Fixing up the perspective, as well as the pastel-ness:



In this case, I actually took a few screen caps from a Star Destroyer from Star Wars Episode V and threw 'em together. You can still see a good chunk of it in the skyline, but I'll be fixing that up soon enough.

Damnedest thing, whenever I start with color, things tend to get pastel-colored.

What you're seeing is a lack of highlight and shadow. One thing you can do that might help is put down your base colors, then put down your brightest highlight and darkest shadow and work to make them fit without lightening/darkening them. The other thing that helps me is laying out a color palate beforehand (like in traditional painting) this way you can pick from colors you know have a range and avoid pulling colors from the canvas all the time (which is handy but will make things pastel-y if you do it too much). Keep at it and it'll come.
