Hey man, thanks for stopping by my thread. Your sketchbook is looking good! I'm in the same need-to-study-values boat as you, and it's nice to see you also like doing portraits.

Looking at your first drawings and paintings I'd recomend you use less black in your paintings. Nothing is ever black (this was talked on the portfolio review week, lots of folks got the 'too much black' critique). The portrait on the #22 post is awesome! Keep doing that.

Also, how was the schoolism course?

Keep up with those studies, man!
    André.

Spaggen: thanks dewd I try to keep myself busy.
cl0aked: Thanks bro, yeah I heard that too and I've tried to remembered it when I do stuff now. Schoolism was cool, I learned alot of nice stuff in PSP by Bobby, I would recommend it.
    007-r0b3r7: Thank you sir!

I ran into a problem yesterday, the tip of my wacom pen has been worn down to a stump so I had to go get a new one so I didn't do much yesturday. But now I'm back on track. I started this master study of "David with the Head of Goliath" by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. This is my first master study but It did not come out quite as I wanted, many more to come!

Wow! There is so much improvement since your first post. Great job! I'm kind of jealous of the determination you have/show.

Thank you Vuurdraakje I just realized what I wanna do and I'm going for it I suppose.

I was thinking that I need to start on some sort of portfolio to perhaps get some freelance work.

Nice works man! On the last portrait I'd recommend you use larger brushes when painting areas like her cheek and forehead. Otherwise it's a fine piece, really liked the colors you picked.

    Hey man, much improvements!
One thing; smooth shading and that heavy linework does not go well together. I'd suggest cell shading for such stuff. Since the lines are very graphic.

I love the life studies their awesome!! Way to go buddy, do more heads portraits and anatomy studies, you still need to get those proportions right when you draw from head, just a matter of time.
Work on your blending a bit more too try using a spackled brush for smoother blending and even soft brush at times.
    Keep up the fight!

Danny_K: Thank you very much! I just use a oval brush with some angle for my shading but I need to try out some new ones. cheers!

Studies from this morning, the muscle one has alot of errors I would think. The legs are really wierd and hard to do

Undeadartist Thanks bro, I think you have made more than you think when you say I do spoons easy, if by easy you mean I spend 50% of the whole time painting on just the spoon to make it not look like ass, then I guess I do Thanks!

Undeadartist I've only gotten one from deviantart, I just wrote on my presentation there that I'm open for commissions. I don't have many visitors to my DA page but one day some dude mailed me and wanted one, just dumb luck I suppose. Earned a whooping $20 for a cleaned pencil sketch
When I'm not doing studies nowadays I'm working on my portfolio so I can post that I'm looking for work here on CA and on GA, CGTalk etc. Maybe I'll be able to get some small stuff.

agelaos: Thanks alot bro! You the man!

    Morning stuff:

Trying to get this skin thing, my rendering needs much work.
Started messing around with my personal piece, I tried this black and white -> color thing but I have no idea how to do it. It always comes out so messy and it makes me wanna kill myself. Nothing on this piece is working.

Hey Alex, nice work you're definitely improving! I'm loving the linework on your latest sketch, the colouring's not quite as good, this is really to do with the landmarks of the underlying form/skull/muscles - I would definitely recommend hitting the Loomis head book, and doing it fully, every page+memory stuff. Also Glenn Vilppu's Head dvds are really excellent and insightful. Imo without this construction knowledge, painting heads from memory is just going to be one big frustration. Ryder study is looking great.

    GL bro!
