Did Jaime Jones do work on Avatar, or did they just rip him off? I know this isn't the first time floating rocks have been used, but really?? It's just so similar.

uhh... okay.
Yup, he holds the copyright on 'floating rocks'.
ah yes, the rip-off is quite clear... well, no, not really, specially since the only reason they're similar is because they're rocks, and they're floating... and they both got plants...
someone should probably tell roger dean as well

I suppose the first thing to do before everyone jumps to conclusions is to verify if the rocks are the same rocks...
I would be highly suspicious from a theft standpoint unless the rocks are all either igneous (whether plutonic or volcanic is important), sedimentary (and the strata direction would be critical to determine here), or metamorphic (with stress on the original strata/type before transformation).
We obviously would be remiss if we automatically omitted dried gum, bat guano, or the various forms of synthetic smoked meat sold in supermarkets.
Are any of them petrified organic matter or are we dealing with original inorganic material only?
Did anyone check the subspecies of the plant life and accompanying animal life for similarities?
Just how high are these rocks floating? I'm thinking basalt wouldn't get its ass up there very high when compared with a volcanic pumice mixture.
Exactly what did the artist have as roughage immediately before executing the works...and were they smoking or non-smoking?
For that matter, are the rocks smoking or non-smoking?
Research, people... It's the Goddess' way to keep you from getting your skull deformed...from a floating rock...

WOAH! Why have I never heard of John Martin? And why is it so hard to find nice high-res images of his work?
LOL! Okay okay, points taken. I know he didn't invent floating rocks, they just jumped out as being preeeeeetty preeeeetty similar to me when I saw them. As far as that particular scene of floating rocks go, that is.
This is a bad topic and you should feel bad.
Damn, wrong Avatar again :/
I was thinking someone was stealing Aang's earthbending skills.
Hey, I did a picture of floating rocks when I was in junior high! They're all ripping me off! Hoo hoo, Robin!

Even the rock is a rip off of his father rocky johnson the first black champ i believe.
dean venture is named after roger dean as it turns out.
I didn't think it was a ripoff, but when I saw the trailer I thought: "Waitaminute, ArenaNet???" Plus I have the picture as my wallpaper, so I'm always looking at it.
Check out my comparison of one of the Avatar rocks with a picture my girlfriend took from Zhang Jia Jie National Park in Hunan, China. EXACTLY THE SAME. They just demolished the rocks and shipped them off to Pandora!
Oh my god that's a real place? No way, I need to go there before I die. That looks completely amazing.
OMG, nice comparison Canufcan!! I would love to see that region in china.
Very interesting that they used a real ref!
And another floating rock thing: Ciruelo Cabrals picture "The dragoness" is on a floating rock!![]()

You know, there actually exist real floating rocks, pumice! (As Ilaekae pointed out, but you talked about a mixture! Not good enough for floating! (Unless enough gas is trapped inside of the bubbles lol.) Didn't know you studied geology, nice!)
Oh and here are some other floating rocks that rock.

...anyone ever see "Dragon Hunters"? Came out last year, I think?
Whole damn place is floating rocks.
Really beautiful, too.
The artist who did the "floating rocks" for Avatar is Steven Messing. And you're absolutely right, canufcan, the matte painting he created used elements from that very park in China, from photographs he himself took while on a trip to the region.
Here's another fun fact: Messing also worked on Guild Wars.
