I find it pretty interesting just how much one's belief in their own ability can fluctuate over a span of like a week. I must've gone through at least 10 "cycles" of consisting of "i am so shitty" to "i am the greatest artist ever known to man" just since my last post.

some hogarth, sorry for my poor lighting ability.

more poor lighting! But this was done with a live model! how exciting. 3 hours, and was my first time drawing from a nude model so I'm actually not being sarcastic when I say exciting.

    some things...

    some things..from photos.

hey man, good to see you tackling so much subject matter-cars, environments, etc. this can only be good for you in the long run. your traditional paintings are also quite nice and i saw this as a big improvement when it came to the ID stuff:
    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K...2520thumbs.jpg

ok crit time! right now, i think your figures will improve boatloads if you crack down on your proportions. the biggest way to solve this problem is life drawing. you said it was your first time drawing from the live model in your last post--keep this going. you'll see your figures from imagination become more naturalistic in no time (imo, life drawing is much more useful than hogarth). hope you don't mind this quick paintover i did of your char. i thought the design and the rendering was good and interesting, but i felt it could've been more if the proportions were simply more natural.

painting and rendering is important but so is the fundamental drawing: proportion, perspective, structure, etc.

anyway, keep up the good work. you're on your way man, don't stop!

Eightball has summed up what I was going to say pretty much, other than that your values and colours are looking really nice and its good to see you looking at composition. Just sinced I last stopped by things have improved. The study of that girl in #356 is boss and the self portrait looks much more sound

Eightball: First of all thanks for the big crit! secondly i must've been blinded or something when I was doing that character. The stuff you pointed out looks really obvious, to the point where that's all i see now. I'm doing life drawing weekly now, it just hasn't always been available to me in the past. THANKS AGAIN!

    zelda_geek: thanks

TFsean: thanks, i see the mistakes now! yeah that study was mostly playing around with being really clean and keeping everything tidy.

sketches! funfact: the color of the paper changes depending on the pen/pencil during the scan.

    what a nice wheat color

a quickie study.. I didn't even end up using the braid (see below)

katniss from hunger games. i finished the series and have to say that the third book was a bit disappointing. this is my interpretation of her from the middle of the second book.

the background/pose are kind of generic and boring but i promise i'll do something more dynamic for my next illustration. in any case I feel like this is a small level up for me.

and a sargent copy. my appreciation for him grows with every study i do.

Tons of improvement going on. The landscape with the glowing figure is crazy!

The gouache sketches are pretty cool too, I like the one of the kitchen and the one of the street. There are a few things Ive learned that you could consider trying. For one thing white colored pencil will go on top of it for quick accurate highlights. Fine liner pens will also go on top to quickly help imply detail. you can also do quick gray scale lay ins with markers to strengthen the values.

For painting car rims you could try playing with the polar coordinates filter and then free transforming it into perspective. something to try anyway.

    Keep at it.

surfandsnow: hey! yes for some reason i hadn't thought to mix pens in with gouache but its something i'll try out. Polar coordinates was fun to play with but a bit too unpredictable imo, thanks for the suggestion though.

an assortment of some of the better life drawings, sorry for the camera quality!

painting gestures? I dunno what to call them, but studies from mjranum's photos in oil
to anyone who gets a bit tired of digital from time to time, try traditional! it's pretty refreshing.

Those traditional gestures are really dynamic and i think it's about how the bodies get off the paper too.
As about the digital ones, i think you have really interesting enviros but have to work more on the values.
Keep up those gestures, they are going pretty well.
    Cheers!

I am determined to get better at environments. I've been doing lots of reading and studying on history of architecture to try and get a better feel for buildings and stuff, but man this stuff is hard

    some frustrating stuff

and a sketch I ended up liking and tried to push further but just ended up getting frustrated and impatient with this too

mech/vehicle sketches! Some better than others and none of them really all that functional haha. Still working on functional design, but I think I'm getting a better overall sense for mechanical things. To be honest I was actually studying industrial stuff at first because I thought I "had to", but now it's gotten to be really fun.

no fancy construction, the perspective is reaaally eyeballed.

something from imagination that i spent noodling on for awhile today and will probably do some more work on it tomorrow. i feel as if my understanding of form has gotten a lot better as of late.

it was inspired by the voydanoi from perdido street station and their watercrafting thing, although its not really looking like voydanoi or water.

Ahhh really nice mech . I still haven't finished scott robertsons first dvd but i can tell it pays off!

    Okay crits!

-Something I noticed about the mech is the functionality of the legs, the front legs show that it will move foward but the back legs show that they would move side ways.

-Looking at all your figures you generally make the forearm to long , so careful about those.

Anyway keep it up, have a nice one !
