Sure thing, I have actually been reading the Natural Way to Draw. And yes, you do harp on about it, haha, but it's for the better. The piece above with me in it, was actually the second exercise from this book. I'm going to try the third part of the exercise soon, just been so down lately, I need to snap out of it. =)

Hey man, faces are getting better. Definately look at loomis though cant really beat him for faces. Try to memorise the planes of the head so you get the lighting right just do more more more really

Sheep Research 1

I'm researching the structure which makes up a sheep, it's more interesting than it sounds actually, you'd be surprised.

Profile silhouette referenced from the Anatomy Drawing School book, page 414.

It took forever to find reference video of a sheep standing up.

Sheep tend to graze for hours, so there seems little video of sheep ever standing up, in other words, getting up from a resting position.
There are a few videos on sheep sitting down, and plenty of them walking about, but sitting down was a bit tricky to find.

These are just some preliminary notes, as I've never drawn sheep before, and I have no idea how they walk. I barely know how to animate either, so this all very new for me.

Hey man, faces are improving but definately look carefully at loomis's construction. Start off drawing a sphere with a cross on it. Draw the centreline down and draw the chin. Shave off the sides of the sphere. Dont even look at the features until you have mastered this. I know I can't talk my faces are rubbish but I think you are trying to run before you can walk. Really try to nail the basics man.

The fun stuff is cool but I reckon the time spent doing lines ect would be better spent practicing figure work or something. I know it gets boring sometimes but stick with it. Just keep focused on your target and you'll make it man check out this post:

I think you need to set yourself a bit of a schedule maybe just a loose target for now. Update daily, do a page of Hogarth a day ect, you dont even need to stick to it, its just to give you a bit of direction.

It's really interesting how much progress you've made it's easy to get down about your art but you can see how much you're improving, seriously its like 10 times better than the old one good job Having said that its important not to look back too much, that paitings in the past now and its done its job because of what you've learnt from the painting sorry if this seems a little harsh I really dont mean it to be. I think your greatest downfall as an artist isnt your understanding of the concepts, and It's easy to tell theres nothing wrong with your attitude. I think its more that you lack direction, which is possibly the best downfall to have (if you understand haha ) Just set a schedule and you'll be sorted man great progress lets see more!

I don't know quite how to reply, other than to offer a simple thank you.

Faces are proving to be a challenge, and I shall give an honest attempt to be more patient with them, pushing myself to understand the form and planes, before looking at the features.

Algenpfleger's and Bobb Chiu's thoughts have helped me to understand my limitations, and they've given some hope to go beyond them.

Once upon a time, I did have a schedule, but then I found that I was rushing my work.
I didn't want to do this, I wanted to have the freedom to decide how long I wished to work on a piece.

I do lack direction, yes, and I find it challenging to stay on a particular subject for too long. I'm going to try and address this, even if my pages become smudgey. I'll get out some tracing paper to protect the page, heh.

Well, I suppose my first goal then is to understand the head.

glad to see you're concentrating more on form. This is a very important part of illustrating. All that we draw are 3D shapes in 2D space no matter how complex the shapes are. Its really awesome to see your improvement so keep up the great work!

Practicing line, and observing the shape of line based on emotion, pressure of the hand, somewhat chaotic thought, curvature, left handedness, and blindness.




Lines 3

An exercise in concentration as well as patience. One can see progessive lapses as the drawing of lines continues.

Trying to understand the purpose of ink in study (I'm going to practice this again from a life model tomorrow morning).

One thought which comes to mind is that you can achieve a finer width of line using brush, ink, and pen, than the traditional pencil.

It's good to see you doing many studies of heads and practicing your lines, that kind of hard work is sure to pay off.
I would like to see more pencil work though, and when you're constructing heads, be sure to use a more perfect circle for the basic sphere of the head, because I notice that often you will draw a circle that is kind of pinched in and that causes your heads to be proportionally off. I think Bridgman studies would really benefit you in that.

Hey Jeremy!

I was considering some Bridgman these past few months, so I think I'm going to finally give in and try some of his studies.

Yip, my circles suck bad, there's no excuse, it's just plain laziness on my part, I need to be more focussed, and this likely comes from my lack of direction, not just drawing but in other things as well.

Thank you for the fantastic advice and I'll get going with it.

More heads. I made this small head out of plasticine (Newplast, or Sculpey should be fine) and then I placed it in the light before sketching it, it's really helpful to get a sense of form and a bit of perspective too.
