Hey =) Studies from last day or so. Focusing on how not to suck so much.. eek =( My form needs improving boatloads, specifically from mind, so going to push for that if I’m ever going to have any hope of doing something decent.

Anyone have any movie recommendations? Thx’s =)

Watched Apocalypto last night, creepy movie, but really enjoyed it =)

Also, quick question, do you prefer a drawing on a grey or white background? Your thoughts? Thx's.

    hi there

    congrats on your last posts

i remember that last eye you did (forgot where) it's good anyway
for the background, i definitly prefer non-white (even a bit of gray)

i always laydown some paper texture now.

i watched promotheus recently , it was quite good ( i like sci fi)

Hey! Just wanna say your form has been improving a lot and the last few faces are looking pretty damn good.

Be sure to keep in mind anatomy and proportion a bit more even when you're sketching for shits and giggles. You've come a long way!
My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills

Yo Edward , great man, you keep up, you becoming better everytime.
Now on your question here [+the one in my sb].
Drawing or maybe toning, on grey background will give you the ability to use white for highlihts etc. Lately i use a lot of "colored or B&W" background because it will unite the values better with a background, it will not trick the eye with extra contrast (that you get from having a blank canvas)
Sometimes then i pick a supadupa hard black brush and i draw sillouete and shadows quick and rough. In that case blank canvas gives me the fast highlight i need[that is created simply by the spaces i leave unpainted].
In the end you should always be concerned about the fundamentals, so for example, you have to keep the values under the same range. I mean, dont use white for light areas[ i am saying light areas, not highlight] and then go to and place a grey shadow[unless there is a strong reason like strong reflected light] Everything should be unified, seen as a whole.
This changes according to the needs of what you have to create. How you love to make your thumbs [ you may want to have white as a dominant so it will be back there ready ]
In general i think for illustration works its good to have the canvas filled with some grey or color.
Actually, experiment with it and start questioning yourself what you find better for you.
To stop the long tiring text, for me personally, it depends, and i use both approaches.

    lets keep up

Hey! =) I’m supposed to be writing stuff for university atm, some stupid synopsis shit they want, but I’d rather be drawing =) Here is some shitty photostudy and even shittier imagination stuff =( Need to improve on drawing, and value, also I’m noticing that I’m not sure where to place the colour on faces sometimes. Kinda sucks but I’m gonna make a better effort once I finish my synopsis stuff for handin.

Also damaged my arm (not just the hand now) but my whole shoulder is strained, specifically its the levator scapula muscle =( It's damn painful every time I move my head =(

Anyway, see you guys soon =)

zou - Yip was thinking the same thing, I prefer a toned background myself as well. Thx's for the compliment man =) Tbh I wasn't that keen on Prometheus, the story was kinda bit wishy washy imho, Michael Fassbender was awesome though, that was the best part for me =)

Myst - Thx's man, will work more carefully in my imagi stuff, it needs loads of work for sure, cheers man =)

Kingkostas - Thx's man, I will try your suggestions =) Atm I mostly start from a light or a dark grey value but think I need to just mix it up as you suggested and experiment more with the start. Thx's a lot for your advice, I will get practicing!

Lumens - Ah cool, I wondered how you got those interesting marks in, thx's for the tip man =) I tried Painter today but for some reason it lags quite a bit on just simple Oil bristle brushes. I'll play around with Artrage tomoz, Cheers man =)

Thx's guys, cover your eyes! =(

Hey =) Okay my neck/shoulder pain is getting worse, starting to think something is seriously wrong atm.. =( Handed in synopsis stuff, so thoroughly boring =) Volunteering at a museum tomorrow, so got to get to bed already! Studies + bad imagination

jablar - Cool man =) Didn't soften the edges on it, and then ran out of time on the study.

    Nights =)

Nice updates, you have a unique way of handling skin which I enjoy, very soft and natural looking. With that said, I think you can benefit more from studying the planes of the face for an even more believable look. Keep practicing, very inspiring work all around.

Hey man, how have you been?

I agree with cgaddict, do come work on the facial planes. It can add a lot of volume to your faces. Also, I feel, a lot of your figure work could really improve if you looked at the skeletal structure of the hip area.

Haven't been here for a while. You've improved your sense of color, but anatomy still lacks solid base. It seems that you rush into details, shades and lights too soon. I suggest Gnomon Dynamic Figure drawing with Dave Finch. Stuff helped me some to improve my proportions, and from time to time I still go back to the videos.

Hey =) Been reading The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, found thru Jaime Jones work, on page 135 atm. I like that Robert encourages to sketch all the time.

Seraph Fawkes - Thanks man, I needed a kick in the ass! Will check out Finch's work =)

    hey mate !

i see you're posting much these days, sorry for being absent

the last two head are very nice very delicate rendering, sometimes the end of your strokes are crisp, you should make their beginning and end soft and fading to make them blend (unless you wanted them like that)

there is an interesting deformation and proportion play with those ones, keep up

    Hi matey

Just swung by to see what you have been up to and I realised that its been longer than I thought since I was here last sorry about that mate!
Whilst looking at the last lot of images I have to say the planes of the face are going adrift again as you render them up you need to go back to the loomis and bridgeman and comper them to what you have. The only reason I noticed is that I have the same problem and its burning me up something awful.

    all the best mate.

There are some nice improvements in your sketchbook. I do agree that anatomy is still lacking a bit at times and sometimes your proportions are really off. I'm liking how the image in #1573 is coming out. I'm curious to see where you go with it.

Crazy style, love that last piece it's wild haha.

Curious about 'using another persons pencil' sketch. Did you just use their pencil because your misplaced yours?
(Probably lost to the same abyss as socks and guitar picks)
    or was it an exercise?
