ok, it's been a little while since i posted.

let's see, i've got a drawing that i did earlier this year.

and i am trying to do studies in the morning like mr.delicious and the crimson daggers (his drive and determination is really inspiring). the first was from a parade magazine picture of sigourney weaver for avatar. then a study from a tree book i have, and a study of a howard pyle painting. the proportions on all these are horribly off, but i am trying to focus on color and getting more comfortable with digital technique, so i'm trying to let that go. not sure if i'm done with these or not.

lastly there's a painting that i have been working on for a while. did the drawing for it a LONG time ago, and have always wanted to paint it. think my skill level with the digital stuff is finally starting to improve some, so i'm giving it a serious shot. not done yet but i am at least happy with how it is going. this is about the third time i have redone all the trees in the back though...

trying to get the angel drawing cropped so i can start painting it soon too. and i'm working on my anatomy again, so maybe i'll get those scanned and post those too soon.

    The pencils are looking great!
Keep going at it with the digitals and I'm sure you'll get there soon.
I like the last one with the barbarian guy, but it seems the foreground and the background are reallly separate at the moment. Maybe carry in some of that fog to the foreground?

your pencil drawings look great and I really like the painting of the guy on the horse. Your paintings are looking a little too dark, perhaps cut back on using so much black? just a thought.

    keep up the good work!

kim_bot- i see what you are saying. i accidentally found a variation of the background when i was messing around with levels and stuff. i need to go back and see if it will work out or not, but i haven't really gotten there yet. but the fog is an interesting idea too.

    theunknownsketcher- wow, thanks alot.

numlaut- heh, you know, i have a friend that is always telling me to use more black. i have a tendency to use a very muted palette. not enough color or value really. guess i have been reacting to that.

anyway, another day or two of work. the painting is really coming along now. i went back to the original trees, not because they are better really, but because there is less to paint over in the future.

and here's a drawing i did last night while watching highlander reruns (excellent). sorta the direction i was going with my team chow piece, but our team never really got going and in the end, we had to bow out. this isn't quite done either, he'll be holding a razor in the same hand with the bottle, and there will be cuts and blood all over his other arm.

You're linework is superb. Now you just need to get a good grasp at painting and you will really rock. The main thing I noticed you don't do when working with colors is letting them influence each other. This is very important for unifying the whole picture as in reality objects reflect light and with it color, which in turn mixes with the colors of the objects it's reflected onto. I hope I'm making sense. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see more of your pencil drawings.

    hi,

fantasyartist- yeah i know exactly what you are talking about. color is something i've had problems with for a while. i'm working to be more bold with my use of it. right now i think this piece (the final, below) does what i wanted it to, even if it doesn't seem very ambitious. stay tuned for the next one, i finally figured out how i want to paint the "angel stabbing the demon" drawing from earlier, and i'm excited about it.

it's been a while since i posted. i've had a LOT of computer problems and hand pain going on. neither one is particularly resolved, but at least the computer was working well enough to finally wrap this piece up.

i'm happy with it for the moment. that'll probably only last a few days though.

much thanks to my buddy jason at american greetings in cleveland for all the help and encouragement he gave me on this one.

finally going back into that old cuchulain CHOW from last year (page 1 maybe?). man, i had no idea how under worked that image was. it's amazing what a few saturation layers can do for you.

i'm painting over the guy getting attacked, almost definitely (see the sketch). not sure how i feel about the main guys hair yet.

    progress->

yeah, i know i need more work on the digital, and with color. i'm working to get more comfortable with it all.

a bit more progress on the old chow. still more to go but at least some things are falling into place.

and a doodle i was working on the other night instead of sleeping. i know the eyes are off. i was just more interested in playing with the light, color and form.

The mossy rocks in this one... So delicious!! Great work on that piece. Although, have to say, I'm not a fan of the red overlay in the final, and the background feels rather separated from the rest, but still a fine piece.

    Like your pencils a lot.

i like that last piece of the guy stabbing the other guy in the neck, but the figure with the spear is kinda floating maybe if u put a shadow in the grass it can look more grounded and also there is grass that covers the front foot it has a straight edge kinda looks out of place maybe u dont need to cover that foot
