    Magic Cards-Zendikar Set- Jason Felix

    Hey,

Been quietly lurking and enjoying all the postings. For the most part, all most everything that I have been working on might not see the light of day which explains my lack of posting. Sure that is the drill for most here as well.

Anywho, guess we can finally post some of the artwork from the Zendikar set. This was my first time doing work for Wizards and had a great experience.

Nice, the last one is my favorite. I can't believe that all that detail is going on such tiny cards!

i really like them, great works, but i think that the third is a little plane, the rest is just great ;D
also i really admire the magic artist, when i was young i didn't wanted to be a firemen or astronaut, i wanted to be a magic artist xDD (and still wanting)

TomatoFish---> Thanks dood. After seeing how many great artists have worked for Wizards and the quality of artwork produced... I knew that I had to paint these as tight as possible even if they will only be printed fairly small.

Josu---> The third piece is fairly plain, not the most exciting and background detailed. But I was making sure the image could read from a distance.. which it does. It was a tricky trade off.

TRIPLE-R---> Awesome man, glad you got that 'motion' feel to it. Its something that I am always trying to add without it looking like a cheap filtered trick.

Andy Brase---> Nice to hear from you! Sweet dood, cool that you saw my work somewhere. BTW, way to rock it with all the solid work you've been doing.

Betatronic---> That's really nice of you to say. As you can tell, the Magic look is evolving and happy that its a good evolution and accepted rather than the latter. It's been great working on these cards, always a challenge considering all the amazing artists they hire.

Dahami---> Thanks man, I'm always trying my best.

    Quite nice work, mate!
Good lighting and a render style that is loose and tight on the right balance.

John Bridges---> Aye man, great to hear from you. Ironically enough, when I was commissioned to create this image... I started to have White Wolf flash backs. It was a surreal moment to paint up some vampires once again in a different context.

schaal---> I am very intrigued by that balance of loose and tight. Thanks for saying that. Ever since I have returned to oil painting, its been this obsessive need to dither down essential forms to the least amount of strokes & the play of edges.

Dood, el coro.... yer the king of edge control! Can I give you a hug the next time I see you? Miss hanging out and painting with yeah.

Hey Jason, thanks for that. Taking classes with Carl really opened my eyes and turned on a different switch. Just wish I could have finished my training with him... so much to learn. Seems the more I know, the more doors that open up to keep me humble.

Beautiful work, sir! The backgrounds suck in the characters. Love it.

Solid works, very interesting imagery here. As for critiques, I'd say try to find a more well balanced mid-tone for your paintings, and go easier with the textures as well. Keep it going!

Heyah! A lot of great work is flowing around, appreciate the replies.

DARYL--> Really dig the work you create man. Glad some of the cards stand out!

gelfling---> Environments is probably my weak link at the moment and spending more time now hammering away on that than anything else these days. Nothing like seeing a problem and finallly knowing how to correct the problem areas.

Tmza---> I've always admired the quality of artwork that Magic puts out. It took me over 7 years before I actually got hired to create some work for them. In the past, my style and approach was tooo digital. Now its more of an acceptable media, plus that digital is able to look more traditional too. To get work, all you need to do is go to their website and send your stuff in. They are always looking for great new artists.

El Jeremie---> That was the first card that I created for them... learned a lot from it and glad the work is still cool to view.

cgaddict---> Aye man, thanks. I do agree the mid-tones have dropped off quiet a bit. Its strange because I work on multiple monitors and sometimes on one monitor it looks great and on the other... not so great. Finally figured out problem and definitely paying more attention to the overall values.

MattGamer---> Mucho thanks man! Glad the balance of background and the characters equal out. Its an odd balance to nail these cards and still have them read well when reduced. Once in awhile, Magic posts some of the high resolution pieces up on their site. Its great to actually see all the resolution and details everyone is painting. Jamie Jones has a few wallpaper images up and man... a great use of edge control and minimal strokes. Brilliant work.
