    Joe's Sketchbook

Hello, my names Joe Shaw and I'm 15 years old (2009). Originally I started posting drawings and sketches for fun, but I have since started trying to make a lot of serious improvements to my work and hone my skills to a level which will hopefully land me a job in the games and/or film industry as a Concept artist or Illustrator. That is my long term goal. All comment and crit welcome, I am here to improve.

Sweet looking dragons! The bodies seem a little stiff though, maybe make the limbs a little more fluid? Not as boxy. Don't know if that makes sense but there it is . Cool armor concepts too, very lively, keep at it.

A digital i did at school when i was bored, i think it looks alright, a bit rough though and I did use some curves for the brightness on the lava flow (cheating? ).
Anyways would really love any advice on digital painting

You should wait before using colour.

Grow further with your line drawings before even concidering using colour.

These sketches look very nice, one thing I would advise would be to make them abit more dynamic, I couldn't help but notice how very little movement there was, some of the body parts dont really correspond with the movements of the larger, parenting body parts, but other than that, I think that you are excellent, I started on this site whenever I turned 15 which was around last year and I have to say that you are doing a hell of alot better job than I did, keep posting

Thanks Panda yeah, i've been practising a lot more dynamic positions but they are pretty hard, I find the anatomy can go out of proportion a lot easier than if they were just static. But i'll keep doing more

    Anyways heres a quickie XD

These are some anatomy studies from last night. The first two are referenced from a book "anatomy for the fanatasy artist" and the archer is straight from mind

in regards to your last post, I must laugh, because I recently bought the same book, and I went to look for the poses you based these on... XD

your human anatomy is already far better than mine, (Ib being the same age as yourself), but your creature and armor design seems to be lacking in the detail department... don't be afraid to experement with unconventional designs, heavy shading, and and add in little bits of veins, spikes, ad perhaps natural armor plating to your dragon designs... they look abit dull otherwise... the same goes for the armor!

alright, now that I have posted my useless bit of advice, carry on and have fun!

I mainly draw creatures and charcters of a SciFi/Fantasy nature, but I have dabbled in the art of vehicles, landscapes, and buildings as well...
I have a tendencey to refute assumptions and statements if they have no valid basis, but that will probably be irrelevant here...

Thanks for the advice Zypherax, I took a look at your deviant art page, your work is nicely detailed

and now - an apple! exciting! (sarcasm) I think it went ok, apart from around the top which is a little messed up.

ah, something else I must try someday... apple studies... well, acctually, I really need to do quite afew studies of nearly everything conceavable... because I seldom ever do, and it would probably be benificial...

ut of course, the battle against procrastionation is always a loosing one... I only just started work on a contest that's due in about sixteen days! argh...

ooooh, I like the 'finished' piece you have there... although I wouldn't call it finished...

the hair you have placed attop her head does not really resemble hair... I sugest going in and drawing thick and thin clumps and strands of hair folowing the direction of that... shape... and be sure to add some flyaways for effect as well!

    and... detail... is... lacking...

I mean, you did a good job rendering the clothing, but it all seems to be rather monocromatic... add some designs on the cloth, perhaps some metal plates somewhere, or chains and belts of some kind flowing accross her waist... the piece just sort of looks empty without some sort of minute accesory items...

that's just my opinion of course, feel free to call it finished if you want, but keep what I've said in mind for future pieces...

a little bit of anatomy and some armour or character sketches, tried to add a bit more detail in these , though I dont quite like the way they turned out, I can see the first one is a little off centre. Top stuff is kinda startin to look old :o
