums but I hate registering for so many things all the time.

    That's a good idea.
Thought about it but left it off for simplicity in this first version.
Not a tough thing to add. I'll try to get it in the next version soon.

damn, the vista 64 bit version isn't working on 32 bit system at all
that's sad, but I'll probably upgrade to win7/64 bit later this year.

    Sorry ikken.
Vista 32 has a weird "bug" with respect to Flash in Photoshop.
The problem is getting the wheel to reflect color changes made via other Photoshop color pickers (like normal color picker or eye dropper).
If you really didn't need to pick colors any other way than with the Painters Wheel (which is unlikely) then it would work fine. I'd have to give you a special 'Vista 32 modified' version that won't crash Photoshop when it's opened.

    Awesome, thank you very much
I'm using the XP version, and it feels a little quirky when changing the hue, you can't really drag it, only click. But either way it's a great add-on that I've been looking for!

Though I have a suggestion and that is to be able to increase it's size when increasing the panel size? For people on higher resolutions, it can be quite small, so customizing it's size can proove handy

Thank you very much vorp (Len White?)

This makes an upgrade to CS4 more tempting now.

    Hi Adrian,

There are a lot of benefits to using a color wheel when painting. The biggest for myself is that I can just work faster. It's just easier for myself to select color and shift that color to a cooler or warmer version, select the complementary color for greying and selecting palettes before starting a painting.

All other drawing apps have some sort of color wheel. Painter, ArtRage, Sketchbook Pro, Sai, Open Canvas but for some reason Adobe has ignored this feature. One more thing, it's just bigger! LOL! When your monitor res is very high the PhotoShop color palette is the size of a stamp!

That is awesome. Thank you very much for making a working painters colour wheel, it is something that I have been wanting for a long time. For so long I've been faking it with swatches, now we have the real thing!

The only slight criticism I have is that it's a little bit laggy when dragging the outer colour wheel around. But this is such a small niggle compared to how much joy it is bringing me. Thanks again!

    This is awesome!
I like painting with everything hidden except for the Color pallet but those slider arrows are tiny! I have the Color Pallet set to F6 so I can tab everything hidden and then bring the Color pallet back with F6. I couldn't see how to assign a hot key to your plug-in so I just added it to the Color pallet and now hitting F6 brings up your wheel. Nice work.

Not to steal your thunder but the guy who made the color picker plugin has a new version and he's charging $7 for it. So maybe you could try working toward a paid version also. I for one and happy to support anyone who makes my work easier. And competition is always good for the consumer.

Thank you so much for this! I'm running Windows 7 (x64) with Photoshop CS4 and it works beautifully. Like others have mentioned, there is a slight lag with the outer ring when dragging the slider dealie, but I wouldn't call it a hindrance or even a nuisance. It just jumps when dragging along the outer ring quickly- if you drag it slowly the lag is negligible at best. So when you're getting finicky about colors, chances are you won't even notice. You're an asset to the community Vorp. I really appreciate this!

(For anyone wondering, there is a readme.txt in the zip file that explains how to install it)

Hey, feral714, you're right - Wow, Anastasiy finally got his color wheel picker done!
It's ON! His stuff is great. Probably well worth the $7.
His original color picker was my inspiration so I wish him all the luck.
I guess I better give him some money and try it out.
Works with CS3 too! That's great for non-CS4 peeps.

Thanks for all the kudos folks. I'm glad it's making people happy.
I'm hoping to speed up the responsiveness when I have some time to invest in it.
Donations always help get me excited to put time in on it. (hint, hint). : )

Eloth, thanks for the love. I'm a little surprised you haven't figured out my real name yet, given the Painters Wheel download site and all... : )

Ryanoir, you still having trouble getting Painters Wheel working with Photoshop on Win 7?

I haven't heard many reports of a similar configuration problem.
