    impressive

First of all is everyone just freakin perfect. It takes me awhile to finish a real sketch...so I am only posting sketches that I do in about 30 secs to 10 mins.

Heres what I like about your work, confidence, clarity, story, movement, creative push, expressive qualities and really good use of space.

Dumb question alert...what are you using to render your work?

I am just at the edge of the abyss...

Really nice sigs, it's awesome to see all the design work. Very different from everything on the site. Sigs are so damn hard to make in my opinion and so is most design work so probs on you for doing that.

I really like the pencil, charcoal then painted drawings that you're doing. They look great, and it's especially nice to see you playing with the ideas. If you keep doing those you'll improve a lot. It would be super cool if some day you could make a sig out of one of your own paintings

Btw, whats SOTW? I know it's something of the week, signature of the week?

Take care and keep on rocking

First up, thank you all for the kind words, it really encourages me.

sombertwin: Do you mean rendering in the traditional sense, as in shading, or in the more modern sense, like in Photoshop? I don't tend to use renders for photoshop work, I either just make the rest of the stock into the final result, or I use ready-rendered stock.

lilnebo: SOTW is Signature Of The Week, yes. A few months back I was really into the whole Concept Artist appeal, with the Illustration sort of approach, but I was too impatient, and got frequently stressed and annoyed, so I've gone back to focusing on photomanipulation, which seems to come naturally. I like having a different style and way of working, that's what art is all about.

    "Nubula"

First full sized photomanipulation in a long time, hopefully the first of many. Started with the girl on a blank canvas.

I'm sorry I've not been on guys, been very very busy lately.

Update of only a couple of sigs I did a while back.

Much more to come soon, including hopefully the final version of the Teen Challenge badge.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys.

What I don't understand is how everyone who comments seems to like my sketchbook, and yet the star rating is getting lower and lower.

I presume this means that those of you who dislike it merely give it a miniscule rating and then move on. This is not useful to me in any way whatsoever.

Please, if you spot something wrong, or something you don't like, then post a comment saying so. ALL criticisms are welcome.

    Thanks.

Some new stuff, including a .gif animation to show you my progress for the archangel signature. As you can see I add some C4d armour to him to make him more interesting.

You have some really great designs in here Droid. I'm looking forward to seeing that acrylic piece worked out. It has a good start. I haven't see a lot of photo manipulation so while I think yours looks amazing I can't really crit on it because of my lack of knowledge in that area. I would love to see more traditional work. Keep it coming

    Thanks Ninjac.

More traditional stuff will be on the way, I've just got some new sketchbooks yesterday, top quality ones for really cheap, I got two A4 ones at £2.99 each, and one A3 one at £4.99. Made by Winsor & Newton.

I'm really looking forward to filling these up with studies and doodles and whatever else I want, but first I want to customise the boring black cover. Here's a photoshopped pic of a vector by Hydro74 on the cover which I think works well:

Just need to see if the acrylic paints will stick to the surface, and if not, whether I can make a sticker for it instead.

    Will update with results soon.

UPDATE: Tried with acrylics, and even though they stick, the colour is dead because of the canvas being so dark. Will get a full size sticker sheet soon, and use a stanley knife to cut the individual components, and then stick that down.

Will post an update when I get the sticker sheets, until then, the inside of the sketchbook is gonna have to do.

Had this concept a while ago, finally got round to doing it. =]

Stuck the Nike logo on at the end to see what it'd look like as a poster/advert, and looks pretty sick.

DISCLAIMER: This was not comissioned, paid for, or in any way made by Nike, it is purely a mock-up poster by the artist.

Slogan is my own, following the philosophy that we are judged and therefore help captive by everything, including faces.

Did another version with "Droid" above the slogan, but I think it looks better without. Took a few hours to do, maybe 2 and a half, maybe more.

    Comments appreciated.

truly fantastic work here! wow. i loved the image in post 76! did you ever try to see what it'd look like if instead of a smooth face - you could have it be a splash of the flesh matching milky looking effects on his face? similar to the jacket but with more energy. the blur with the smokey type effect is cool, its not bad at all - i just thought the image may look even more wicked with that added to it. either way - your stuff is bad ass

Thanks. Yeah, I gave it a go with the splash on the face too, but it didn't work with the flow no matter which way I put it, so in the end I just warped it a bit round the head so it's not completely plain, but not too distracting from the focal.

Here's a video I did this week, just doing a quick walkthrough of this signature.

Plus a .gif animation, good practice making the text work well with the movement.

And some practice of making people disappear, making this guy's head invisible.

Last but not least, a photoshop quickie of making a photo of Edinburgh Castle look like a tiny scale model.

Also did a logo design and a t-shirt design, but I'm not allowed to post them until they say so. =/

O.o wow that is so cool! Really effective! Interesting SB you have here Droid - at first I was put off by the huge amount of 'sigs' as I wasn't sure how much work you were putting in ... but! on further looking through I came to see you have some serious skills with natural mediums and your photoshop work is more than just finding a nice looking pic and chucking some random effects on it - interesting seeing the detailed process pics.

As far as ratings going down I experience the same and sometimes right after I post some of what I view as my better work? go figure! Don't sweat it but you may want to include a piece or two of your inked natural art in your first post too - gives people a quick indication of your skill range

    Keep rockin dude!

Thanks for the kind feedback guys.

Yeah I should probably put more stuff in the first post instead of the first page being overwhelmingly full of not-very-good signatures. Thanks for the tip.

I might do a tutorial on the model making in photoshop, it's pretty straight forward.

Another thing I did today, first entry for SOTW (Signature Of The Week) in aaaaages, I got irritated at clients always being picky, and so decided to do something where I'm in charge, I decide when it's finished, and I do what I want.

    Theme was black and white.

And it reflects my anger at clients purely unintentionally.

Updated first post with my more recent stuff before realising that some of them I haven't actually posted yet. Durrrrrr, numpty.

    So here:

First is a quick freehand study of a vector-ish type illustration by Tomasz Miazga, the simplicity of it combined with the awesome pose made me really love it.

And the attachment is a sketch of an idea I had for a stencil, "Beauty is Mortal". The squares on the arm are inspired by the work of Grief.

More shizzlez to come soon, I'm a bit all over the place at the moment though, I'll be moving up to my Uni accomodation on saturday, so busy with other things obviously.

Leaving the proverbial nest at last eh?

Update of more traditional work, plus the occasional digital.

Study of one of Randis' characters, loved the awesome texture of the face.

"Blueblood", self portrait I threw together for my advanced higher folio. Don't really like it, but hey, got a B overall, so it must not have brought down the rest by tooo much.

Ink study of one of Byroglyphic's portraits, done freehand and quickly, to try help loosen up more.

Unfinished photo of "Rage", another selfportrait for the mentioned folio. Quite like it, but only had time for colour wash background.

And a design for Mimobot's competition, thought a Royal Guard would look pretty cool. Someone then copied this idea, but neither of us won first prize anyway, so meh.

EDIT: Yet more from my elusive sketchbook, believe it or not. Started a new one in the holidays, since my old one got sent to the SQA, and my art teacher is now busy showing to all the students in the course now. =/

First page, trying out some different styles of character design.

Pretty much the same next, note the Da Vinci embryo study at bottom.

Quick sketch under the theme "Curiosity".

Doodles on the "Principles of animation", I find the storyboard, kind of "camera" work more interesting if you know what I mean. Choosing what shots to do, where to move the "camera" etc.

    RIBBIT

Next flickbook will be a jumping frog, throwing out some quick ideas of character.

Theme for this week was "Fall", which I associate with jumping, flying, parachuting, etc.

Really enjoyed working the rendering up, especially the trousers. Here's a cinematic close up shot, in awes-inspiring, LOW DEFINITION!

And another little sketchbook I had started, has great paper quality, moleskine I believe you guys would call it. Need to show you the cover actually, has awesome squares that looks kinda azteck-ish:

Look at the pretty faces. Just look at them. Studies of a couple of Wes Burt's characters, especially loved the hobo guy.

Bummin' around, see what I did there? I did a FUNNY. ^.^ Yeah, loved the contrast between the hair and the skin, the wrinkles and the smooth ( ) and the different materials. Must go draw more hobos at some point.

First up, I have a brand spanking new blog, this one devoted purely to art, which will be updated daily with digital and traditional art, sketches, and inspiration.

See it here, and please follow: Ideas Are Bulletproof

Second of all, I've recently bought the book featured on the top of the site, Digital Painting Techniques | Volume 2, and I'm going to be trying the tutorials featured in that, so expect new kinds of work, including character, creature, environment, and vehicle design.

And lastly, I've recently re-discovered the delights of Alchemy, a free program you can download for free from here: Alchemy | Download.

It allows you to make awesome abstract shapes and has all different settings, including one that lets you do it through the microphone, so whistle and you have a shape.

Here's some of my stuff for it, plus a signature I forgot to add.

    A cow's head. Purty.

A pair of sci-fi robot/mecha type arms, which I plan to make use of later.

    A girl in a kimono.

And finally a samurai warrior. All turned out really quite well considering the lack of control you have over what the brush is doing. I might take the samurai into photoshop at some point, and do a full painting out of it.

    And the simple signature:

Messed around again, and made this, which is (hopefully) recognisable as a face.

Duuuuude, Alchemy is so easy to do silhouettes in. Really digging the style of some of other people's work I've seen in it too, one guy doing awesome comic book inks in it, just freestyling it out.
