Hello all!

I've been lurking around these parts a few years now, and though I had started a sketchbook thread a long, long time ago, I wanted a fresh start. I hope that's okay!

Edited Introduction:
My name's Maya. I go to an art school with a very classical, traditional, fine arts approach. I hope the conceptart.org can help me expand this education with a broader range of ideas and perspectives. And of course stress relief.

I'm interested in comics, illustration, concept art, animation, you name it. I'll like to be an illustrator some day, maybe.. hopefully...?

Let's have some hand/composition studies to start things off.

Still life paintings. Done with either tempera or acrylic. The wine bottle one took me only 4 hours, I'm very proud of it.

I also like your hand studies, even tho something weird goes with/after wrist, looks like if the arm was too thin and the hand too big, maybe its an effect of the perspective hum I dont know

anyway, hope to see more, btw I never managed to paint anything decent with tempera, I find it to be a difficult technique which is weird since I do more or less fine with acrylic, do you actually spot a big difference between the two? besides acrylic is I suppose more water based / water friendly

@f1x: I know what you mean about the wrist/arm structure, I'm aware it tends to be a bit "off" in those drawings. They weren't so much anatomy studies as composition studies, but it's something I should keep in mind regardless. Thanks for pointing it out!

As for acrylic vs. tempera, I find that tempera tends to be a bit chalky, especially if you don't mix it with egg yolk and use it straight from the tube. Acrylic dries faster and once it dries, you can't "wash it off" by going over it with water, like you can sometimes with tempera. However, I've found that tempera colors will more readily mix, like in that last still life painting. Both are water-based media. I'm no expert, though. I've only been painting like this for less than a year.

And I draw people, too! These were more experimenting with different techniques than anything. The last three are self portraits, more or less.

The still life paintings look very nice. I think drawing your own hand is actually a really useful exercise so keep at this too! Drawing people from photos is good for practice but definitely try going to a life drawing class too if you can, it will really help with drawing people from the imagination.

@Lightpunk: Thanks! Yeah, life drawing classes are the absolute best. When school starts, I'll have figure drawing almost daily, so I took a break from it till then.

It really is just a lot of practice and understanding. From your sketchbook, I can see you're on a good track, just continue working on visualizing faces, how they work, what part goes out in space, what part goes in, etc. Life drawing classes helped me a lot to see that, because when you have a live model in front of you, you can walk around him or her, see features from various angles, etc. It's also a bit of a pain if they keep falling asleep!

I'll try to update more often. I've found that if I go more than two days without practicing in some way, it's hard to start back up again. Today I started figure study class, working on a really large format, but I did some sketches first. And some doodles from imagination, trying to work out a concept for a t-shirt design.

I did some more sketches for figure drawing. We're working on a large format figure study, I'd say about 3m x 2m, so the model is holding the same pose everyday. All feedback and critique is appreciated!

I've been having a long string of illnesses (that seems to have passed now, thankfully!); I apologize for the hiatus! here are some pencil drawings I doodled up while sick in bed. All critique appreciated!

I don't think I've had a less productive school year in the entire history of my education. Well, no whining, just drawing. Some portraits I've been working on to get back into the swing of things. I'm trying to work in more color into my digital art, but I know I also need to work on the actual precision of the drawing. The first two are from imagination, the last two from photograph references. All feedback appreciated, as always.

@Noomwolf No problem! Anything I can do to help out a fellow artist. I would also recommend you try oil pastels or chalk pastels. For me at least they're an easy way of forcing yourself to see color in the subjects you're drawing and really bringing them to life without getting hung up on some of the more delicate aspects of painting. I think they're a good transition step between drawing with a pencil and painting with a brush.

Here's another screen cap digital study I did yesterday/this morning. I'm really trying to get faster at these, but in the beginning stages they kind of look terrible.. it takes me a while to fix them up. :/

I think you jinxed me, Noomwolf! The moment you noticed my constant posting, I went two days without posting anything! (actually, I didn't even draw D: ) To make up for it, I did an hour class session in Pixel Lovely's Figure Drawing Tool. The time intervals were 30s, 60s, 5m45s and 11m and 30m on the last two figures. I don't know, I feel like I wasted those last 30 minutes doing nothing special... :/ OH WELL NEXT TIME
