Wow, those landscape studies are tight! What's your method on them? Mine always end up looking quite messy :/

Thanks guys and girls. LeaderOfZombies: It changes a lot depending on what I'm doing tbh, and I'm experimenting a lot with process at the minute. For those studies I blocked the silhouettes of the major masses in quite cleanly first then grouped the next layers onto the base ones. I also used some complementary underpainting on them, ripping off Shaddy and Jaime Jones.
Been doing some greyscale comp studies today from video game screenies. They look pretty disgusting looking but good practice all the same..
Some sketches for chow..

Yep, definitely ZTFO! I always have to remind myself to that, cause it constantly gets me into trouble. Your comment about hard edges is also what I'm starting to find, since hard edges are only really apparent in the most ambient occluded of spaces or direct specular highlights. Everything else can be dealt with rather softly. So those who say don't paint with a soft round brush, go tell that to Dave Rapoza, since that's ALL he uses because of this fact.
I've lately been collecting a series of 3D models to reference from and to do studies of and have found it tremendously helpful in understanding lighting for my painting. It's the same thinking behind doing a master study or a painting from life. As long as it helps you, who cares what you use, right? Anyway, I've always loved your work, especially with color, and since I'm having trouble with that area at the moment, any crits or help you could pass on in my SB would be greatly appreciated. Keep it up, sir!
Amazing stuff mate. Truly inspirational. I'm absolutely stoked for Cyberpunk too.
Nice study and excellent blog post! I've never really considered the value of studying from CG and you made an excellent case for it. "I hope this has been useful to someone." Accomplished.![]()
sweet chow entry, I like his expression, he sure means business!

Thanks guys.
Just a very quick (~1.5 hour) experiment tonight - horrible unplanned mess with some photo bashing. Trying out some new brushes I made and playing about with some different approaches.
I love the old man design up above. Is that 1.5 hour study rendered in photoshop? The Entranceway looks so real.
maaann really cool desings you got in here.
super raaa44d man, that wow thing was a couple months now but super sick really smashed that
Thanks guys.
Colour Coded: It was done in Photoshop but there's a photo texture dropped in over that entrance way.
So Aliens Colonial Marines was released today. I had the pleasure of working on the project for about 6 months, way back in 2011. They're pretty ropey but it was so long ago now! Been a huge Aliens fan since I was about 7 years old so it was really exciting to be given the opportunity to work on this. It's a shame that the game is getting such bad reviews. I've not played it yet since Amazon have screwed up on the "release day delivery" option once again. If anyone knows somewhere that can ship games on time in the UK I'd be very grateful!
If anyone wants to see more, I've posted some others over on my CG Hub page
Cheers,
Steve
EDIT Had to remove all the Aliens art, sorryPermission was given but apparently not from the right people

man i really like your digital line work, nice updates, the last character looks great!
Vesh, those are amazing, man. I look forward to the day when I'm doing stuff for such high profiled games/movies as well. And don't worry about the reviews; the art is obviously not lacking on this game with you on it! I'd love some advice/crits/comments from someone as established as you, so if you get the chance, please do stop by my page.
great works!!! thanks for sharing![]()
