lol this took me 20 minutes. Efficiency fail.
Hey, welcome to CA. Feels good to take the plunge, eh?
One thing I notice in your face study there, is that while your proportions are pretty much correct except for a couple of small things, is it feels kind of flat. If you pay attention to the planes of the face, you'll fix that pretty quick. You can reference for the planes of the face (and lots of other useful things!) here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/501782/And...Head-and-Hands
And the proportion problems I mentioned before are that the eyes are a bit too small, and the brows are a bit too high.
But it's a good start! Keep at it!![]()
recently got a new desktop! DIY but it still hangs. Yet to figure out the problem. Well heres the virgin paint on the new pc!
heheh.
Heres another one
back to basics![]()
haaaa
just gotta keep practicing.
Hey dude, im a wee beginner too so i have no valuable advice for you
But I can say that i really like your gangsters and the charachters above that, nice work
head study before heading out. pun intended lol.

Hey man thanks for dropping byWe just got to be motivated enough to make it!

really iffy, but I gotta keep pushing.
the last post was a great improvement on the previous figures you posted, so much more movement and character- much more interesting to look at. What kind of ref did you use, if any?
As for your portrait drawings, try drawing a variety of views, e.g. side, back, low angle, high angle etc. you may get more of a sense of the masses of the head and features that way and things will look a little less flat.
Keep posting![]()
One before i head out today. From imagination. I really gotta start watching out for my values. Really whacked and looks too airbrushed.

Thanks for the words of encouragementAnyway it was referenced. Found this site from the Academy of Glazunov. Amazing work!

still so much more to learnnnn
My values are terrible. Lol.
Hey there, your studies are looking very good indeed!
Your lines seem a little shaky at some of your drawings, maybe it's the tablet? (because it's less apparent in the pencil sketches from Loomis you've done)
Keep the good job up and the good steady updates![]()
The proportions and structure in the last one are a little wonky - be sure to keep working from your anatomy books to improve in that area. Great value and rendering can't make up for faulty structure. And as you improve your understanding of the planes that make up the surface of the face, that will also help your understanding of how light interacts with those planes. If you get a chance, you might want to check out Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing Design and Invention; that's a great book about deconstructing the figure into simple 3-dimensional shapes and planes. Also, try doing some self-portraits. The great thing about studying your own face is you can do a series of studies where you light yourself from different angles and see how the light interacts with the various planes under different conditions.

Another one for tonight. I tried doing this one by building up the structure underneath the face first, and then paint on top of it. Had to edit the form a lot just to get it to look decent. Ahh no way but up when you're at rock bottom!
Kerah-Thanks for stopping byAnd it's not the tablet, i think its just my bad habits haha!
dierat I really appreciate the critYeah I understand what you mean when you say value and rendering can't make up for a faulty structure. I looked up the book you suggested and got myself a copy. You're right man, I really gotta work on making my figures look 3d haha.
Tried putting in some colours. I noticed after I did my head studies how wrong the first two ones were haha. Keep on churning out new ones!
So here are some late night head practices. Looks super weird when i start tilting it in any direction, but i think im getting a better idea about what people mean when they say draw in '3D'.
female body. arghh.
Your studies have good pose and anatomy, I would say for now to work more on your studies to really get the anatomy into your head although I do like your character design sheets. Also force yourself to use less soft brush, it'll make things more solid. Soft brush can be a devil until you can really create your form
head practice.
TFsean- Thanks for the tip about the soft brush. But yeah you're right. I gotta be watching my values a lot more!
two photo refs. gonna study more!
keep practicing those head and figure studies, it will come, it's good to see you tackling different angles
Hunin- Thanks for the encouragementWill keep practicing!
Figures were from posemaniacs. I managed to get a copy of that Michael Hampton book on figure drawing. Really helped in seeing the forms beneath the figure. Drawing in 3D. That guy breaks it down so easily. Even that it's pretty hard to digest haha. Will keep working on it!
