cw: Thanks! I'd recommend just doing some small greyscale thumbnails and try to keep the fore, mid and background sections as different values. I had the same issue not too long ago, it takes some getting used to coming from mostly doing characters.

    ginART: Ty!

    xbert: Hahah thanks!

htkpeh: Ty! Love your work btw

Been working on another landscape tonight, but this one is from imagination with some very general reference. Still a way to go with these but it's an improvment I think. Trying to avoid the muddy colours, and vary my edges and while trying to commit what types of brushes to use for different surfaces to memory.

    Thanks guys.

pgf95: The noise texture is from "Filter -> Noise -> Add noise" in Photoshop. I usually do this on a new merged layer and then mask out the parts I don't want. I've just recently started using this, so i'm probably overdoing it a bit at the minute!

I did some metal material studies a while back, inspired by one that Matt Kohr (thanks Matt!) did in his sketchbook many moons ago.. anyways, I've decided to start doing these more often and keep them for reference. I'll add some notes where I can based on my observations which will hopefully be helpful to someone. If I've got anything wrong or you've noticed something I haven't I'd love to know. Here's first one..

    Magma
    • The most molten part gives off the most light and appears slighly blurred due to the heat
    • The black "islands" are where the lava has started to cool and become more solid. These areas have some specularity and are far more rounded than typical rock. They're also raised slightly above the molten material below, since they're floating on top of it.
    • The hottest areas have fewer solid formations. As we move away from the hot-spots there are more of them and they begin to join together.
    • The cooler lava has the highest saturation and is strewn between the black rock "islands". These areas also have the most visible texture to them.

Hahah thanks guys, here's a leathery one.

    • Fairly specular.
    • The surface is split into a pattern of raised interlocking "rounded warped diamond" shapes with fillets between them.
    • These shapes are connected together into a sort of web.
    • Sets of near-parallel lines which run across the material where it's been folded. These lines fit into the fillets between segments.

I'll probably do another version of this soon, I only realised some of my mistakes after finishing it.

Uhh, so much eyecandy in here! I really like your brushwork in the portrait. Also the landscape from memory.
And the material studies look very interesting too, seems like a good study, might have to try that as well

Thanks for all the kind comments - much appreciated. Here's a few more mini-studies. I'm limiting myself to only the round brush with adjusted softness, focusing on the colours, depth and large edges..

Ragnaros colour study in prep for a piece of fan art I'm planning. Same drill - only hard and soft round brushes and focusing on the edges and colours. Using some in-game and modelviewer screenshots as reference for this. (oh and that's why I've been doing magma material studies of course )

sick sick sick!! the lizard dude is so rad - one thing i would say is his left foot is turned inwards too much, making the stance look a little awkward and uncomfortable.

really looking forward to seeing the ragnaros piece - my personal favourite comp is number 1. number 2 is sick and would make the scale of of the piece look great but i dont think the above view will show enough of the character.

paintover of my first point - i feel a bit cheeky because you are a lot sicker than me but hopefully it might be a little bit helpful:
