Question Good fine art magazine recommendations

    Hello all,

I just wanted to ask for some good art magazine recommendations as my wife wanted to buy me a subscription. I have a few 'American Artist' and 'American Drawing' magazines. The latter I quite enjoyed as I always enjoy drawings (and prefer figurative art). The former had a great Andrew Wyeth edition, but otherwise was too many landscapes and floral arrangements for my liking.

It doesn't have to be traditional in execution, as I enjoy variety. However, I find many modern magazines like Juxtapoz to be too pretentious.

With all that in mind, I would be more than thankful for any suggestions made (it's awfully hard to find out these things where I currently live)

If you like American Illustration try out the Illustration Magazine.

Illustration in general from well known artist to the more obscure, during the golden age period. Try Vadeboncoeur collection of images.

If you like digital and interested in techniques and such. Try ImagineFX

    Hope that helps.

    I would recommend:

American Art Collector - one of the best but focused on historic artists/groups - mainly representational
Art of the West - good but limited in scope to western, landscape, wildlife, som efigure but mainly representational
International Artist - probably your best bet for a good magazine that covers a wide variety of styles and mediums

    Have fun!

For quality and quantity, I'd go with Black & White. Their annual award issues are killer. Probably the best works you'll find in any magazine anywhere. Although the Communications award issues can be very good. The one for illustration is great. It's once a year so you don't really need a subscription. Getting Spectrum once a year is a great treat, too.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will look into the mags.

I should point out that I am not so interested in "Western" art nor illustrations per se. Some of the work that inspires me is stuff like Dali, Schiele, Klimt, James Jeans sketchbook work, Joao Paulo Alvares Ruas, Degas, Michel Henricot, and Nicolas Uribe. I could name more, but that should give you the idea.

I think those guys would all be considered Western artists, unless you mean Western as in cowboys and Indians... I guess I'm thinking art history Western as oppose to Eastern.

but yeah, they're all pretty hit or miss but sometimes I like to check out New American Paintings and Hi-Fructose (kinda like Juxtapose but a little less predictable, the last one I got has great Sam Webber and Eric Fortune stuff in it)

edit: side note, looking at your list of artists, wondering if you know Alex Kanevsky's work? I don't know why he in particular jumps to my mind but you might like it

    Thanks again for the suggestions.

Dave, I think I mistook how this quote:

    mainly representational
Art of the West - good but limited in scope to western, landscape, wildlife...
was meant. I took it as the "Great American Western" style art. You know... Americana.

In any case, I will be happily looking into these magazines to check them out.

And Alex Kanevsky is happily listed amongst my bookmarked artists Thanks for the recommendation, though. Seems you would have been spot on, Dave.
